English Standard Version

23 He said, “I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight[1] the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” (Isa 40:3; Mt 3:3) 

New International Version

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, ‘I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Make straight the way for the Lord.” ’ (Isa 40:3) 

New International Reader’s Version

23 John replied, using the words of Isaiah the prophet. John said, ‘I’m the messenger who is calling out in the desert, “Make the way for the Lord straight.” ’ (Isa 40:3) 

King James Version

23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.
