1Staršího muže nehubuj, ale domlouvej mu jako otci, mladším jako bratrům,2starším ženám jako matkám, mladším jako sestrám, ve vší čistotě.3Prokazuj úctu osamělým vdovám.4Pokud má vdova děti nebo vnuky, musejí se učit prokazovat zbožnost především vůči vlastní rodině a oplácet péči svým rodičům. Tak se to Bohu líbí.5Skutečně opuštěná vdova spoléhá na Boha a dnem i nocí setrvává v prosbách a modlitbách.6Ta, která si užívá, je ale mrtvá zaživa.7Tyto věci jim klaď na srdce, ať jsou bezúhonné.8Kdo se nestará o své blízké, a zvláště o vlastní rodinu, zapřel víru a je horší než nevěřící.9Mezi vdovy v péči církve ať je zahrnuta nejméně šedesátiletá, pokud byla věrnou manželkou,[1]10je známá dobrými skutky, vychovala děti, přijímala hosty, myla nohy svatým, pomáhala souženým a věnovala se každému dobrému dílu.11Mladší vdovy ale započítat odmítej. Když je smyslnost odvede od Krista, budou se chtít vdát12a trestuhodně poruší svůj původní slib věrnosti.13Také by se učily marnit čas chozením po domech; a nejen marnit čas, ale klevetit, plést se do cizích věcí a říkat, co se nepatří.14Proto bych rád, aby se mladší vdovy vdávaly, rodily děti, vedly domácnost a nedávaly nepříteli žádnou příležitost k pomluvám.15Některé se už totiž odvrátily za satanem.16Jestliže má někdo věřící v příbuzenstvu vdovy, ať se o ně stará. Církev tak nebude přetížena a bude se moci postarat o vdovy, které jsou osamělé.17Starší, kteří se dobře starají o církev, si zaslouží dvojnásobné uznání, zvláště ti, kdo mají namáhavou službu kázání a vyučování.18Písmo přece říká: „Mlátícímu dobytčeti nedávej náhubek,“[2] a jinde: „Dělník si zaslouží svou mzdu.“[3]19Obvinění proti staršímu nepřijímej, jedině když s ním přijdou dva nebo tři svědkové.[4]20Ty, kteří hřeší, kárej přede všemi, aby i ostatní měli bázeň.21Zapřísahám tě před Bohem, před Kristem Ježíšem i vyvolenými anděly, abys tyto věci dodržoval bez předsudků a nikdy se nechoval předpojatě.22Na nikoho nevkládej ruce ukvapeně a neměj účast na cizích hříších; zachovávej si čistotu.23Nepij už samotnou vodu, ale s ohledem na svůj žaludek a své časté nemoci užívej trochu vína.24Hříchy některých lidí jsou zjevné, ještě než přijde soud; hříchy jiných ale až potom.25Stejně tak i dobré skutky; některé jsou zjevné a ty ostatní nezůstanou skryty.

(Ga 6,10; 2Tm 3,5; Tt 1,16; 2P 2,1; Zj 2,13; Zj 3,8)9Let a widow be enrolled if she is not less than sixty years of age, having been the wife of one husband,[1] (1Tm 3,2)10and having a reputation for good works: if she has brought up children, has shown hospitality, has washed the feet of the saints, has cared for the afflicted, and has devoted herself to every good work. (Gn 18,4; 1Tm 5,9; 1Tm 5,16; 1Tm 6,18)11But refuse to enroll younger widows, for when their passions draw them away from Christ, they desire to marry (Zj 18,3; Zj 18,7; Zj 18,9)12and so incur condemnation for having abandoned their former faith.13Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not. (2Te 3,11; 1P 4,15; 3J 1,10)14So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their households, and give the adversary no occasion for slander. (1K 7,9; 1Tm 6,1; Tt 2,5; Tt 2,8)15For some have already strayed after Satan. (1Tm 1,20)16If any believing woman has relatives who are widows, let her care for them. Let the church not be burdened, so that it may care for those who are truly widows. (1Tm 5,3; 1Tm 5,5)17Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.
