10 And Hosah, of the sons of Merari, had sons: Shimri the chief (for though he was not the firstborn, his father made him chief), (1Ch 16:38) 

New International Version

10 Hosah the Merarite had sons: Shimri the first (although he was not the firstborn, his father had appointed him the first), 

New International Reader’s Version

10 Hosah belonged to the family line of Merari. Hosah’s first son was Shimri. But Shimri wasn’t the eldest son. His father had made him the first. 

King James Version

10 Also Hosah, of the children of Merari, had sons; Simri the chief, (for though he was not the firstborn, yet his father made him the chief;)
