2 Corinthians 9:5

English Standard Version

5 So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange in advance for the gift[1] you have promised, so that it may be ready as a willing gift, not as an exaction.[2] (Ge 33:11; Jud 1:15; 1Sa 25:27; 2Co 12:17; Php 4:17)

New International Version

5 So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to visit you in advance and finish the arrangements for the generous gift you had promised. Then it will be ready as a generous gift, not as one grudgingly given.

New International Reader’s Version

5 So I thought I should try to get the brothers to visit you in advance. They will finish the plans for the large gift you had promised. Then it will be ready as a gift freely given. It will not be given by force.

King James Version

5 Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness.
