21 And David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince[1] over Israel, the people of the Lord—and I will celebrate before the Lord. (1Sa 13:14; 1Sa 15:28) 

New International Version

21 David said to Michal, ‘It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel – I will celebrate before the Lord. 

New International Reader’s Version

21 David said to Michal, ‘I did it to honour the LORD. He chose me instead of your father or anyone else in Saul’s family. The LORD appointed me ruler over his people Israel. I will celebrate to honour the LORD. 

King James Version

21 And David said unto Michal, It was before the LORD, which chose me before thy father, and before all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel: therefore will I play before the LORD.
