Matthäus 4

Jesus chooses his first disciples

18  One day Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee. There he saw two brothers, Simon Peter and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the lake, because they were fishermen.

19  ‘Come and follow me,’ Jesus said. ‘I will send you out to fish for people.’

20  At once they left their nets and followed him.

21  Going on from there, he saw two other brothers. They were James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee. As they were preparing their nets, Jesus called out to them.

22  Right away they left the boat and their father and followed Jesus.

Markus 1

Jesus chooses his first disciples

16  One day Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee. There he saw Simon and his brother Andrew. They were throwing a net into the lake. They were fishermen.

17  ‘Come and follow me,’ Jesus said. ‘I will send you out to fish for people.’

18  At once they left their nets and followed him.

19  Then Jesus walked a little further. As he did, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat preparing their nets.

20  Right away he called out to them. They left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men. Then they followed Jesus.

Lukas 5

Jesus chooses his first disciples

1  One day Jesus was standing by the Sea of Galilee. The people crowded around him and listened to the word of God.

2  Jesus saw two boats at the edge of the water. They had been left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.

3  He got into the boat that belonged to Simon. Jesus asked him to go out a little way from shore. Then he sat down in the boat and taught the people.

4  When he finished speaking, he turned to Simon. Jesus said, ‘Go out into deep water. Let down the nets so you can catch some fish.’

5  Simon answered, ‘Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.’

6  When they had done so, they caught a large number of fish. There were so many that their nets began to break.

7  So they motioned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

8  When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees. ‘Go away from me, Lord!’ he said. ‘I am a sinful man!’

9  He and everyone with him were amazed at the number of fish they had caught.

10  So were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who worked with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, ‘Don’t be afraid. From now on you will fish for people.’

11  So they pulled their boats up on shore. Then they left everything and followed him.

Johannes 1

John’s disciples follow Jesus

35  The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.

36  He saw Jesus walking by. John said, ‘Look! The Lamb of God!’

37  The two disciples heard him say this. So they followed Jesus.

38  Then Jesus turned round and saw them following. He asked, ‘What do you want?’ They said, ‘Rabbi, where are you staying?’ Rabbi means Teacher.

39  ‘Come’, he replied. ‘You will see.’ So they went and saw where he was staying. They spent the rest of the day with him. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon.

40  Andrew was Simon Peter’s brother. Andrew was one of the two disciples who heard what John had said. He had also followed Jesus.

41  The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon. He told him, ‘We have found the Messiah.’ Messiah means Christ.

42  And he brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas.’ Cephas means Peter, or Rock.

Jesus chooses Philip and Nathanael

43  The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, ‘Follow me.’

44  Philip was from the town of Bethsaida. So were Andrew and Peter.

45  Philip found Nathanael and told him, ‘We have found the one whom Moses wrote about in the Law. The prophets also wrote about him. He is Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.’

46  ‘Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?’ Nathanael asked. ‘Come and see,’ said Philip.

47  Jesus saw Nathanael approaching. Here is what Jesus said about him. ‘He is a true Israelite. Nothing about him is false.’

48  ‘How do you know me?’ Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, ‘I saw you while you were still under the fig tree. I saw you there before Philip called you.’

49  Nathanael replied, ‘Rabbi, you are the Son of God. You are the king of Israel.’

50  Jesus said, ‘You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.’

51  Then he said to the disciples, ‘What I’m about to tell you is true. You will see heaven open. You will see the angels of God going up and coming down on the Son of Man.’
