1 Stalo se zatím, že umřel Náhas král Ammonitský, a kraloval syn jeho místo něho. 2 I řekl David: Učiním milosrdenství s Chanunem synem Náhasovým, nebo učinil otec jeho milosrdenství nade mnou. Tedy poslal David posly, aby ho potěšili pro otce jeho. I přišli služebníci Davidovi do země synů Ammon k Chanunovi, aby ho těšili. 3 Tedy řekla knížata Ammonitská Chanunovi: Cožť se zdá, že David činí poctivost otci tvému, že poslal k tobě, kteříž by tě potěšili? Zdali ne proto, aby shlédli a vyšpehovali, i podvrátili zemi tuto, přišli služebníci jeho k tobě? 4 Pročež Chanun vzav služebníky Davidovy, oholil je a zustřihoval roucha jejich polovici až do rozkroků, a propustil je. 5 Tedy odešli někteří, a oznámili Davidovi o těch mužích. I poslal proti nim, (nebo byli muži ti zlehčeni velice), a rozkázal jim král: Pobuďte v Jerichu, dokudž neobrostou brady vaše; potom se navrátíte. 6 Vidouce pak Ammonitští, že se zošklivili Davidovi, poslal Chanun a synové Ammon tisíc hřiven stříbra, aby sobě najali ze mzdy z Mezopotamie a z Syrie Maacha a z Soba vozů a jezdců. 7 A najali sobě ze mzdy třidceti a dva tisíce vozů, a krále Maachu i lid jeho. Kteřížto přitáhše, položili se s vojskem naproti Medaba. Ammonitští také shromáždivše se z měst svých, přitáhli k té bitvě. 8 Což uslyšav David, poslal Joába se vším vojskem udatných. 9 A tak vytáhše Ammonitští, sšikovali se k boji u brány města toho. Králové pak, kteříž byli přitáhli, byli zvláště na poli. 10 A protož vida Joáb proti sobě sšikovaný lid z předu i z zadu, vybrav některé ze všech výborných Izraelských, sšikoval je také proti Syrským. 11 Ostatek pak lidu dal pod správu Abizaie bratra svého, a sšikovali se proti Ammonitským. 12 I řekl Joáb: Jestliže Syrští budou mne silnější, přispěješ mi na pomoc; pakli Ammonitští silnější budou tebe, já pomohu tobě. 13 Posiliž se, a zmužile se mějme, bojujíce za lid náš a za města Boha našeho, Hospodin však, což mu se dobře líbí, nechť učiní. 14 Takž přistoupil Joáb i lid, kterýž při něm byl, k bitvě proti Syrským. Ale oni utekli před ním. 15 V tom Ammonitští vidouce, že utíkají Syrští, utekli také i oni před Abizaiem bratrem jeho, a ušli do města. Joáb též navrátil se do Jeruzaléma. 16 A tak vidouce Syrští, že jsou poraženi od Izraelských, poslali posly, a vyvedli Syrské, kteříž bydlejí za řekou, a Sofach kníže vojska Hadarezerova vedl je. 17 I oznámeno to Davidovi. Kterýžto shromáždiv všecken lid Izraelský, přepravil se přes Jordán, a přitáhl k nim, a sšikoval vojsko proti nim. A když sšikoval David vojsko proti Syrským k bitvě, bojovali s ním. 18 Tedy utekli Syrští před Izraelem. I porazil David z Syrských sedm tisíc vozů, a čtyřidceti tisíc lidu pěšího, až i Sofacha hejtmana vojska toho zabil. 19 Pročež když viděli služebníci Hadarezerovi, že jsou poraženi od Izraele, vešli v pokoj s Davidem, a sloužili jemu. A nechtěli více Syrští táhnouti na pomoc Ammonitským.

Nepřišli k tobě jeho služebníci spíše proto, aby prozkoumali a rozvrátili zemi?“ 4 Chanún dal tedy Davidovy služebníky oholit, dal uříznout jejich roucho do poloviny, až do rozkroku, a tak je propustil. 5 I šli. Když to o těch mužích oznámili Davidovi, poslal jim naproti, protože ti muži byli velice zhanobeni. Král nařídil: „Zůstaňte v Jerichu, dokud vám brady neobrostou; pak se vrátíte.“ 6 Amónovci viděli, že zavinili Davidovu nelibost. Proto Chanún s Amónovci poslal tisíc talentů stříbra, aby si najali koně k vozům a jezdce od Aramejců z Dvojříčí, Aramejců z Maaky a ze Sóby. 7 Najali si třicet dva tisíce koní k vozům od krále z Maaky a jeho lid. Ti přitáhli a utábořili se proti Médebě. Také Amónovci se shromáždili ze svých měst a přitáhli do boje. 8 Když to David uslyšel, poslal Jóaba s celým vojem bohatýrů. 9 Amónovci vytáhli a seřadili se k boji u vchodu do města. Králové, kteří přitáhli, stáli stranou v poli. 10 Když Jóab spatřil, že má proti sobě bitevní řady vpředu i vzadu, vybral si nejlepší ze všech izraelských mladíků a seřadil je proti Aramejcům. 11 Zbytek lidu podřídil svému bratru Abšajovi. I seřadili se proti Amónovcům. 12 Řekl: „Budou-li mít Aramejci nade mnou převahu, přijdeš mi na pomoc. Budou-li mít Amónovci převahu nad tebou, přijdu ti na pomoc já. 13 Buď rozhodný! Vzchopme se! Za náš lid, za města našeho Boha! Hospodin nechť učiní, co uzná za dobré.“ 14 Jóab a lid, který byl s ním, se dali do boje proti Aramejcům; ti před ním utekli. 15 Když Amónovci viděli, že Aramejci utíkají, utekli také oni před jeho bratrem Abšajem a vešli do města. Jóab pak přišel do Jeruzaléma. 16 Když Aramejci viděli, že jsou Izraelem poraženi, poslali posly, aby přivedli Aramejce, kteří byli za Řekou. V jejich čele byl Šófak, velitel Hadad-ezerova vojska. 17 Oznámili to Davidovi a on shromáždil celý Izrael, překročil Jordán, přitáhl k nim a seřadil se proti nim. David se seřadil k boji proti Aramejcům a ti s ním bojovali. 18 Aramejci se však dali před Izraelem na útěk. David pobil koně od sedmi tisíc aramejských vozů a čtyřicet tisíc pěšáků, usmrtil též Šófaka, velitele vojska. 19 Když Hadad-ezerovi služebníci viděli, že jsou Izraelem poraženi, uzavřeli s Davidem příměří a sloužili mu. Aramejci pak už nikdy nechtěli jít Amónovcům na pomoc.

Porážka Amonců a Aramejců

Pak se můžete vrátit.“ 6 Amonci si uvědomili, jak moc Davida popudili, a tak společně s Chanunem poslali tisíc talentů^[1] stříbra a najali si vozy a jezdce z mezopotamského Aramu, z Maaky a z Cóby. 7 Najali si dvaatřicet tisíc vozů a k tomu i maackého krále, který se svým vojskem přitáhl a utábořil se před Medebou. Také Amonci se shromáždili ze svých měst a vytáhli do boje. 8 Když se to David dozvěděl, vyslal tam Joába se všemi nejlepšími bojovníky. 9 Amonci vyrazili a sešikovali se k boji u městské brány, zatímco králové, kteří přišli s nimi, zaujali postavení v poli. 10 Joáb viděl, že musí čelit boji zepředu i zezadu, a tak vybral ty nejlepší z izraelských bojovníků, aby nastoupili proti Aramejcům. 11 Zbytek vojska svěřil pod velení svého bratra Abišaje, aby nastoupili proti Amoncům. 12 Joáb mu řekl: „Budou-li Aramejci nad mé síly, přijdeš mi na pomoc. Budou-li Amonci nad tvé síly, pomohu já tobě. 13 Buď silný! Odvahu! Za náš lid a za města našeho Boha! Ať Hospodin učiní, co se mu zlíbí.“ 14 Nato se Joáb se svým vojskem pustil do boje s Aramejci a ti se před nimi dali na útěk. 15 Jakmile Amonci uviděli, že Aramejci utekli, dali se i oni na útěk před Joábovým bratrem Abišajem a stáhli se do města. Joáb se pak vrátil do Jeruzaléma. 16 Aramejci viděli, že je Izrael porazil, a tak vyslali posly a přivedli si také Aramejce z druhého břehu Eufratu. V jejich čele stál Hadad-ezerův vojevůdce Šofach. 17 Když se to David dozvěděl, shromáždil celý Izrael, překročil Jordán, přitáhl k nim a sešikoval vojsko proti nim. Jakmile David sešikoval vojsko, pustili se s ním Aramejci do boje. 18 Museli se ale před Izraelem dát na útěk. David mezi Aramejci pobil 7000 jezdců a 40 000 pěšáků. Zabil i jejich vojevůdce Šofacha. 19 Když Hadad-ezerovi vazalové viděli, že je Izrael porazil, uzavřeli s Davidem mír a poddali se mu. Aramejci pak už nikdy nechtěli přijít Amoncům na pomoc.

Als die Diener Davids in das Land der Ammoniter kamen, um Hanun das Beileid auszusprechen, (1S 11,1) 3 sagten die Fürsten der Ammoniter zu Hanun: Will David wirklich deinen Vater vor deinen Augen ehren, weil er Leute schickt, die dir sein Beileid aussprechen sollen? Sind seine Diener nicht viel eher zu dir gekommen, um das Land auszukundschaften, in Aufruhr zu versetzen und auszuspionieren? (Jz 2,2) 4 Darauf ließ Hanun die Diener Davids festnehmen, scheren und ihnen die Kleider zur Hälfte abschneiden, bis zum Gesäß herauf. So schickte er sie weg. 5 Sie zogen fort, und als man David meldete, was mit den Männern geschehen war, schickte er ihnen jemand entgegen und ließ ihnen, weil sie so schwer geschändet waren, sagen: Bleibt in Jericho und kehrt erst zurück, wenn euer Bart wieder gewachsen ist! 6 Als die Ammoniter merkten, dass sie sich bei David verhasst gemacht hatten, schickten Hanun und die Ammoniter tausend Talente Silber, um in Mesopotamien, Aram-Maacha und Zoba Wagenkämpfer samt Wagen anzuwerben. (Gn 34,30) 7 Sie warben zweiunddreißigtausend Kriegswagen an und gewannen den König von Maacha mit seinen Kriegsleuten. Diese zogen heran und lagerten vor Medeba. Auch die Ammoniter sammelten sich aus ihren Städten und zogen in den Kampf. 8 David erfuhr davon und schickte Joab mit dem ganzen Heer, allen kriegstüchtigen Männern, hin. (1Pa 2,16) 9 Die Ammoniter rückten aus und stellten sich vor der Stadt zum Kampf auf, während die Könige, die gekommen waren, jeweils für sich draußen auf dem freien Feld standen. 10 Als Joab sah, dass ihm ein Angriff von vorn und von hinten drohte, traf er eine Auswahl aus der Kerntruppe Israels und stellte sie gegen die Aramäer auf. 11 Den Rest des Heeres unterstellte er seinem Bruder Abischai, damit sie sich den Ammonitern gegenüber aufstellten. (1Pa 11,20) 12 Joab sagte: Wenn die Aramäer stärker sind als ich, dann komm du mir zu Hilfe! Wenn die Ammoniter stärker sind als du, dann werde ich dir zu Hilfe kommen. 13 Sei tapfer! Wir wollen mutig für unser Volk und für die Städte unseres Gottes kämpfen. Der HERR aber möge tun, was er für recht hält. 14 Dann griff Joab mit seinen Leuten die Aramäer an und diese ergriffen die Flucht vor ihm. 15 Als die Ammoniter sahen, dass die Aramäer flohen, ergriffen sie ebenfalls die Flucht vor seinem Bruder Abischai und zogen sich in die Stadt zurück. Joab kehrte heim nach Jerusalem. 16 Die Aramäer sahen, dass sie von Israel geschlagen waren. Sie schickten Boten und ließen die Aramäer, die diesseits des Stromes wohnten, ausrücken; an ihrer Spitze stand Schobach, der Oberbefehlshaber Hadad-Esers. 17 Als man das David meldete, versammelte er ganz Israel, überschritt den Jordan, zog gegen sie und nahm ihnen gegenüber Aufstellung. Während er sich den Aramäern gegenüber zum Kampf aufstellte, eröffneten sie den Kampf. (2S 8,3; 1Pa 18,8) 18 Doch sie mussten vor den Israeliten fliehen. David vernichtete siebentausend aramäische Kriegswagen und tötete vierzigtausend Mann von ihren Fußtruppen. Auch Schobach, den Oberbefehlshaber des Heeres, tötete er. 19 Die Vasallen Hadad-Esers sahen nun ein, dass sie von den Israeliten besiegt waren. Sie schlossen Frieden mit David und unterwarfen sich ihm. Von da an hatten die Aramäer kein Verlangen mehr, den Ammonitern zu helfen.

The Ammonites Disgrace David’s Men

1 Now after this Nahash the king of the Ammonites died, and his son reigned in his place. (2S 10,1) 2 And David said, “I will deal kindly with Hanun the son of Nahash, for his father dealt kindly with me.” So David sent messengers to console him concerning his father. And David’s servants came to the land of the Ammonites to Hanun to console him. 3 But the princes of the Ammonites said to Hanun, “Do you think, because David has sent comforters to you, that he is honoring your father? Have not his servants come to you to search and to overthrow and to spy out the land?” 4 So Hanun took David’s servants and shaved them and cut off their garments in the middle, at their hips, and sent them away; 5 and they departed. When David was told concerning the men, he sent messengers to meet them, for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, “Remain at Jericho until your beards have grown and then return.” 6 When the Ammonites saw that they had become a stench to David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent 1,000 talents^[1] of silver to hire chariots and horsemen from Mesopotamia, from Aram-maacah, and from Zobah. (2S 10,6; 1Pa 18,5; 1Pa 18,9) 7 They hired 32,000 chariots and the king of Maacah with his army, who came and encamped before Medeba. And the Ammonites were mustered from their cities and came to battle. (Nu 21,30; Jz 13,9; Jz 13,16) 8 When David heard of it, he sent Joab and all the army of the mighty men. 9 And the Ammonites came out and drew up in battle array at the entrance of the city, and the kings who had come were by themselves in the open country.

Ammonites and Syrians Defeated

10 When Joab saw that the battle was set against him both in front and in the rear, he chose some of the best men of Israel and arrayed them against the Syrians. 11 The rest of his men he put in the charge of Abishai his brother, and they were arrayed against the Ammonites. (1Pa 18,12) 12 And he said, “If the Syrians are too strong for me, then you shall help me, but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will help you. 13 Be strong, and let us use our strength for our people and for the cities of our God, and may the Lord do what seems good to him.” 14 So Joab and the people who were with him drew near before the Syrians for battle, and they fled before him. 15 And when the Ammonites saw that the Syrians fled, they likewise fled before Abishai, Joab’s brother, and entered the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem. (1Pa 19,11) 16 But when the Syrians saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers and brought out the Syrians who were beyond the Euphrates,^[2] with Shophach the commander of the army of Hadadezer at their head. (2S 10,16; 2S 10,18) 17 And when it was told to David, he gathered all Israel together and crossed the Jordan and came to them and drew up his forces against them. And when David set the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him. 18 And the Syrians fled before Israel, and David killed of the Syrians the men of 7,000 chariots and 40,000 foot soldiers, and put to death also Shophach the commander of their army. (2S 10,18; 1Pa 19,16) 19 And when the servants of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle. 8 And when David heard of it , he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men. 9 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field. 10 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians. 11 And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon. 12 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee. 13 Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight. 14 So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him. 15 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem. 16 And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them. 17 And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him. 18 But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host. 19 And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.
