56 Then they returned and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment. (Ex 20:10; De 5:14; Mr 16:1; Lu 24:1; Joh 19:39) 

New International Version

56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment. 

New International Reader’s Version

56 Then they went home. There they prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath day in order to obey the Law. 

King James Version

56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.
