Ein Zeugnis- und Lehrgedicht von David, 2 als er mit den Syrern von Mesopotamien und denen von Zoba kämpfte, als Joab zurückkehrte und 12.000 Edomiter* im Salztal erschlug. 3 Gott, du hast uns verworfen, / unsere Reihen zerrissen. / Du warst zornig auf uns. / Richte uns doch wieder auf! 4 Du hast das Land erschüttert und gespalten. / Heile seine Risse, denn es wankt! 5 Du hast dein Volk hart geprüft, / tränktest uns mit betäubendem Wein. 6 Doch denen, die dich ehren, hast du ein Zeichen aufgestellt, / zu dem sie fliehen können vor dem Feind. ♪ 7 Greif ein mit deiner Macht, erhöre mich, / dass die gerettet werden, die du liebst! 8 Und das hat Gott in seiner Heiligkeit gesagt: / „Ich will jubeln über meinen Sieg! / Ich werde ‹das Land von› Sichem* verteilen / und messe Sukkots* Ebene aus. 9 Gilead* gehört mir, und auch Manasse* ist mein. / Der Helm auf meinem Kopf ist Efraïm,* / und Juda ist mein Herrscherstab. 10 Moab* muss mir als Waschschüssel dienen, / und auf Edom* werfe ich meinen Schuh. / Juble über mich, Philisterland!* 11 Wer wird mich zur Festungsstadt bringen, / wer mich nach Edom hinführen?“ 12 Wer außer dir, Gott, könnte das tun? / Doch du hast uns ja verworfen, / ziehst nicht mit unseren Heeren aus. 13 Bring uns doch Hilfe im Kampf mit dem Feind! / Menschenhilfe nützt uns nichts. 14 Mit Gott werden wir Großes vollbringen. / Er wird unsere Feinde zertreten.

He Will Tread Down Our Foes

1 To the choirmaster: according to Shushan Eduth. A Miktam* of David; for instruction; when he strove with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and when Joab on his return struck down twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt. O God, you have rejected us, broken our defenses; you have been angry; oh, restore us. 2 You have made the land to quake; you have torn it open; repair its breaches, for it totters. 3 You have made your people see hard things; you have given us wine to drink that made us stagger. 4 You have set up a banner for those who fear you, that they may flee to it from the bow.* 5 That your beloved ones may be delivered, give salvation by your right hand and answer us! 6 God has spoken in his holiness:* “With exultation I will divide up Shechem and portion out the Vale of Succoth. 7 Gilead is mine; Manasseh is mine; Ephraim is my helmet; Judah is my scepter. 8 Moab is my washbasin; upon Edom I cast my shoe; over Philistia I shout in triumph.”* 9 Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom? 10 Have you not rejected us, O God? You do not go forth, O God, with our armies. 11 Oh, grant us help against the foe, for vain is the salvation of man! 12 With God we shall do valiantly; it is he who will tread down our foes.
