5 For we never came with words of flattery,[1] as you know, nor with a pretext for greed—God is witness. (Ac 20:33; Ro 1:9; 1Th 2:10) 

New International Version

5 You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed – God is our witness. 

New International Reader’s Version

5 As you know, we never praised you if we didn’t mean it. We didn’t put on a mask to cover up any sinful desire. God is our witness that this is true.
