1Slyšel pak Sefatiáš syn Matanův, a Gedaliáš syn Paschurův, a Juchal syn Selemiášův, a Paschur syn Malkiášův slova, kteráž Jeremiáš mluvil ke všemu lidu, řka:2Takto praví Hospodin: Kdo by zůstal v městě tomto, zahyne mečem, hladem aneb morem, ale kdož by vyšel k Kaldejským, že bude živ, a že bude míti život svůj místo kořisti, a živ zůstane.3Takto praví Hospodin: Jistotně vydáno bude město toto v ruku vojska krále Babylonského, a vezme je.4Protož řekla ta knížata králi: Nechť jest usmrcen muž ten, poněvadž zemdlívá ruce mužů bojovných, pozůstalých v městě tomto, i ruce všeho lidu, mluvě jim slova taková; nebo muž ten nikoli neobmýšlí pokoje lidu tomuto, ale zlé.5Tedy řekl král Sedechiáš: Aj, v ruce vaší jest, neboť král zhola nic nemůže proti vám.6I vzali Jeremiáše, kterýž byl v síni stráže, a uvrhli jej do jámy Malkiášovy, syna králova, a spustili Jeremiáše po provazích. V té pak jámě nebylo nic vody, ale bláto, tak že Jeremiáš tonul v tom blátě.7Ale jakž uslyšel Ebedmelech Mouřenín, dvořan, kterýž byl v domě královském, že dali Jeremiáše do té jámy, (král pak seděl v bráně Beniaminské),8Hned vyšel Ebedmelech z domu královského, a mluvil s králem, řka:9Pane můj, králi, zle učinili muži tito všecko, což učinili Jeremiášovi proroku, že jej uvrhli do té jámy; neboť by byl umřel i na prvním místě hladem, poněvadž již není žádného chleba v městě.10Protož poručil král Ebedmelechovi Mouřenínu, řka: Vezmi s sebou odsud třidceti mužů, a vytáhni Jeremiáše proroka z té jámy, prvé než by umřel.11Tedy vzal Ebedmelech ty muže s sebou, a všel do domu královského pod pokladnici, a nabral starých hadrů strhaných, hadrů, pravím, zkažených, kteréž spustil k Jeremiášovi do té jámy po provazích.12A řekl Ebedmelech Mouřenín Jeremiášovi: Nu, podlož ty staré, strhané hadry a zkažené pod paže rukou svých s provazy. I učinil tak Jeremiáš.13Takž vytáhli Jeremiáše po provazích, a dobyli jej z té jámy. I seděl Jeremiáš v síni stráže.14Potom poslav král Sedechiáš, vzal Jeremiáše proroka k sobě do třetího průchodu, kterýž byl při domu Hospodinovu, a řekl král Jeremiášovi: Zeptám se tebe na něco, netaj přede mnou ničehož.15I řekl Jeremiáš Sedechiášovi: Oznámím-liť, zdaliž mne konečně neusmrtíš? A poradím-liť, neuposlechneš mne.16Tedy přisáhl král Sedechiáš Jeremiášovi tajně, řka: Živť jest Hospodin, kterýž učinil nám život tento, že tě neusmrtím, aniž tě vydám v ruku mužů těch, kteříž hledají bezživotí tvého.17I řekl Jeremiáš Sedechiášovi: Takto praví Hospodin Bůh zástupů, Bůh Izraelský: Jestliže dobrovolně vyjdeš k knížatům krále Babylonského, i duše tvá živa bude, i město toto nebude vypáleno ohněm, a tak živ zůstaneš ty i dům tvůj.18Jestliže pak nevyjdeš k knížatům krále Babylonského, jistě že vydáno bude město toto v ruku Kaldejských, a vypálí je ohněm, ano i ty neznikneš ruky jejich.19Tedy řekl král Sedechiáš Jeremiášovi: Velmi se bojím Židů, kteříž ustoupili k Kaldejským, aby mne snad nevydali v ruku jejich, i učinili by sobě ze mne posměch.20Ale Jeremiáš řekl: Nevydadí. Uposlechni, prosím, hlasu Hospodinova, o kterémž já mluvím tobě, a bude dobře tobě, i duše tvá živa bude.21Jestliže pak nebudeš chtíti vyjíti, toto jest slovo to, kteréž mi ukázal Hospodin,22Že aj, všecky ženy, kteréž pozůstaly v domě krále Judského, přivedeny budou knížatům krále Babylonského, a samyť říkati budou: Nabádaliť jsou tě, a obdrželi na tobě ti, kteříž tě troštovali pokojem; uvázlyť v bahně nohy tvé, a nazpět obráceny.23Všecky také manželky tvé i syny tvé dovedou k Kaldejským, i ty sám neznikneš ruky jejich, ale rukou krále Babylonského jat budeš, a město toto vypálíš ohněm,24Tedy řekl Sedechiáš Jeremiášovi: Žádný ať neví o věcech těchto, abys neumřel.25Pakli uslyšíce knížata, že jsem mluvil s tebou, přišli by k tobě, a řekliť by: Oznam medle nám, cos mluvil s králem, netaj před námi, a neusmrtíme tě, a co mluvil s tebou král?26Tedy rci jim: Předkládal jsem poníženou a pokornou prosbu svou před krále, aby mne nedal zase voditi do domu Jonatanova, abych tam neumřel.27I sešla se všecka knížata k Jeremiášovi, aby se ho tázali. Kterýžto oznámil jim podlé toho všeho, jakž přikázal král. Takž mlčkem odešli od něho, když nebylo slyšeti o té věci.28Jeremiáš pak seděl v síni stráže až do toho dne, v němž dobyt jest Jeruzalém, kdežto byl, když dobýván byl Jeruzalém.
— Jeremjáš v cisterně; vysvobozen Ebedmelekem - Král vydal proroka předákům. Přímluva kúšijského dvořana Jeremjáše zachránila.
1 Šefatjáš, syn Matánův, Gedaljáš, syn Pašchúrův, Júkal, syn Šelemjášův, a Pašchúr, syn Malkijášův, slyšeli slova, která mluvil Jeremjáš ke všemu lidu: 2 „Toto praví Hospodin: Kdo zůstane v tomto městě, zemře mečem, hladem nebo morem, ale kdo vyjde ke Kaldejcům, zůstane naživu a jako kořist získá svůj život, zůstane živ. 3 Toto praví Hospodin: Toto město bude určitě vydáno do rukou vojska babylónského krále a ten je dobude.“4 Proto řekli velmožové králi: „Nechť je ten muž usmrcen, vždyť oslabuje ruce bojovníků, kteří v tomto městě zbývají, i ruce všeho lidu, když jim mluví podobná slova. Ten muž neusiluje o pokoj pro tento lid, nýbrž o zlo.“5 Král Sidkijáš odpověděl: „Hle, je ve vašich rukou, neboť král proti vám nic nezmůže.“6 Chopili se tedy Jeremjáše a vhodili ho do cisterny Malkijáše, syna královského, která byla na nádvoří stráží. Spustili tam Jeremjáše po provazech. V cisterně nebyla voda, jen bláto, takže se Jeremjáš topil v blátě. 7 Kúšijec Ebedmelek, dvořan, který byl v králově domě, uslyšel, že Jeremjáše dali do cisterny. Když král seděl v Benjamínské bráně,8 vyšel Ebedmelek z královského domu a promluvil ke králi:9 „Králi, můj pane, zle si počínali tito muži, že to všechno proroku Jeremjášovi provedli. Vhodili ho do cisterny, aby tam dole umřel hlady; ve městě už není žádný chléb.“10 Král Kúšijci Ebedmelekovi přikázal: „Vezmi s sebou odtud třicet mužů a vytáhni proroka Jeremjáše z cisterny, než tam zemře.“11 Ebedmelek vzal tedy s sebou muže, vešel do královského domu dolů do skladu, vzal odtud roztrhané hadry a rozedrané šaty a spustil je po provazech Jeremjášovi do cisterny.12 Kúšijec Ebedmelek řekl Jeremjášovi: „Podlož si ty roztrhané a rozedrané hadry do podpaží pod provazy.“ Jeremjáš to tak udělal.13 Pak táhli Jeremjáše na provazech a vytáhli ho z cisterny. Jeremjáš opět pobýval na nádvoří stráží.
— Poslední rozhovor se Sidkijášem - Bezmocný král hledá u proroka pomoc, ale nemá odvahu se podle jeho rady zařídit.
14 Král Sidkijáš si dal přivést proroka Jeremjáše k třetímu vchodu do Hospodinova domu. Král Jeremjášovi pravil: „Ptám se tě na Hospodinovo slovo. Nic přede mnou nezatajuj!“15 Jeremjáš Sidkijášovi odpověděl: „Když ti je oznámím, cožpak mě nevydáš na smrt? A když ti poradím, neposlechneš mě.“16 Král Sidkijáš Jeremjášovi tajně přisáhl: „Jakože živ je Hospodin, který nám dal tento život, nevydám tě na smrt ani do rukou těch mužů, kteří ti ukládají o život.“ 17 I řekl Jeremjáš Sidkijášovi: „Toto praví Hospodin, Bůh zástupů, Bůh Izraele: Jestliže vyjdeš k velmožům babylónského krále, zůstaneš sám naživu a toto město nebude vypáleno; zůstaneš naživu ty i tvůj dům.18 Jestliže však k velmožům babylónského krále nevyjdeš, bude toto město vydáno do rukou Kaldejců a ti je vypálí. Ani ty jim z rukou neunikneš.“ 19 Král Sidkijáš Jeremjášovi odvětil: „Obávám se Judejců, kteří přeběhli ke Kaldejcům, že mě Kaldejci vydají do jejich rukou a ti naloží se mnou podle své zvůle.“20 Jeremjáš odpověděl: „Nevydají. Uposlechni prosím Hospodina, jak ti ohlašuji, a povede se ti dobře a zůstaneš naživu.21 Jestliže se budeš zdráhat vyjít, nastane to, co mi Hospodin ukázal:22 Hle, všechny ženy, které zůstaly v domě judského krále, budou vyvedeny k velmožům babylónského krále a řeknou: ‚Podněcovali tě a přemohli tě mužové, kteří ti slibovali pokoj. Teď, když tvé nohy tonou v bahně, stáhli se zpět.‘ 23 Všechny tvé ženy a tvé syny vyvedou ke Kaldejcům. Ani ty jim z rukou neunikneš. Budeš chycen rukou babylónského krále a toto město bude vypáleno.“ 24 Sidkijáš pravil Jeremjášovi: „Ať se nikdo o těchto slovech nedoví, a nezemřeš.25 Jestliže velmožové uslyší, že jsem s tebou mluvil, a přijdou k tobě a řeknou ti: ‚Pověz nám, co jsi s králem mluvil, nic před námi nezatajuj a nevydáme tě na smrt. A co král mluvil s tebou?‘,26 řekneš jim: ‚Předložil jsem králi prosbu o smilování, aby mě nedával opět do domu Jónatanova, abych tam nezemřel.‘“ 27 I přišli k Jeremjášovi všichni velmožové a vyslýchali ho. On jim pověděl všechno tak, jak král přikázal. Mlčky od něho odešli a nikdo o té věci neuslyšel. 28 Jeremjáš pobýval na nádvoří stráží až do dne, kdy byl Jeruzalém dobyt. I stalo se při dobývání Jeruzaléma,

Kdo ale vyjde a vzdá se Babyloňanům, ten přežije a zachrání si život; takový zůstane naživu.3Tak praví Hospodin: Toto město jistě padne do rukou vojska babylonského krále, který je dobude.“4Tito velmoži pak řekli králi: „Ať ten muž zemře! Těmi svými řečmi jen bere odvahu bojovníkům, kteří ve městě ještě zbyli, i všemu lidu. Ten muž nehledá prospěch tohoto lidu, ale jeho zkázu!“5„Hle, je ve vašich rukou,“ odpověděl jim král Cidkiáš. „Král proti vám nic nezmůže.“6Vzali tedy Jeremiáše a hodili ho do jímky prince Malkiáše, která byla na strážním nádvoří; spustili tam Jeremiáše na provazech. V jímce nebyla voda, jen samé bahno, takže se Jeremiáš topil v bahně.7O tom, že Jeremiáše dali do jímky, se ale doslechl jeden z palácových dvořanů, Habešan Ebed-melech. Král právě zasedal v Benjamínské bráně.8Ebed-melech tedy vyšel z paláce a oslovil krále:9„Můj pane a králi! Ti muži se k proroku Jeremiášovi zachovali naprosto zločinně. Hodili ho do jímky, aby tam dole zemřel hlady; vždyť už ani ve městě není co jíst!“10Král na to Habešanu Ebed-melechovi přikázal: „Vezmi si odsud třicet mužů a vytáhni proroka Jeremiáše z jímky, než tam zemře.“11Ebed-melech tedy vzal ty muže s sebou. Ve sklepě královského paláce našel nějaké staré hadry a roztrhané šaty a spustil je na provazech Jeremiášovi do jímky.12„Podlož si ty staré roztrhané hadry pod provazy v podpaží,“ řekl Habešan Ebed-melech Jeremiášovi. Když to Jeremiáš udělal,13začali ho za ty provazy vytahovat, až ho z té jímky vytáhli. Tak se Jeremiáš vrátil zpět na strážní nádvoří.
Znovu před Cidkiášem
14Král Cidkiáš si pak nechal proroka Jeremiáše přivést ke třetímu vchodu do Hospodinova chrámu. „Chci od tebe slyšet slovo,“ řekl král Jeremiášovi. „Nic přede mnou netaj.“15„Copak bys mě nezabil, kdybych ti to řekl?“ odpověděl Jeremiáš Cidkiášovi. „I kdybych ti poradil, neposlechneš mě.“16Cidkiáš ale Jeremiášovi potají odpřisáhl: „Jakože je živ Hospodin, který nám dal život, nezabiji tě ani tě nevydám do rukou těch, kdo tě chtějí zabít.“17Nato Jeremiáš Cidkiášovi řekl: „Tak praví Hospodin, Bůh zástupů, Bůh Izraele: Pokud se dobrovolně vzdáš velitelům babylonského krále, zachráníš si život a toto město nebude vypáleno; tak přežiješ i s celou rodinou.18Pokud se však velitelům babylonského krále nevzdáš, pak město padne do rukou Babyloňanů. Ti je vypálí a jejich rukám neunikneš ani ty.“19Král Cidkiáš Jeremiášovi odpověděl: „Bojím se Židů, kteří přeběhli k Babyloňanům. Kdyby mě Babyloňané vydali do jejich rukou, vrhli by se na mě.“20„To neudělají,“ řekl Jeremiáš. „Jen poslechni Hospodina, jak ti říkám, a povede se ti dobře a přežiješ.21Pokud se ale vzdát odmítneš, stane se, co mi Hospodin ukázal:22Hle, všechny ženy, které zůstaly v paláci judského krále, budou vyvedeny k velitelům babylonského krále a hle, řeknou o tobě: ‚Podvedli a přemohli tě ti tví věrní přátelé. Když jsi teď uvázl v blátě, odvrátili se od tebe!‘23Všechny tvé ženy i tvé děti vyvedou k Babyloňanům a neunikneš jim ani ty. Padneš do rukou babylonského krále a toto město skončí v plamenech!“24Cidkiáš na to Jeremiášovi řekl: „Ať se o těch slovech nikdo nedozví, jinak zemřeš.25Až se velmoži doslechnou, že jsem s tebou mluvil, přijdou za tebou a budou tě vyslýchat: ‚Pověz nám, co jsi říkal králi a co král tobě. Nic nám netaj, nebo tě zabijeme!‘26Odpověz jim: „Prosil jsem krále o slitování, aby mě neposílal zpátky do Jonatanova domu, abych tam neumřel.‘“[1]27Všichni velmoži pak přišli za Jeremiášem a vyslýchali ho. On jim ale odpovídal přesně podle králových pokynů, a tak od něj odešli s nepořízenou. Nikdo z nich totiž jeho rozhovor s králem neslyšel.28Jeremiáš pak zůstal na strážním nádvoří až do dne, kdy byl Jeruzalém dobyt. K dobytí Jeruzaléma došlo takto:
1Schefatja, der Sohn Mattans, Gedalja, der Sohn Paschhurs, Juchal, der Sohn Schelemjas, und Paschhur, der Sohn Malkijas, hörten die Worte, die Jeremia zum ganzen Volk redete:2So spricht der HERR: Wer in dieser Stadt bleibt, der stirbt durch Schwert, Hunger und Pest. Wer aber zu den Chaldäern hinausgeht, der wird überleben; er wird sein Leben als Beute erhalten und am Leben bleiben. (Jr 21,9)3So spricht der HERR: Diese Stadt wird ganz sicher dem Heer des Königs von Babel in die Hand gegeben werden und er wird sie erobern.4Darauf sagten die Beamten zum König: Dieser Mann muss getötet werden, denn er lähmt die Hände der Krieger, die in dieser Stadt übrig geblieben sind, und die Hände des ganzen Volkes, wenn er solche Worte zu ihnen redet. Denn dieser Mann sucht nicht Heil für dieses Volk, sondern Unheil.5Der König Zidkija erwiderte: Siehe, er ist in eurer Hand; denn der König vermag nichts gegen euch.6Da ergriffen sie Jeremia und warfen ihn in die Zisterne des Königssohns Malkija, die sich im Wachhof befand; man ließ ihn an Stricken hinunter. In der Zisterne war kein Wasser, sondern nur Schlamm und Jeremia sank in den Schlamm.
Jeremias Rettung durch Ebed-Melech und seine zweite heimliche Unterredung mit Zidkija
7Der Kuschiter Ebed-Melech, ein Höfling, der im königlichen Palast bedienstet war, hörte, dass man Jeremia in die Zisterne geworfen hatte, während der König sich am Benjamintor aufhielt. (Jr 39,15)8Da verließ Ebed-Melech den Palast und sagte zum König:9Mein Herr und König, schlecht war alles, was diese Männer dem Propheten Jeremia angetan haben; sie haben ihn in die Zisterne geworfen, damit er dort unten verhungert. Denn es gibt in der Stadt kein Brot mehr.10Da befahl der König dem Kuschiter Ebed-Melech: Nimm dir von hier dreißig Männer mit und zieh den Propheten Jeremia aus der Zisterne herauf, bevor er stirbt.11Ebed-Melech nahm die Männer mit sich und ging zum Palast, in den Raum unterhalb der Vorratskammer. Dort holte er Stücke von abgelegten und zerrissenen Kleidern und ließ sie an Stricken zu Jeremia in die Zisterne hinunter.12Dann sagte der Kuschiter Ebed-Melech zu Jeremia: Leg die Stücke der abgelegten und zerrissenen Kleider in deine Achselhöhlen unter die Stricke! Und Jeremia machte es so.13Nun zogen sie Jeremia an den Stricken hoch und brachten ihn aus der Zisterne herauf. Von da an blieb Jeremia im Wachhof.14König Zidkija sandte hin, um den Propheten Jeremia zu sich an den dritten Eingang beim Haus des HERRN zu holen. Der König sagte zu Jeremia: Ich möchte dich nach einem Gotteswort fragen. Verschweig mir nichts!15Jeremia antwortete Zidkija: Wenn ich es dir verkünde, lässt du mich bestimmt umbringen, und wenn ich dir einen Rat gebe, hörst du nicht auf mich.16Da schwor König Zidkija dem Jeremia heimlich und sagte: So wahr der HERR lebt, der uns dieses Leben gegeben hat, ich lasse dich nicht umbringen und gebe dich nicht in die Hand jener Männer, die dir nach dem Leben trachten.17Hierauf sagte Jeremia zu Zidkija: So spricht der HERR, der Gott der Heerscharen, der Gott Israels: Wenn du wirklich hinausgehst zu den Heerführern des Königs von Babel, dann ist dein Leben gerettet, diese Stadt wird nicht im Feuer verbrannt und du bleibst am Leben, du und dein Haus.18Gehst du aber nicht hinaus zu den Heerführern des Königs von Babel, dann wird diese Stadt den Chaldäern ausgeliefert. Sie werden sie im Feuer verbrennen und du selbst wirst ihrer Hand nicht entrinnen.19König Zidkija entgegnete Jeremia: Ich habe Angst vor den Judäern, die bereits zu den Chaldäern abgefallen sind; man könnte mich ihnen ausliefern und sie würden mir übel mitspielen.20Jeremia versicherte: Man wird dich nicht ausliefern. Hör doch auf die Stimme des HERRN, in dem, was ich zu dir rede, damit es dir gut geht und dein Leben gerettet ist!21Weigerst du dich aber hinauszugehen, so ist dies das Wort, was der HERR mich sehen ließ:22Siehe, alle Frauen, die im Palast des Königs von Juda übrig geblieben sind, werden dann zu den Heerführern des Königs von Babel hinausgeführt und dabei klagen:
Überlistet, hereingelegt / haben dich deine guten Freunde;
stecken deine Füße im Sumpf, / so machen sich alle davon.23Alle deine Frauen und Kinder wird man zu den Chaldäern hinausführen; auch du wirst ihrer Hand nicht entrinnen, sondern wirst von der Hand des Königs von Babel ergriffen werden; diese Stadt aber wirst du im Feuer verbrennen. (Jr 32,4; Jr 34,3)24Zidkija sagte zu Jeremia: Niemand darf von diesen Worten erfahren, sonst musst du sterben.25Wenn aber die Beamten erfahren, dass ich mit dir geredet habe, werden sie zu dir kommen und dich auffordern: Teil uns mit, was du zum König gesagt hast! Verheimliche uns nichts, sonst töten wir dich! - Und teil uns auch mit, was der König zu dir gesagt hat!26Dann antworte ihnen: Ich ließ meine Bitte vor den König gelangen, mich nicht ins Haus Jonatans zurückbringen zu lassen, weil ich dort sterben würde.27Und tatsächlich kamen alle Beamten zu Jeremia und fragten ihn. Er antwortete ihnen genauso, wie ihm der König geboten hatte. Da ließen sie von ihm ab; denn niemand hatte das Gespräch mitgehört.28So blieb Jeremia im Wachhof bis zu dem Tag, an dem Jerusalem erobert wurde. Und dies geschah, als Jerusalem erobert wurde: (Jr 37,21)

He shall have his life as a prize of war, and live. (Jr 21,9; Jr 38,17)3Thus says the Lord: This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon and be taken.” (Jr 32,3)4Then the officials said to the king, “Let this man be put to death, for he is weakening the hands of the soldiers who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their harm.” (Jr 6,24; Jr 26,11; Jr 33,9)5King Zedekiah said, “Behold, he is in your hands, for the king can do nothing against you.” (Jr 38,24)6So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king’s son, which was in the court of the guard, letting Jeremiah down by ropes. And there was no water in the cistern, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud. (Gn 37,24; Ž 69,14; Jr 32,2; Jr 37,16; Jr 38,11; Jr 38,13; Za 9,11)
Jeremiah Rescued from the Cistern
7When Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch who was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern—the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate— (Iz 56,3; Jr 29,2; Jr 37,13; Jr 39,16; Sk 8,27)8Ebed-melech went from the king’s house and said to the king, (Jr 38,7)9“My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they did to Jeremiah the prophet by casting him into the cistern, and he will die there of hunger, for there is no bread left in the city.” (Jr 11,22; Jr 14,16; Jr 14,18; Jr 19,9; Jr 37,21)10Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, “Take thirty men with you from here, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.” (Jr 38,7)11So Ebed-melech took the men with him and went to the house of the king, to a wardrobe in the storehouse, and took from there old rags and worn-out clothes, which he let down to Jeremiah in the cistern by ropes. Jeremiah Warns Zedekiah Again
14King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah the prophet and received him at the third entrance of the temple of the Lord. The king said to Jeremiah, “I will ask you a question; hide nothing from me.”15Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “If I tell you, will you not surely put me to death? And if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.”16Then King Zedekiah swore secretly to Jeremiah, “As the Lord lives, who made our souls, I will not put you to death or deliver you into the hand of these men who seek your life.” (Rt 3,13; Iz 57,16; Jr 37,17; Jr 38,1)17Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, “Thus says the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: If you will surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then your life shall be spared, and this city shall not be burned with fire, and you and your house shall live. (2Kr 24,12; Jr 27,12; Jr 34,4; Jr 38,2; Jr 38,21; Jr 39,3)18But if you do not surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then this city shall be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hand.” (Jr 21,10; Jr 38,17)19King Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, “I am afraid of the Judeans who have deserted to the Chaldeans, lest I be handed over to them and they deal cruelly with me.” (Jr 37,13)20Jeremiah said, “You shall not be given to them. 1Then Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashur the son of Malchiah, heard the words that Jeremiah had spoken unto all the people, saying,2Thus saith the LORD, He that remaineth in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: but he that goeth forth to the Chaldeans shall live; for he shall have his life for a prey, and shall live.3Thus saith the LORD, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the king of Babylon' army, which shall take it.4Therefore the princes said unto the king, We beseech thee, let this man be put to death: for thus he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt.5Then Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.6Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.28So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken: and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.
