24 When John’s messengers had gone, Jesus[1] began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? (Lu 1:80; Lu 3:2; Eph 4:14; Jas 1:6)

24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 

New International Reader’s Version

24 So John’s messengers left. Then Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John. He said, ‘What did you go out into the desert to see? Tall grass waving in the wind? 

King James Version

24 And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
