7 And he called the name of the place Massah[1] and Meribah,[2] because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?” (Nu 20:13; Ps 81:7; Ps 95:8) 

New International Version

7 And he called the place Massah[1] and Meribah[2] because the Israelites quarrelled and because they tested the Lord saying, ‘Is the Lord among us or not?’ 

New International Reader’s Version

7 Moses called the place Massah and Meribah. That’s because the people of Israel argued with him there. They also tested the LORD. They asked, ‘Is the LORD among us or not?’ 

King James Version

7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?
