English Standard Version

28 Then one of the people said, “Your father strictly charged the people with an oath, saying, ‘Cursed be the man who eats food this day.’” And the people were faint. (Jud 8:4) 

New International Version

28 Then one of the soldiers told him, ‘Your father bound the army under a strict oath, saying, “Cursed be anyone who eats food today!” That is why the men are faint.’ 

New International Reader’s Version

28 Then one of the soldiers told him, ‘Your father forced the army to make a promise that everyone must obey. He said, “None of you must eat any food today. If you do, may you be under a curse!” That’s why the men are weak and ready to faint.’ 

King James Version

28 Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that eateth any food this day. And the people were faint.
