1Voici ce que l’Eternel dit à Jérémie lorsqu’il s’adressa à lui après que Nebouzaradân, le chef de la garde, l’eut renvoyé à Rama. Celui-ci l’avait en effet trouvé enchaîné au milieu de tous les captifs de Jérusalem et de Juda que l’on déportait à Babylone[1]. (Jr 39:14)2Le chef de la garde l’avait donc fait retirer du convoi et lui avait dit: L’Eternel ton Dieu avait annoncé que ce malheur viendrait sur ce lieu,3et maintenant il l’a fait venir et a réalisé ainsi ce qu’il avait annoncé. Cela vous est arrivé parce que vous vous êtes rendus coupables envers l’Eternel, et que vous ne lui avez pas obéi.4Maintenant, vois, je détache aujourd’hui les chaînes de tes poignets. Si tu le juges bon, viens avec moi à Babylone, et je prendrai soin de toi. Mais si tu préfères ne pas me suivre à Babylone, reste ici. Vois: tout le pays est devant toi; va où bon te semblera et où il te conviendra d’aller.5Comme Jérémie hésitait à répondre[2], Nebouzaradân lui dit: Retourne auprès de Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam, et petit-fils de Shaphân, à qui le roi de Babylone a confié la responsabilité des villes de Juda, et demeure avec lui au milieu du peuple, ou bien va où bon te semblera. Puis le chef de la garde lui donna des vivres, lui offrit un présent et prit congé de lui.6Jérémie se rendit donc auprès de Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam, à Mitspa[3], et il demeura avec lui parmi le peuple qui avait été laissé dans le pays. (1S 7:16; 1S 10:17; 1R 15:22)
Les Judéens dispersés reviennent dans leur pays
7Lorsque tous les chefs de l’armée, qui s’étaient dispersés dans la campagne, et leurs hommes apprirent que le roi de Babylone avait nommé Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam, comme gouverneur du pays, et qu’il lui avait confié les hommes, les femmes et les enfants, et les gens pauvres du pays qui n’avaient pas été déportés à Babylone[4], (2R 25:22; Jr 41:8)8ils allèrent trouver Guedalia à Mitspa. C’étaient Ismaël, fils de Netania, Yohanân et Jonathan, fils de Qaréah, Seraya, fils de Tanhoumeth, les fils d’Ephaï de Netopha et Yezania, fils d’un Maakathien[5]. Ils vinrent, accompagnés de leurs hommes. (Dt 3:14; Jos 12:5; 1Ch 2:54; Esd 2:22)9Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam, petit-fils de Shaphân, leur déclara avec serment, à eux et à leurs hommes: Vous n’avez rien à craindre en vous soumettant aux Chaldéens; installez-vous dans le pays, soumettez-vous au roi de Babylone et tout ira bien pour vous.10Moi, je vais m’installer à Mitspa pour vous représenter auprès des Chaldéens lorsqu’ils viendront nous trouver. Mais vous autres, faites les récoltes de vin, des fruits d’été et d’huile[6], et faites-en provision. Installez-vous dans les villes que vous occupez. (Jr 39:9; Jr 52:12)11Tous les autres Judéens, qui s’étaient réfugiés dans le pays de Moab, chez les Ammonites, en Edom et dans tous les autres pays d’alentour, apprirent aussi que le roi de Babylone avait laissé un reste de la population dans le territoire de Juda et qu’il avait établi sur eux comme gouverneur Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam et petit-fils de Shaphân.12Alors tous les Judéens revinrent de tous les lieux où ils avaient été dispersés; ils revinrent en Juda et se rendirent auprès de Guedalia à Mitspa. Ils firent une abondante récolte de vin et des fruits d’été.
L’assassinat du gouverneur
13Yohanân, fils de Qaréah, et tous les chefs de l’armée qui se trouvaient dans la campagne, vinrent trouver Guedalia à Mitspa14et lui dirent: Ne sais-tu donc pas que Baalis, le roi des Ammonites, a chargé Ismaël, fils de Netania, de t’assassiner[7]? Mais Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam, ne voulut pas les croire. (Jr 41:1)15Yohanân, fils de Qaréah, dit même en secret à Guedalia, à Mitspa: Laisse-moi aller tuer Ismaël, fils de Netania! Personne ne le saura. Pourquoi le laisser t’assassiner? Pourquoi faudrait-il que tous les Juifs qui se sont regroupés autour de toi soient dispersés et que ce qui reste de Juda périsse?16Mais Guedalia, fils d’Ahiqam, répondit à Yohanân, fils de Qaréah: Ne fais pas une chose pareille, car ce que tu racontes au sujet d’Ismaël est faux.

(Jr 40:6; Jr 40:13; Jr 40:14; Jr 40:15; Jr 40:16; Jr 41:1; Jr 42:1; Jr 42:8)9Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, swore to them and their men, saying, “Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you. (Jr 38:20)10As for me, I will dwell at Mizpah, to represent you before the Chaldeans who will come to us. And they gathered wine and summer fruits in great abundance. (Jr 40:10; Jr 43:5)13Now Johanan the son of Kareah and all the leaders of the forces in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah (Jr 40:8; Jr 40:15; Jr 41:11; Jr 42:1; Jr 42:8)14and said to him, “Do you know that Baalis the king of the Ammonites has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take your life?” But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam would not believe them. (Jr 41:10)15Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke secretly to Gedaliah at Mizpah, “Please let me go and strike down Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no one will know it. Why should he take your life, so that all the Judeans who are gathered about you would be scattered, and the remnant of Judah would perish?” (Jr 42:2)16But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, “You shall not do this thing, for you are speaking falsely of Ishmael.”

Sieh: Das ganze Land liegt vor dir; geh, wohin zu gehen in deinen Augen gut und recht ist!5Als er aber noch nicht zurückkehren wollte, sagte er weiter: Kehre zurück zu Gedalja, dem Sohn Ahikams, des Sohnes Schafans, den der König von Babel über die Städte Judas gesetzt hat! Bleib bei ihm mitten unter dem Volk oder geh, wohin zu gehen in deinen Augen recht ist! Der Befehlshaber der Leibwache gab ihm Reisevorrat sowie ein Geschenk und entließ ihn.6Jeremia ging zu Gedalja, dem Sohn Ahikams, nach Mizpa und blieb bei ihm mitten unter dem Volk, das im Land übrig geblieben war. (Jr 39:14)7Alle Truppenführer, die im Feld waren, sie und ihre Männer, hörten, dass der König von Babel Gedalja, den Sohn Ahikams, als Statthalter im Land eingesetzt und ihm Männer, Frauen und Kinder sowie jenen Teil der armen Bevölkerung unterstellt habe, der nicht nach Babel geführt worden war. (2R 25:22)8Und es kamen zu Gedalja nach Mizpa: Jischmael, der Sohn Netanjas, Johanan und Jonatan, die Söhne Kareachs, Seraja, der Sohn Tanhumets, ferner die Söhne Efais aus Netofa und Jaasanja, der Sohn des Maachatiters, sie und ihre Männer.9Gedalja, der Sohn Ahikams, des Sohnes Schafans, schwor ihnen und ihren Männern: Fürchtet euch nicht davor, den Chaldäern untertan zu sein! Bleibt im Land und dient dem König von Babel; dann wird es euch gut gehen!10Ich aber, siehe, ich bleibe in Mizpa und vertrete euch vor den Chaldäern, die zu uns kommen. Ihr aber, erntet Wein, Obst und Öl, sammelt es in euren Gefäßen und bleibt in den Ortschaften, die ihr in Besitz genommen habt!11Auch alle Judäer, die sich in Moab, bei den Ammonitern, in Edom oder in allen anderen Ländern aufhielten, hörten, dass der König von Babel Juda eine Restbevölkerung gelassen und über sie Gedalja, den Sohn Ahikams, des Sohnes Schafans, als Statthalter eingesetzt habe.12Und alle Judäer kehrten aus allen Orten, wohin sie versprengt waren, zurück und kamen ins Land Juda zu Gedalja nach Mizpa und sie ernteten Wein und Obst in großer Menge.13Auch Johanan, der Sohn Kareachs, und alle Truppenführer, die im Feld waren, kamen zu Gedalja nach Mizpa.14Sie fragten ihn: Weißt du schon, dass Baalis, der König der Ammoniter, Jischmael, den Sohn Netanjas, geschickt hat, um dich ermorden zu lassen? Aber Gedalja, der Sohn Ahikams, glaubte ihnen nicht.15Nun sagte Johanan, der Sohn Kareachs, heimlich zu Gedalja in Mizpa: Ich will hingehen und Jischmael, den Sohn Netanjas, erschlagen, ohne dass jemand davon erfährt. Warum soll er dich umbringen, sodass alle Judäer, die sich um dich geschart haben, wieder zerstreut werden und der Rest von Juda zugrunde geht?16Doch Gedalja, der Sohn Ahikams, entgegnete Johanan, dem Sohn Kareachs: Tu das nicht; denn du redest falsch über Jischmael.
