1Je pravda, že kdo chce spravovat církev, má zájem o krásnou práci.2Správce však musí být bezúhonný: věrný manžel,[1] střídmý, rozvážný, pořádný, pohostinný a schopný učit.3Nesmí to být opilec ani hrubián, ale vlídný, snášenlivý a nezištný člověk,4který se dobře stará o rodinu a má poslušné a dobře vychované děti.5(Když se někdo neumí postarat o vlastní rodinu, jak by mohl pečovat o Boží církev?)6Nesmí to být nováček, aby nadut pýchou neupadl do ďáblova odsouzení.7Musí mít dobrou pověst i mimo církev, aby neupadl do pomluv a do ďáblovy pasti.8Diakoni[2] v církvi ať jsou právě tak ušlechtilí: žádní pokrytci, opilci nebo prospěcháři,9ale lidé, jejichž tajemství víry je v čistém svědomí.10Ať jsou také nejdříve vyzkoušeni, a když se osvědčí, ať potom slouží.11Jejich ženy[3] ať jsou právě tak ušlechtilé, ne klevetivé, ale střídmé a naprosto věrné.12Diakoni musí být věrní manželé, kteří se dobře starají o své děti a rodiny.13Ti, kdo se ve službě osvědčí, totiž získávají dobré postavení a významný hlas, pokud jde o víru v Krista Ježíše.
Tajemství zbožnosti
14Tyto věci ti píšu v naději, že k tobě brzy přijdu.15Kdybych se ale zdržel, chci, abys věděl, jak je třeba si počínat v Božím domě, což je církev živého Boha, pilíř a základna pravdy.16Tajemství zbožnosti je bezesporu veliké: On[4] byl zjeven v těle, ospravedlněn v Duchu, ukázán andělům, zvěstován pohanům, vírou přijat ve světě a vyzvednut do slávy.

Qualifications for Deacons
8Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued,[3] not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. (Fp 1,1; 1Tm 5,23; Tt 1,7; Tt 2,3; 1P 5,2)9They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. (Sk 23,1; 1Tm 1,19)10And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. (1Tm 5,22)11Their wives likewise[4] must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things. (Tt 2,3; Tt 2,10)12Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. (1Tm 3,2; 1Tm 3,4)13For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. (Mt 25,21)
The Mystery of Godliness
14I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that,15if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.16Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He[5] was manifested in the flesh, vindicated[6] by the Spirit,[7] seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
