Volal jsem vás, ale nepřišli jste mi proti nim na pomoc.3Když jsem viděl, že mi nepomůžete, nasadil jsem vlastní život, vytáhl jsem proti Amoncům a Hospodin mi je vydal do rukou. Proč jste dnes za mnou přišli? Bojovat se mnou?“4Jiftach tedy shromáždil všechny gileádské muže a pustil se do boje proti Efraimovi. Gileádští muži na ně udeřili, protože Efraimci říkali: „Vy Gileáďané jste jen uprchlíci z Efraima – uprostřed Efraima a Manasese!“5Gileáďané tehdy Efraimcům obsadili jordánské brody, a kdykoli někdo z efraimských uprchlíků žádal: „Nechte mě přejít,“ Gileáďané se ho ptali: „Nejsi Efraimec?“ Když odpověděl: „Nejsem,“6vyzvali ho: „Tak řekni: Šibolet.“ Když ale řekl: Sibolet (protože to neuměl vyslovit správně), popadli ho a zamordovali. Tenkrát u těch jordánských brodů padlo 42 000 Efraimců.7Jiftach soudil Izrael šest let. Když Jiftach Gileádský zemřel, byl pohřben ve svém městě v Gileádu.
Ibcan
8Po něm byl v Izraeli soudcem Ibcan z Betléma.9Měl třicet synů a třicet dcer. Ty provdal jinam a svým synům přivedl třicet dívek odjinud. Soudil Izrael sedm let.10Když Ibcan zemřel, byl pohřben v Betlémě.
Elon
11Po něm byl v Izraeli soudcem Elon Zabulonský. Ten soudil Izrael deset let.12Když Elon Zabulonský zemřel, byl pohřben v Ajalonu v zabulonském kraji.
Abdon
13Po něm byl v Izraeli soudcem Abdon, syn Hilela Piratonského.14Ten měl čtyřicet synů a třicet vnuků, kteří jezdili na sedmdesáti oslech. Soudil Izrael osm let.15Když Abdon, syn Hilela Piratonského, zemřel, byl pohřben v Piratonu v efraimském kraji na Amalekově pohoří.

And the men of Gilead struck Ephraim, because they said, “You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of Ephraim and Manasseh.” (1S 25,10)5And the Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And when any of the fugitives of Ephraim said, “Let me go over,” the men of Gilead said to him, “Are you an Ephraimite?” When he said, “No,” (Sd 3,28)6they said to him, “Then say Shibboleth,” and he said, “Sibboleth,” for he could not pronounce it right. Then they seized him and slaughtered him at the fords of the Jordan. At that time 42,000 of the Ephraimites fell. (Sd 12,5)7Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in his city in Gilead.[1]
Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon
8After him Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.9He had thirty sons, and thirty daughters he gave in marriage outside his clan, and thirty daughters he brought in from outside for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.10Then Ibzan died and was buried at Bethlehem.11After him Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel, and he judged Israel ten years.12Then Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the land of Zebulun.13After him Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite judged Israel.14He had forty sons and thirty grandsons, who rode on seventy donkeys, and he judged Israel eight years. (Sd 5,10; Jb 18,19; Iz 14,22; 1Tm 5,4)15Then Abdon the son of Hillel the Pirathonite died and was buried at Pirathon in the land of Ephraim, in the hill country of the Amalekites.
