Ezra 4:14

English Standard Version

14 Now because we eat the salt of the palace[1] and it is not fitting for us to witness the king’s dishonor, therefore we send and inform the king, 

New International Version

14 Now since we are under obligation to the palace and it is not proper for us to see the king dishonoured, we are sending this message to inform the king, 

New International Reader’s Version

14 We owe a lot to you. We don’t want to see dishonour brought on you. So we’re sending this letter to tell you what is going on. 

King James Version

14 Now because we have maintenance from the king' palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king' dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;
