20 And so it happened to him, for the people trampled him in the gate and he died. 

New International Version

20 And that is exactly what happened to him, for the people trampled him in the gateway, and he died. 

New International Reader’s Version

20 And that’s exactly what happened to the officer. On their way out of the city, the people knocked him down. In the entrance of the gate he was crushed as they walked on top of him. And so he died. 

King James Version

20 And so it fell out unto him: for the people trode upon him in the gate, and he died.
