1 A tak potýkali se Filistinští s Izraelem. Muži pak Izraelští utíkali před Filistinskými a padli, zbiti jsouce na hoře Gelboe. 2 I stihali Filistinští Saule a syny jeho, a zabili Filistinští Jonatu a Abinadaba a Melchisua, syny Saulovy. 3 Když se pak zsilila bitva proti Saulovi, trefili na něj střelci, muži s luky; i postřelen jest velmi od těch střelců. 4 I řekl Saul oděnci svému: Vytrhni meč svůj a probodni mne jím, aby přijdouce ti neobřezanci, neprobodli mne, a neučinili sobě ze mne posměchu. Ale nechtěl oděnec jeho, nebo se bál velmi. A pochytiv Saul meč, nalehl na něj. 5 Tedy vida oděnec jeho, že umřel Saul, nalehl i on na meč svůj a umřel s ním. 6 A tak umřel Saul a tři synové jeho, a oděnec jeho, ano i všickni muži jeho v ten den spolu. 7 Když pak uzřeli synové Izraelští, kteříž bydlili za tím údolím, a kteříž bydlili za Jordánem, že zutíkali muži Izraelští, nadto že Saul i synové jeho zahynuli, opustivše města, také utíkali. I přišli Filistinští a bydlili v nich. 8 A když bylo nazejtří, přišli Filistinští, aby zloupili pobité; i nalezli Saule a tři syny jeho ležící na hoře Gelboe. 9 I sťali hlavu jeho a svlékli odění jeho, a poslali po zemi Filistinské vůkol, aby to ohlášeno bylo v chrámě modl jejich i lidu. 10 I složili odění jeho v chrámě Astarot, tělo pak jeho přibili na zdi Betsan. 11 Tedy uslyšavše o tom obyvatelé Jábes Galád, co učinili Filistinští Saulovi, 12 Zdvihli se všickni muži silní, a jdouce celou noc, sňali tělo Saulovo i těla synů jeho se zdi Betsanské; a když se navrátili do Jábes, spálili je tam. 13 A vzavše kosti jejich, pochovali je pod stromem v Jábes, a postili se sedm dní.

SAULOVA SMRT - Izraelci byli poraženi od Pelištejců na pohoří Gilbóa. Saul a jeho synové padli, obyvatelé Jábeše v Gileádu pochovali jejich ostatky.

1 Pelištejci bojovali proti Izraeli. Izraelští muži před Pelištejci utíkali a padali pobiti v pohoří Gilbóa. 2 Pelištejci se pustili za Saulem a jeho syny. I pobili Pelištejci Saulovy syny Jónatana, Abínádaba a Malkíšúu. 3 Pak zesílil boj proti Saulovi. Objevili ho lukostřelci a těžce ho postřelili. 4 Saul řekl svému zbrojnoši: „Vytas meč a probodni mě jím, než přijdou ti neobřezanci, aby mě neprobodli oni a nezneuctili.“ Zbrojnoš však nechtěl, velmi se bál. Saul tedy uchopil meč a nalehl na něj. 5 Když zbrojnoš viděl, že Saul zemřel, také on nalehl na svůj meč a zemřel s ním. 6 Toho dne spolu zemřeli Saul, jeho tři synové, jeho zbrojnoš i všichni jeho mužové. 7 Když izraelští muži na druhé straně doliny a na druhé straně Jordánu viděli, že izraelští muži utekli a že Saul a jeho synové zemřeli, opouštěli města a utíkali. Přišli Pelištejci a usadili se v nich. 8 Pelištejci přišli druhého dne, aby obrali pobité, a našli přitom Saula a jeho tři syny padlé v pohoří Gilbóa. 9 Uťali mu hlavu, vzali zbroj a poslali kolovat po pelištejské zemi jako radostné poselství pro dům svých modlářských stvůr i pro lid. 10 Jeho zbroj uložili v Aštartině domě a jeho mrtvolu přibili na hradby Bét-šanu. 11 I uslyšeli o něm obyvatelé Jábeše v Gileádu, o tom, co Pelištejci se Saulem provedli. 12 Všichni válečníci se vypravili, šli celou noc a sňali mrtvolu Saulovu i mrtvoly jeho synů z bétšanských hradeb. Když došli do Jábeše, spálili je tam. 13 Pak posbírali jejich kosti a pochovali je v Jábeši pod tamaryškem. Poté se postili sedm dní.

Pak přišli Filištíni a obsadili je. 8 Druhého dne, když Filištíni přišli do pohoří Gilboa obírat pobité, našli tam ležet Saula a jeho syny. 9 Usekli mu hlavu, svlékli mu zbroj a poslali to po celé filištínské zemi, aby tu zprávu ohlásili v chrámu jejich model i mezi lidem. 10 Jeho výzbroj uložili v chrámu Aštarot a tělo přibili na hradbu Bet-šanu. 11 Když se obyvatelé Jábeš-gileádu doslechli, co Filištíni provedli se Saulem, 12 všichni jejich bojovníci vyrazili a šli celou noc. Sňali Saulovo tělo i těla jeho synů z betšanské hradby, vrátili se do Jábeše a tam je spálili. 13 Potom vzali jejich ostatky a pohřbili je pod jábešským tamaryškem. Sedm dní se pak postili.

Die Bogenschützen hatten ihn entdeckt und es befiel ihn heftiges Beben vor den Schützen. (2S 1,6) 4 Da sagte Saul zu seinem Waffenträger: Zieh dein Schwert und durchbohre mich damit! Sonst kommen diese Unbeschnittenen, durchbohren mich und treiben ihren Mutwillen mit mir. Der Waffenträger wollte es nicht tun; denn er hatte große Angst. Da nahm Saul selbst das Schwert und stürzte sich hinein.
