1 I stalo se, když uslyšel Sanballat, že stavíme zed, rozpálil se hněvem, a rozzlobiv se velmi, posmíval se Židům. 2 Nebo mluvil před bratřími svými a před vojskem Samařským, řka: Co ti bídní Židé berou před sebe? Tak-liž mají býti zanecháni? Což budou obětovati? Za jeden-liž den to dodělati mají? Také-liž i kamení z hromad rumu křísiti budou, kteréž spáleno jest? 3 Tobiáš pak Ammonitský podlé něho řekl: Nechať stavějí, však liška přiběhna, prorazí zed jejich kamennou. 4 Slyš, ó Bože náš, že jsme v pohrdání, a obrať pohanění jejich na hlavu jejich, a dej je v loupež v zemi, do níž by zajati byli. 5 A nepřikrývej nepravosti jejich, a hřích jejich od tváři tvé ať není shlazen, proto že jsou tě popouzeli v stavitelích. 6 A tak stavěli jsme tu zed, a spojili všecku až do polu, a měl lid srdce k tomu dílu. 7 Což když uslyšel Sanballat, a Tobiáš a Arabští, Ammonitští i Azotští, že by na dýl přibývalo zdi Jeruzalémské, a že se již byly počaly mezery zavírati, rozpálili se hněvem velice. 8 Protož spuntovali se všickni společně, aby táhli k boji proti Jeruzalému a aby jemu překážku učinili. 9 (My pak modlili jsem se Bohu svému, a postavili jsme stráž proti nim ve dne i v noci, bojíce se jich. 10 Nebo řekli Judští: Zemdlelať jest síla nosičů, a rumu ještě mnoho jest, neodolaliť bychom jim, stavějíce zed.) 11 Anobrž i řekli nepřátelé naši: Nezvědíť, ani spatří, až vpadneme mezi ně, a pomordujeme je, aneb zastavíme to dílo. 12 Když pak přišli Židé, kteříž s nimi bydlili, a pravili nám na desetkrát: Mějte pozor na všecka místa, kudyž se chodí k nám: 13 Tedy postavil jsem na dolních místech za zdí, i na místech příkrých, a osadil jsem lidem po čeledech s meči, s kopími a lučišti jejich. 14 A když jsem to spatřil, vstana, řekl jsem k přednějším a knížatům i k jinému lidu: Nebojte se jich, ale na Pána velikého a hrozného pamatujte, a bojujte za bratří své, za syny své a dcery své, za manželky své a domy své. 15 I stalo se, když uslyšeli nepřátelé naši, že jest nám to oznámeno, tožť Bůh rozptýlil radu jejich, a my navrátili jsme se všickni ke zdem, každý k dílu svému. 16 Ale však od toho dne polovice služebníků mých dělali, a polovice jich držela kopí, pavézy a lučiště, a pancíře, a knížata stála za vší čeledí Judskou. 17 Ti také, kteříž dělali na zdi, i nosiči břemen, i nakladači, každý jednou rukou dělal, a v druhé držel braň. 18 Z těch pak, kteříž stavěli, měl jeden každý meč svůj připásaný na bedrách svých, a tak stavěli, a trubač stál podlé mne. 19 Nebo jsem řekl k přednějším a knížatům i k jinému lidu: Dílo veliké a široké jest, a my porůznu jsme na zdi, podál jeden od druhého. 20 Na kterém byste koli místě uslyšeli hlas trouby, tu se shromažďte k nám. Bůh náš bude bojovati za nás. 21 A tak my dělali jsme dílo, a polovice jich držela kopí od svitání až do soumraku. 22 Tehdáž také řekl jsem lidu: Každý s služebníkem svým nocuj u prostřed Jeruzaléma, ať je máme k stráži v noci, a ve dne k dílu. 23 Pročež i já, i bratří moji, i služebníci moji, i strážní, kteříž chodí za mnou, nebudeme svláčeti oděvu svého. Žádný ho nesloží, leč u vody.

1 Jakmile uslyšeli Sanbalat a Tóbijáš, Arabové, Amónci a Ašdóďané, že obnova jeruzalémských hradeb pokračuje, že se trhliny opět uzavírají, velmi vzplanuli. 2 Vzájemně se smluvili, že vytáhnou proti Jeruzalému do boje a že v něm vyvolají zmatek. 3 Modlili jsme se ke svému Bohu a stavěli proti nim na obranu stráže ve dne v noci. 4 Juda říkal: „Síla nosičů je podlomena, všude jsou hromady sutin, nejsme schopni hradby dostavět.“ 5 Naši protivníci říkali: „Nic nepoznají a nic nepostřehnou, dokud mezi ně nevtrhneme. Pobijeme je a to dílo překazíme.“ 6 Avšak Judejci, kteří sídlili v jejich blízkosti, přicházeli a varovali nás znovu a znovu: „Ze všech míst, kam se obrátíte, jdou proti nám!“ 7 Proto jsem postavil stráž pod svatým místem při hradbách na nechráněných úsecích. Postavil jsem tam lid podle čeledí s meči, kopími a luky. 8 Když jsem všechno přehlédl, šel jsem a řekl šlechticům, představenstvu a ostatnímu lidu: „Nebojte se jich, pamatujte na Panovníka velikého a budícího bázeň! Bojujte za své bratry, syny a dcery, ženy a domy!“ 9 Jakmile naši nepřátelé uslyšeli, že je nám vše známo, pochopili, že Bůh překazil jejich záměr. My všichni jsme se vrátili na hradby, každý ke svému dílu. 10 Avšak od onoho dne pracovala na díle jen polovina mých lidí, zatímco druhá polovina byla ozbrojena kopími, štíty, luky a pancíři. Velmožové stáli při celém domě judském. 11 Ti, kdo stavěli hradby, nosiči břemen i nakladači, pracovali jednou rukou na díle a v druhé drželi zbraň. 12 Všichni, kdo stavěli, měli meč připásaný na bedrech a tak stavěli, a vedle mne stál trubač. 13 Řekl jsem šlechticům, představenstvu a ostatnímu lidu: „Dílo je veliké a rozsáhlé a my jsme rozděleni po hradbách daleko od sebe. 14 Uslyšíte-li z některého místa zvuk polnice, shromážděte se tam k nám. Náš Bůh bude bojovat za nás.“ 15 A pokračovali jsme v díle; polovina mužů držela kopí od svítání až do soumraku. 16 V té době jsem také řekl lidu: „Každý se svým služebníkem nocujte uprostřed Jeruzaléma; v noci nás budou střežit, ve dne pracovat.“ 17 Nikdo z nás si nesvlékal šat, ani já ani moji bratři ani moji lidé ani strážní, které jsem měli při sobě...

Pobijeme je a dílo se zastaví.“ 6 Kdykoli přicházeli Židé bydlící v jejich sousedství, desetkrát nám vykládali: „Kam se obrátíte, odevšad jdou na vás.“ 7 Proto jsem dole za hradbami a na otevřená místa rozestavil lid podle jejich rodů s meči, kopími a luky. 8 Po obhlídce jsem knížatům, hodnostářům a ostatním z lidu řekl: „Nebojte se jich! Pamatujte na Pána velikého a hrozného. Bojujte za své bratry, syny a dcery, za své ženy a své domy!“ 9 Když se naši nepřátelé dozvěděli, že o jejich plánech víme a že je Bůh zmařil, mohli jsme se všichni vrátit ke hradbám, každý ke svému dílu. 10 Od toho dne polovina mých mužů pracovala na díle a druhá polovina byla ve zbroji. Velitelé s kopími, štíty, luky a pancíři střežili celý rod Judův, 11 který stavěl hradby. Bůh bude bojovat za nás!“ 15 Pracovali jsme tedy na díle a polovina třímala kopí od svítání, až dokud nevyšly hvězdy. 16 Tehdy jsem řekl lidu: „Všichni ať přespávají se svými mládenci v Jeruzalémě, aby mohli v noci hlídat a ve dne pracovat.“ 17 Já ani mí bratři a mládenci a strážní, kteří mě provázeli, jsme se nesvlékali a neodkládali zbraň ani u vody.

1 ^[1] Now when Sanballat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry and greatly enraged, and he jeered at the Jews. Will they restore it for themselves?^[2] Will they sacrifice? Will they finish up in a day? Will they revive the stones out of the heaps of rubbish, and burned ones at that?” (1Kr 16,24) 3 Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, “Yes, what they are building—if a fox goes up on it he will break down their stone wall!” (Neh 4,1; Pl 5,18) 4 Hear, O our God, for we are despised. The Work Resumes

15 When our enemies heard that it was known to us and that God had frustrated their plan, we all returned to the wall, each to his work. (Jb 5,12) 16 From that day on, half of my servants worked on construction, and half held the spears, shields, bows, and coats of mail. And the leaders stood behind the whole house of Judah, (2Pa 26,14) 17 who were building on the wall. Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other. 18 And each of the builders had his sword strapped at his side while he built. The man who sounded the trumpet was beside me. 19 And I said to the nobles and to the officials and to the rest of the people, “The work is great and widely spread, and we are separated on the wall, far from one another. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me. 19 And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another. 20 In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us. 21 So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared. 22 Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day. 23 So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.
