1I sebrali Filistinští vojska svá k boji, a shromáždili se u Socho, kteréž jest Judovo, a položili se mezi Socho a Azeka na pomezí Dammim.2Ale Saul a muži Izraelští sebravše se, položili se v údolí Elah, a sšikovali se k bitvě proti Filistinským.3I stáli Filistinští na hoře s strany jedné, a Izraelští stáli na hoře s strany druhé, a údolí bylo mezi nimi.4I vyšel muž bojovník z vojska Filistinského, Goliáš jménem, z Gát, zvýší šesti loket a dlani.5Lebka pak ocelivá na hlavě jeho, a v pancíř brněný byl oblečen, kterýžto pancíř vážil pět tisíc lotů oceli.6Též plechovice ocelivé byly na nohách jeho, a pavéza ocelivá mezi rameny jeho.7A dřevo u kopí jeho jako vratidlo tkadlcovské, železo pak ostré kopí jeho vážilo šest set lotů železa; a ten, kterýž nosil braň jeho, šel před ním.8I postavil se, a volal na vojska Izraelská, řka k nim: Nač jste to vyšli, vojensky se sšikovavše? Zdaliž já nejsem Filistinský, a vy služebníci Saulovi? Vybeřte z sebe muže, kterýž by sstoupil ke mně.9Jestližeť mi bude moci odolati a zabije mne, tedy budeme služebníci vaši; pakliť já přemohu jej a zabiji ho, budete vy služebníci naši, a sloužiti budete nám.10Pravil také ten Filistinský: Já jsem dnes zhaněl vojska Izraelská. Vydejtež mi muže, abychom se bili spolu.11A když uslyšel Saul i všecken Izrael slova Filistinského taková, ulekli se a báli se velmi.12David pak ten syn muže Efratejského z Betléma Judova, (jehož jméno Izai, kterýž měl osm synů, a již se byl sstaral za dnů Saule, přiblíživ se k lidem sešlým.13Tři také synové Izai starší šedše, táhli na vojnu s Saulem. Jména těch tří synů jeho, kteříž byli šli k boji: Eliáb prvorozený, a druhý po něm Abinadab, třetí pak Samma.14Ale David byl nejmladší. A tak ti tři synové starší odešli s Saulem).15David tedy odšel od Saule a navrátil se, aby pásl stádo otce svého v Betlémě.16I přicházel ten Filistinský ráno a večer, a stavěl se po čtyřidceti dní.17Tedy řekl Izai Davidovi synu svému: Vezmi i hned pro bratří své efi pražmy této a deset chlebů těchto, a běž do vojska k bratřím svým.18A deset syřečků mladých těchto doneseš hejtmanu, a navštívě bratří své, pozdravíš jich, a základ jejich vyzdvihneš.19Saul pak i oni, i všickni muži Izraelští byli v údolí Elah, bojujíce proti Filistinským.20A tak vstav David tím raněji a zanechav stáda při strážném, vzal to a šel, jakž mu byl přikázal Izai. I přišel až k šancům, a aj, vojsko vycházelo do šiku a křičelo k bitvě.21I sšikovali se Izraelští, ano i Filistinští, vojsko proti vojsku.22Protož David zanechav břemene, kteréž s sebe složil u strážného při břemeních, běžel do vojska; a když přišel, tázal se bratří svých, jak se mají.23A když on s nimi mluvil, aj, muž bojovník jménem Goliáš, Filistinský z Gát, vycházel z vojska Filistinských a mluvil jako i prvé; což slyšel i David.24Všickni pak muži Izraelští, jakž uzřeli toho muže, utíkali před tváří jeho, a báli se náramně.25I mluvili Izraelští mezi sebou: Viděli-li jste toho muže, kterýž vyšel? Nebo aby pohanění uvedl na Izraele, vyšel. Kdož by ho zabil, zbohatí ho král bohatstvím velikým, a dceru svou dá jemu, i dům otce jeho osvobodí v Izraeli.26I mluvil David mužům, kteříž stáli u něho, a řekl: Co bude dáno muži tomu, kterýž by zabil toho Filistinského a odjal pohanění od Izraele? Nebo kdo jest Filistinský neobřezaný ten, že pohanění uvodí na vojsko Boha živého?27Odpověděl jemu lid v táž slova, řka: To bude dáno muži, kterýž by ho zabil.28A uslyšev Eliáb, bratr jeho nejstarší, že mluví s těmi muži, rozhněval se Eliáb velmi na Davida, a řekl: Proč jsi sem přišel? A komus nechal kolikasi těch ovec na poušti? Známť já pýchu tvou a zlost srdce tvého, žes přišel dívati se bitvě.29I řekl David: Což jsem pak učinil? Zdaž mi nebylo poručeno?30Tedy šel od něho k jinému, jehož se tázal jako i prvé. I odpověděl jemu lid tak jako i prvé.31A tak roznesla se slova, kteráž mluvil David, a oznámili je Saulovi. Kterýžto povolal ho.32I řekl David Saulovi: Nechť se neleká srdce člověka pro něho; služebník tvůj půjde a bude se bíti s Filistinským tímto.33Ale Saul řekl Davidovi: Nebudeš moci jíti proti Filistinskému tomu, abys se potýkal s ním; nebo mládenček jsi, on pak jest muž bojovný od mladosti své.34Odpověděl David Saulovi: Služebník tvůj pastýřem byl stáda otce svého, a když přicházel lev aneb nedvěd, a bral dobytče z stáda,35Já dostihal jsem ho a bil jsem jej, a vydíral jsem je z hrdla jeho. Pakli se na mne obořil, tedy ujma ho za čelist, bil jsem jej, až jsem ho i zabil.36I lva i nedvěda zabil služebník tvůj; budeť tedy Filistinský neobřezanec ten jako který z nich, nebo zhaněl vojska Boha živého.37Řekl také David: Hospodin, kterýž vytrhl mne z moci lva a z moci nedvěda, onť mne vytrhne z ruky Filistinského tohoto. Tedy řekl Saul Davidovi: Jdi, a Hospodin budiž s tebou.38I dal Saul obléci Davida v šaty své, a vstavil lebku ocelivou na hlavu jeho, a oblékl ho v pancíř.39Připásal také David meč jeho na ty šaty jeho, a chtěl jíti, ale že tomu nezvykl, protož řekl David Saulovi: Nemohuť v tom jíti, nebo jsem nepřivykl. I složil to David s sebe.40A vzav hůl svou do ruky své, vybral sobě pět kamenů hladkých z potoku, a vložil je do mošničky pastýřské, kterouž měl, totiž do pytlíku, a prak svůj v ruce nesl, a přiblížil se k Filistinskému.41Bral se také i Filistinský, jda a přibližuje se k Davidovi, a muž ten, kterýž nesl braň jeho, šel před ním.42A když pohleděl Filistinský a uzřel Davida, pohrdal jím, proto že byl mládenček, a ryšavý, a krásného vzezření.43I řekl Filistinský Davidovi: Což jsem pes, že jdeš proti mně s holí? A zlořečil Filistinský Davidovi skrze bohy své.44Řekl také Filistinský Davidovi: Poď ke mně, a dámť tělo tvé ptákům nebeským a šelmám zemským.45Odpověděl David Filistinskému: Ty jdeš ke mně s mečem a s kopím a s pavézou, ale já k tobě jdu ve jménu Hospodina zástupů, Boha vojsk Izraelských, kterémuž jsi ty utrhal.46Dnešního dne zavře tě Hospodin v ruku mou, a zabiji tě, a setnu hlavu tvou s tebe, a vydám těla vojska Filistinského dnes ptákům nebeským a šelmám zemským, a pozná všecka země, žeť jest Bůh v Izraeli.47A zvíť všecko shromáždění toto, že ne mečem ani kopím vysvobozuje Hospodin; (nebo Hospodinův jest boj), protož vydáť vás v ruce naše.48Stalo se pak, že když vstal ten Filistinský, a šel, přibližuje se proti Davidovi, pospíšil i David a běžel proti Filistinskému, aby se s ním potýkal.49V tom David vztáh ruku svou k mošničce, vyňal z ní kámen, kterýmž hodil z praku, a udeřil Filistinského v čelo jeho tak, že kámen uvázl v čele jeho. I padl tváří svou na zem.50A tak přemohl David Filistinského prakem a kamenem, a udeřiv Filistinského, zabil jej, ačkoli David žádného meče v ruce neměl.51A přiběh David, stál nad Filistinským. Potom pochytiv meč jeho, dobyl ho z pošvy a zabil jej, a sťal jím hlavu jeho. To vidouce Filistinští, že umřel nejsilnější jejich, utíkali.52A protož vstavše muži Izraelští a Judští, zkřikli a honili Filistinské, až kde se vchází do údolí, a až k branám Akaron. I padali, raněni jsouce, Filistinští po cestě k Saraim, až do Gát a až do Akaron.53A navrátivše se synové Izraelští od honění Filistinských, vzebrali tábor jejich.54Potom David vzav hlavu toho Filistinského, přinesl ji do Jeruzaléma, a odění jeho složil v stanu svém.55Tehdáž pak, když viděl Saul Davida jdoucího proti tomu Filistinskému, řekl Abnerovi hejtmanu vojska: Abner, čí jest syn ten mládenček? Odpověděl Abner: Jako jest živa duše tvá, králi, že nevím.56Ale král řekl: Zeptej ty se, čí jest syn mládenec ten.57Když se pak vracoval David od zabití Filistinského toho, pojav ho Abner, přivedl jej před Saule, an drží hlavu Filistinského v ruce své.58I řekl jemu Saul: Čí jsi syn, mládenče? Odpověděl David: Syn služebníka tvého Izai Betlémského.
— David a Goliáš - David ve jménu Hospodina zástupů poráží zpupného Pelištejce a vysvobozuje Izraele z moci nepřátel.
1 Pelištejci shromáždili své šiky k bitvě. Shromáždili se do Sóka, jež patří Judovi, a utábořili se mezi Sókem a Azekou v Efes-damímu.2 Také Saul a izraelští muži se shromáždili, utábořili se v dolině Posvátného stromu a seřadili se k bitvě proti Pelištejcům.3 Na hoře z jedné strany stáli Pelištejci, na hoře z druhé strany stál Izrael a mezi nimi bylo údolí.4 I vycházíval z pelištejských šiků soubojový zápasník jménem Goliáš z Gatu, vysoký šest loket a jednu píď.5 Na hlavě měl bronzovou přilbu a byl oděn do šupinatého pancíře; váha pancíře byla pět tisíc šekelů bronzu.6 Na nohou měl bronzové holenice a na ramenou bronzový oštěp.7 Násada jeho kopí byla jako tkalcovské vratidlo a hrot jeho kopí vážil šest set šekelů železa. Před ním chodíval štítonoš.8 Goliáš stával a volal na izraelské řady. Říkal jim: „Proč vycházíte a řadíte se k bitvě? Což nejsem já Pelištejec a vy služebníci Saulovi? Vyberte si někoho, ať ke mně sestoupí.9 Když mě v boji přemůže a zabije mě, budeme vašimi otroky. Avšak jestliže já přemohu jeho a zabiji ho, budete vy našimi otroky a budete nám sloužit.“10 A Pelištejec dodával: „Dneska jsem potupil izraelské řady. Vydejte mi někoho a budeme spolu bojovat.“11 Kdykoli Saul a celý Izrael slyšeli tato Pelištejcova slova, děsili se a velice se báli. 12 David byl synem Efratejce, toho z Betléma Judova, jenž se jmenoval Jišaj a měl osm synů. Za dnů Saulových byl ten muž příliš starý, aby mohl jít mezi vojáky,13 ale šli tři nejstarší Jišajovi synové; odešli se Saulem do války. Jména jeho tří synů, kteří odešli do války, jsou: prvorozený Elíab, druhý po něm Abínádab a třetí Šama.14David, ten byl nejmladší. Se Saulem odešli tři nejstarší. 15 David odešel od Saula a vrátil se, aby pásl stádo svého otce v Betlémě.16 A Pelištejec se předváděl za časného jitra i navečer a stavěl se na odiv po čtyřicet dní. 17 Jišaj vybídl svého syna Davida: „Vezmi pro své bratry éfu praženého zrní a těchto deset chlebů a běž do tábora za svými bratry.18 Těchto deset homolek sýra doneseš veliteli nad tisíci. Navštívíš své bratry s přáním pokoje a převezmeš od nich vzkazy.19 Bojují se Saulem a všemi izraelskými muži proti Pelištejcům v dolině Posvátného stromu.“20 Za časného jitra přenechal David stádo hlídači, naložil si všechno a šel, jak mu Jišaj přikázal. Když přicházel k ležení, vojsko vycházelo, řadilo se a vydávalo válečný pokřik.21 Izrael i Pelištejci se seřadili, řada proti řadě.22 David složil své zásoby u strážného nad zásobami a běžel k bojové řadě. Přišel a popřál svým bratrům pokoj.23 Ještě s nimi mluvil, když tu z řad Pelištejců vystoupil soubojový zápasník jménem Goliáš, Pelištejec z Gatu, a mluvil táž slova jako dříve. David je slyšel.24 Všichni izraelští muži, sotvaže toho muže uviděli, dali se před ním na útěk a velmi se báli.25 A nějaký Izraelec řekl: „Viděli jste toho muže, co vystoupil? Vystupuje, aby tupil Izraele. Avšak toho, kdo ho zabije, zahrne král velikým bohatstvím, dá mu svou dceru a jeho rod učiní v Izraeli svobodným.“ 26 David se tázal mužů, kteří u něho stáli: „Cože dostane muž, který zabije tohoto Pelištejce a sejme z Izraele potupu? Vždyť kdo je ten neobřezaný Pelištejec, že tupí řady živého Boha?“27 Lid mu odpověděl stejně: „To a to dostane muž, který ho zabije.“28 Jeho nejstarší bratr Elíab však slyšel, jak mluvil s muži. Elíab vzplanul proti Davidovi hněvem a okřikl ho: „Proč jsi sem přišel? Komu jsi nechal ten houfeček ovcí na stepi? Však znám tvou drzost i tvé zlé srdce! Přišel jsi sem dolů, aby ses mohl dívat na bitvu.“29 David se otázal: „Copak jsem udělal? Nejde o královo slovo?“30 Obrátil se od něho na jiného a tázal se stejně. A lid mu odpověděl stejně jako poprvé.31 Slova, která David promluvil, se roznesla, hlásili je Saulovi a on ho přijal.32 David Saulovi řekl: „Člověk nesmí klesat na mysli. Tvůj služebník půjde s tím Pelištejcem bojovat.“33 Saul Davidovi odvětil: „Nemůžeš jít proti tomu Pelištejci a bojovat s ním. Jsi přece mladíček, kdežto on je bojovník od mládí.“ 34 David řekl Saulovi: „Tvůj služebník byl pastýřem ovcí svého otce. Když přišel lev anebo medvěd, aby odnesl ze stáda ovci,35hnal jsem se za ním a bil jsem ho a vyrval mu ji z tlamy. Když se proti mně postavil, chytil jsem ho za dolní čelist a bil jsem ho, až jsem ho usmrtil.36 Tvůj služebník ubil jak lva, tak medvěda. A tomu neobřezanému Pelištejci se povede jako jednomu z nich, protože potupil řady živého Boha.“ 37 A David dodal: „Hospodin, který mě vytrhl ze spárů lva a medvěda, ten mě vytrhne i ze spárů tohoto Pelištejce.“ Saul tedy Davidovi řekl: „Jdi; Hospodin buď s tebou!“38 Poté Saul oblékl Davida do svého odění, na hlavu mu dal bronzovou přilbu a oblékl ho do pancíře.39 Na jeho odění si David připásal jeho meč a pokusil se chodit, ale nebyl na to zvyklý. David tedy Saulovi řekl: „Nemohu v tom chodit, nejsem zvyklý.“ A svlékl to ze sebe.40 Vzal si do ruky svou hůl, z potoka vybral pět oblázků, vložil je do své pastýřské torby, do brašny, a s prakem v ruce postupoval proti Pelištejci.41 Pelištejec se k Davidovi pomalu přibližoval a před ním jeho štítonoš.42 Pelištejec se podíval, spatřil Davida a pohrdl jím, protože to byl mladíček, ryšavý, krásného vzhledu.43 Pelištejec na Davida pokřikoval: „Copak jsem pes, že na mě jdeš s holí?“ A Pelištejec zlořečil Davidovi skrze své bohy.44 Pokřikoval na Davida: „Pojď ke mně, ať vydám tvé tělo nebeskému ptactvu a polnímu zvířectvu.“ 45 Ale David Pelištejci odpověděl: „Ty jdeš proti mně s mečem, kopím a oštěpem, já však jdu proti tobě ve jménu Hospodina zástupů, Boha izraelských řad, kterého jsi potupil.46 Ještě dnes mi tě Hospodin vydá do rukou. Zabiji tě a srazím ti hlavu. Ještě dnes vydám mrtvoly z pelištejského tábora nebeskému ptactvu a zemské zvěři. Celý svět pozná, že při Izraeli stojí Bůh.47 A celé toto shromáždění pozná, že Hospodin nezachraňuje mečem a kopím. Vždyť boj je Hospodinův. On vás vydá do našich rukou.“ 48 Když Pelištejec vykročil a přibližoval se k Davidovi, David rychle vyběhl z řady proti Pelištejci.49 David sáhl rukou do mošny, vzal odtud kámen, vymrštil jej z praku a zasáhl Pelištejce do čela. Kámen mu prorazil čelo a on se skácel tváří k zemi.50 Tak zdolal David Pelištejce prakem a kamenem, zasáhl Pelištejce a usmrtil ho, aniž měl v ruce meč.51 David přiběhl a stanul u Pelištejce. Popadl jeho meč, vytrhl jej z pochvy a usmrtil ho; uťal mu jím hlavu. Když Pelištejci viděli, že jejich hrdina je mrtev, dali se na útěk.52 Izraelští a judští muži vyskočili, spustili válečný pokřik a pronásledovali Pelištejce až tam, kudy se vstupuje do údolí, a až k branám Ekrónu; i padali ranění Pelištejci cestou od Šaarajimu až ke Gatu a k Ekrónu.53 Pak Izraelci přestali Pelištejce stíhat a vyplenili jejich tábory.54 David vzal Pelištejcovu hlavu, přinesl ji do Jeruzalémaa jeho zbroj uložil ve svém stanu. 55 Když Saul viděl Davida, jak jde proti Pelištejci, otázal se vojevůdce Abnéra: „Čí syn je ten mládenec, Abnére?“ Abnér mu odvětil: „Jakože jsi živ, králi, nevím.“56 Král mu poručil: „Zeptej se, čí syn je ten mladík.“ 57 Když se David po vítězství nad Pelištejcem vrátil, uvedl ho Abnér před Saula; Pelištejcovu hlavu měl David v ruce.58 Saul se ho otázal: „Čí syn jsi, mládenče?“ David odvětil: „Syn tvého služebníka Jišaje Betlémského.“
1Filištíni tehdy spojili svá vojska a vytáhli do boje. Shromáždili se u judského Socha a utábořili se v Efes-danimu mezi Sochem a Azekou.2Také Saul a izraelští muži se shromáždili. Utábořili se v údolí Ela a sešikovali se k bitvě proti Filištínům.3Filištíni stáli na jednom kopci, Izraelci na protějším a mezi nimi bylo údolí.4Z filištínského tábora vystoupil jejich zápasník jménem Goliáš z Gatu. Byl vysoký šest loktů a píď.[1]5Na hlavě měl bronzovou přilbu. Oblečen byl do bronzového šupinatého pancíře o váze 5000 šekelů.[2]6Na nohou měl bronzové chrániče a na zádech bronzovou šavli.7Jeho kopí mělo násadu jako tkalcovské vratidlo a železný hrot o váze 600 šekelů.[3] Před ním šel štítonoš.8Goliáš se stavěl před izraelské šiky a volal na ně: „Proč jste sem přišli? Šikujete se do boje? Já jsem přece Filištín a vy jste Saulovi sluhové. Vyberte si někoho, ať přijde sem ke mně.9Jestli mě v boji přemůže a zabije, budeme vám sloužit. A jestli já přemůžu a zabiju jeho, budete jako naši otroci sloužit vy nám.“10Potom ten Filištín dodal: „Vyzývám dnes izraelské šiky: Dejte mi někoho, kdo se mnou půjde na souboj!“11Když Saul s celým Izraelem slyšeli slova onoho Filištína, byli zděšeni a hrozně se báli.12David byl synem onoho Efratejce z judského Betléma jménem Jišaj, který měl osm synů. Ten byl v Saulově době už příliš starý,13ale jeho tři nejstarší synové táhli se Saulem do války. Prvorozený se jmenoval Eliab, druhý Abinadab a třetí Šama – tito tři odešli do války.14David byl ale nejmladší. Tři nejstarší odešli se Saulem,15kdežto David se musel od Saula vrátit do Betléma pást ovce svého otce.16Filištín zatím po čtyřicet dnů každé ráno i večer přicházel a předváděl se.17Jednou řekl Jišaj svému synu Davidovi: „Vezmi pro své bratry tady efu[4] praženého zrní a těchto deset chlebů. Běž to odnést do tábora svým bratrům18a tady těch deset kusů sýra vezmi pro velitele jejich oddílu. Navštiv své bratry, vyřiď jim pozdrav a přines od nich zprávy.19Jsou se Saulem a se všemi izraelskými muži v údolí Ela a bojují s Filištíny.“20David tedy ráno vstal, svěřil ovce hlídači, všechno to vzal a šel, jak mu Jišaj přikázal. Dorazil k okraji tábora, právě když vojsko v šiku vyráželo s válečným pokřikem.21Izraelci i Filištíni se seřadili, jeden šik proti druhému.22David nechal své věci u hlídače zásob a běžel k šiku. Když tam dorazil, ptal se bratrů, jak se mají.23Ještě s nimi mluvil, když vtom z filištínských řad vystoupil jejich zápasník jménem Goliáš z Gatu. Vykřikoval tak jako předtím a David to slyšel.24Jakmile Izraelci toho muže spatřili, všichni se před ním v hrozném strachu dali na útěk.25„Vidíte toho muže, co vystoupil?“ říkali Izraelci. „Jde urážet Izrael. Kdyby ho někdo zabil, král by ho zahrnul spoustou bohatství, dal by mu svou dceru a jeho otcovský rod by v Izraeli osvobodil od daní.“26David se mužů kolem sebe zeptal: „Cože dostane ten, kdo toho Filištína zabije a zbaví Izrael té ostudy? Kdo je tenhle filištínský neobřezanec, že uráží šiky živého Boha?“27Muži mu tedy pověděli stejně jako předtím, co čeká toho, kdo by ho zabil.28Jeho nejstarší bratr Eliab ale zaslechl, jak s nimi mluví, a hrozně se na Davida rozhněval: „Proč jsi sem vlastně přišel? A komu jsi svěřil těch pár ovcí na poušti? Znám tu tvou drzost a zlomyslnost! Přišel ses podívat na bitvu, co?“29„Co jsem zase provedl? To se nemůžu zeptat?“ bránil se David.30Potom se obrátil na dalšího se stejnou otázkou a muži mu odpovídali právě tak jako předtím.31To, co David říkal, se rozneslo. Ohlásili to i Saulovi a ten si ho dal zavolat.32„Ať se toho Filištína nikdo neleká!“ řekl David Saulovi. „Tvůj služebník půjde a bude se s ním bít.“33„Nemůžeš se s tím Filištínem bít,“ namítl mu Saul. „Jsi ještě chlapec a on je bojovník už odmalička.“34David mu odpověděl: „Tvůj služebník byl pastýřem ovcí svého otce. Když přišel lev nebo medvěd a vzal ze stáda ovci,35pustil jsem se za ním, srazil jsem ho a vyrval mu ji z tlamy. A když se vrhl na mě, chytil jsem ho za hřívu a tloukl ho, dokud jsem ho nezabil.36Tvůj služebník už zabil lva i medvěda. A tenhle filištínský neobřezanec dopadne stejně, protože urážel šiky živého Boha,“37pokračoval David. „Hospodin, který mě vysvobodil ze spárů lva i medvěda, mě vysvobodí i ze spárů toho Filištína.“ „Tak tedy jdi,“ řekl na to Saul Davidovi. „Kéž je Hospodin s tebou!“38Saul pak Davida nechal obléci do svých šatů, na hlavu mu nasadil bronzovou přilbu a oblékl mu pancíř.39David si na ty jeho šaty připásal také jeho meč a chtěl jít, jenže na to nebyl zvyklý, a tak Saulovi řekl: „V tom jít nemůžu. Schickt mir doch einen Mann, damit wir gegeneinander kämpfen können! (2S 21,21; 2Kr 19,23)11Als Saul und ganz Israel diese Worte des Philisters hörten, erschraken sie und hatten große Angst.12David war der Sohn eines Efratiters namens Isai aus Betlehem in Juda, der acht Söhne hatte. Zur Zeit Sauls war Isai bereits alt und betagt. (Rt 1,2; 1S 16,10)13Die drei ältesten Söhne Isais waren zusammen mit Saul in den Krieg gezogen. Dein Knecht wird hingehen und mit diesem Philister kämpfen.33Saul erwiderte ihm: Du kannst nicht zu diesem Philister hingehen, um mit ihm zu kämpfen; du bist zu jung, er aber ist ein Krieger seit seiner Jugend.34David sagte zu Saul: Dein Knecht hat für seinen Vater die Schafe gehütet. Wenn ein Löwe oder ein Bär kam und ein Lamm aus der Herde wegschleppte, (Sír 47,3)35lief ich hinter ihm her, schlug auf ihn ein und riss das Tier aus seinem Maul. Und wenn er sich dann gegen mich aufrichtete, packte ich ihn an der Mähne und schlug ihn tot. There was no sword in the hand of David.51Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. 1Now the Philistines gathered together their armies to battle, and were gathered together at Shochoh, which belongeth to Judah, and pitched between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim.2And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and pitched by the valley of Elah, and set the battle in array against the Philistines.3And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.4And there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.5And he had an helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass.6And he had greaves of brass upon his legs, and a target of brass between his shoulders.7And the staff of his spear was like a weaver' beam; and his spear' head weighed six hundred shekels of iron: and one bearing a shield went before him.8And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me.9If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.10And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.11When Saul and all Israel heard those words of the Philistine, they were dismayed, and greatly afraid.12Now David was the son of that Ephrathite of Bethlehemjudah, whose name was Jesse; and he had eight sons: and the man went among men for an old man in the days of Saul.13And the three eldest sons of Jesse went and followed Saul to the battle: and the names of his three sons that went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next unto him Abinadab, and the third Shammah.14And David was the youngest: and the three eldest followed Saul.15But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father' sheep at Bethlehem.16And the Philistine drew near morning and evening, and presented himself forty days.17And Jesse said unto David his son, Take now for thy brethren an ephah of this parched corn , and these ten loaves, and run to the camp to thy brethren;18And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren fare, and take their pledge.19Now Saul, and they, and all the men of Israel, were in the valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines.20And David rose up early in the morning, and left the sheep with a keeper, and took, and went, as Jesse had commanded him; and he came to the trench, as the host was going forth to the fight, and shouted for the battle.21For Israel and the Philistines had put the battle in array, army against army.22And David left his carriage in the hand of the keeper of the carriage, and ran into the army, and came and saluted his brethren.23And as he talked with them, behold, there came up the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, out of the armies of the Philistines, and spake according to the same words: and David heard them .24And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore afraid.25And the men of Israel said, Have ye seen this man that is come up? surely to defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father' house free in Israel.26And David spake to the men that stood by him, saying, What shall be done to the man that killeth this Philistine, and taketh away the reproach from Israel? for who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?27And the people answered him after this manner, saying, So shall it be done to the man that killeth him.28And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab' anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.29And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?30And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the same manner: and the people answered him again after the former manner.31And when the words were heard which David spake, they rehearsed them before Saul: and he sent for him.32And David said to Saul, Let no man' heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.33And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.34And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father' sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:35And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.36Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.37David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.38And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.39And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it . And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them . And David put them off him.40And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd' bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.41And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.42And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.43And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.44And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.45Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied.46This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.47And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD', and he will give you into our hands.48And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.49And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it , and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.50So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.51Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.52And the men of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron.53And the children of Israel returned from chasing after the Philistines, and they spoiled their tents.54And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent.55And when Saul saw David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.56And the king said, Enquire thou whose son the stripling is .57And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand.58And Saul said to him, Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.
