1 I stalo se vedlé řeči Samuelovy všemu lidu Izraelskému. Nebo když vytáhl Izrael proti Filistinským k boji, a položili se při Eben-Ezer, Filistinští pak položili se v Afeku; 2 A když se sšikovali Filistinští proti Izraelovi, a již se potýkali: poražen jest Izrael od Filistinských, tak že jich zbito v té bitvě na poli takměř čtyři tisíce mužů. 3 I navrátil se lid do stanů, a řekli starší Izraelští: Proč nás dnes Hospodin porazil před Filistinskými? Vezměme k sobě z Sílo truhlu smlouvy Hospodinovy, ať přijde mezi nás, a vysvobodí nás z rukou nepřátel našich. 4 Poslal tedy lid do Sílo, a vzali odtud truhlu smlouvy Hospodina zástupů, sedícího na cherubínech. Byli také tam dva synové Elí s truhlou smlouvy Boží, Ofni a Fínes. 5 Když pak přinesena byla truhla smlouvy Hospodinovy do vojska, zkřikl všecken Izrael s velikým plésáním, až země vzněla. 6 Uslyševše pak Filistinští hluk plésání, řekli: Jaký jest to hlas výskání velikého tohoto v vojště Hebrejském? I poznali, že truhla Hospodinova přišla do vojska. 7 Protož báli se Filistinští, když praveno bylo: Přišel Bůh do vojska jejich; a řekli: Běda nám, nebo nebylo prvé nic k tomu podobného. 8 Běda nám! Kdo nás vysvobodí z ruky těch bohů silných? Tiť jsou bohové, kteříž zbili Egypt všelikou ranou i na poušti. 9 Posilňte se a buďte muži, ó Filistinští, abyste nesloužili těm Hebrejským, jako oni sloužili vám; buďtež tedy muži a bojujte. 10 Bojovali tedy Filistinští, a poražen jest Izrael, a utíkali jeden každý do stanu svého. I byla ta porážka veliká velmi, nebo padlo z Izraele třidceti tisíc pěších; 11 Také truhla Boží vzata, a dva synové Elí zabiti, Ofni a Fínes. 12 Běže pak jeden Beniaminský z bitvy, přišel do Sílo téhož dne, maje roucho roztržené a hlavu prstí posypanou. 13 Přišel tedy, a aj, Elí seděl na stolici při cestě, hledě, nebo srdce jeho lekalo se za truhlu Boží; a když všel muž ten, a oznámil v městě, kvílilo všecko město. 14 A uslyšev Elí hlas křiku toho, řekl: Jaký jest to hlas hřmotu tohoto? Muž pak ten pospíchaje, přiběhl, aby oznámil Elí. 15 (A byl Elí v devadesáti a osmi letech; oči také jeho byly již pošly, a nemohl viděti.) 16 I řekl muž ten k Elí: Já jdu z bitvy, z bitvy zajisté utekl jsem dnes. I dí jemu on: Co se tam stalo, můj synu? 17 Odpověděl ten posel a řekl: Utekl Izrael před Filistinskými, také i porážka veliká stala se v lidu, ano i oba synové tvoji zabiti jsou, Ofni a Fínes, a truhla Boží jest vzata. 18 I stalo se, že jakž jmenoval truhlu Boží, spadl Elí s stolice nazpět při úhlu brány, a tak zlomiv šíji, umřel; nebo byl muž starý a těžký. On soudil Izraele čtyřidceti let. 19 Nevěsta pak jeho, manželka Fínesova, jsuc těhotná a blízká porodu, uslyševši také tu pověst, že by truhla Boží vzata byla, a že umřel tchán její i muž její, sklonila se a porodila; nebo se obořily na ni úzkosti její. 20 A v ten čas, když ona umírala, řekly, kteréž stály při ní: Neboj se, však jsi porodila syna. Kteráž nic neodpověděla, aniž toho připustila k srdci svému. 21 I nazvala dítě Ichabod, řkuci: Přestěhovala se sláva z Izraele; proto že vzata byla truhla Boží, a umřel tchán i muž její. 22 Protož řekla: Přestěhovala se sláva z Izraele, nebo vzata jest truhla Boží.

1 Samuelovo slovo se týkalo celého Izraele. Izrael vytáhl do boje proti Pelištejcům. Utábořili se u Eben-ezeru (to je u Kamene pomoci); Pelištejci se utábořili v Afeku 2 a seřadili se proti Izraeli. Rozpoutal se boj a Izrael byl od Pelištejců poražen; ti pobili v bitvě na poli asi čtyři tisíce mužů. 3 Když se lid sešel v táboře, řekli izraelští starší: „Proč nás Hospodin dnes před Pelištejci porazil? Vezměme si ze Šíla schránu Hospodinovy smlouvy, ať přijde mezi nás a zachrání nás ze spárů našich nepřátel.“ 4 Lid tedy poslal do Šíla a přinesli odtud schránu smlouvy Hospodina zástupů, trůnícího na cherubech. Se schránou Boží smlouvy tam byli oba synové Élího, Chofní a Pinchas. 5 Když schrána Hospodinovy smlouvy přicházela do tábora, spustil všechen Izrael mohutný válečný ryk, až země duněla. 6 Pelištejci uslyšeli válečný ryk a ptali se: „Co znamená tento mohutný válečný ryk v táboře Hebrejů?“ Pak zjistili, že Hospodinova schrána přišla do tábora. 7 Tu se Pelištejci začali bát. Řekli: „Bůh přišel do jejich tábora.“ A naříkali: „Běda nám! Dosud se nic takového nestalo. 8 Běda nám! Kdo nás vysvobodí z rukou těch vznešených bohů? To jsou přece ti bohové, kteří pobili Egypt všelijakými ranami na poušti. 9 Vzchopte se! Vzmužte se, Pelištejci, ať neotročíte Hebrejům, jako oni otročili vám. Vzmužte se a dejte se do boje!“ 10 Pelištejci tedy bojovali a Izrael byl poražen; každý utíkal ke svému stanu. Byla to převeliká rána. Z Izraele padlo třicet tisíc pěších. 11 I Boží schrána byla vzata a oba synové Élího, Chofní a Pinchas, zahynuli. 12 Onoho dne nějaký Benjamínec utekl z bitvy a dorazil do Šíla; měl roztržený šat a na hlavě hlínu. 13 Když přiběhl, Élí právě seděl na stolci a vyhlížel na cestu, neboť se v srdci třásl o Boží schránu. Muž přiběhl, aby v městě oznámil porážku. Celé město se dalo do úpěnlivého křiku. 14 Élí slyšel ten úpěnlivý křik a ptal se: „Co je to za hrozný hluk?“ Muž přispěchal a oznámil to Élímu. 15 Élímu bylo devadesát osm let, oči měl zakalené a neviděl. 16 Muž řekl Élímu: „Přicházím z bitvy. Ano, utekl jsem dnes z bitvy.“ Élí se zeptal: „Co se stalo, můj synu?“ 17 Tu posel odpověděl: „Izrael utekl před Pelištejci. Lid utrpěl zdrcující porážku. I oba tvoji synové, Chofní a Pinchas, jsou mrtvi. 1 Samuel měl slovo pro celý Izrael. Tehdy Izrael vytáhl do boje proti Filištínům. To jsou ti bohové, kteří bili Egypt všemožnými ranami na poušti! 9 Jen odvahu! Vzmužte se, Filištíni, ať nemusíme sloužit Hebrejům, jako oni sloužili vám. Vzmužte se a bojujte!“ 10 A Filištíni bojovali. Izrael byl poražen a rozutekli se každý domů. Byla to hrozná porážka; z Izraele padlo 30 000 pěších 11 a Boží truhla padla do zajetí. Oba Elího synové, Chofni a Pinchas, zemřeli. 12 Nějaký Benjamínec toho dne zběhl z bitvy a dorazil do Šíla. Sie schlugen ihr Lager bei Eben-Eser auf und die Philister hatten ihr Lager in Afek.^[1] 2 Die Philister rückten in Schlachtordnung gegen Israel vor und der Kampf wogte hin und her. Israel wurde von den Philistern besiegt, die von Israels Heer auf dem Feld etwa viertausend Mann erschlugen. (1S 28,1) 3 Als das Volk ins Lager zurückkam, sagten die Ältesten Israels: Warum hat der HERR heute die Philister über uns siegen lassen? Wir wollen die Bundeslade des HERRN aus Schilo zu uns holen; er soll in unsere Mitte kommen und uns aus der Hand unserer Feinde retten. Als sie die Nachricht vernahm, dass die Lade Gottes weggeschleppt und dass ihr Schwiegervater und ihr Mann tot waren, sank sie zu Boden und gebar; denn die Wehen waren über sie gekommen. 20 Als sie im Sterben lag, sagten die Frauen, die um sie herumstanden: Fürchte dich nicht, du hast einen Sohn geboren. The Philistines Capture the Ark

12 A man of Benjamin ran from the battle line and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes torn and with dirt on his head. (Jz 7,6) 13 When he arrived, Eli was sitting on his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and told the news, all the city cried out.
