1A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.2Rich and poor have this in common: The Lord is the Maker of them all.3The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.4Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honour and life.5In the paths of the wicked are snares and pitfalls, but those who would preserve their life stay far from them.6Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.7The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender.8Whoever sows injustice reaps calamity, and the rod they wield in fury will be broken.9The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor.10Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife; quarrels and insults are ended.11One who loves a pure heart and who speaks with grace will have the king for a friend.12The eyes of the Lord keep watch over knowledge, but he frustrates the words of the unfaithful.13The sluggard says, ‘There’s a lion outside! I’ll be killed in the public square!’14The mouth of an adulterous woman is a deep pit; a man who is under the Lord’s wrath falls into it.15Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far away.16One who oppresses the poor to increase his wealth and one who gives gifts to the rich – both come to poverty.
Saying 1
17Pay attention and turn your ear to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach,18for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips.19So that your trust may be in the Lord, I teach you today, even you.20Have I not written thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel and knowledge,21teaching you to be honest and to speak the truth, so that you bring back truthful reports to those you serve?

22Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court,23for the Lord will take up their case and will exact life for life.
Saying 3
24Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered,25or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared.

26Do not be one who shakes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts;27if you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you.28Do not move an ancient boundary stone set up by your ancestors.

1Bon renom vaut mieux que grandes richesses, et l’estime des autres est plus précieuse que l’or et l’argent.2Riche et pauvre ont ceci en commun: c’est l’Eternel qui les a faits l’un et l’autre.3L’homme avisé voit venir le malheur et se met à l’abri, l’homme sans expérience poursuit son chemin et en subira les conséquences.4Sois humble et crains l’Eternel, tu seras riche et honoré, et tu recevras la vie.5Le chemin des hommes corrompus est parsemé d’épines et de pièges, qui veut préserver sa vie s’en tiendra éloigné.6Apprends à l’enfant le chemin qu’il doit suivre*, même quand il sera vieux, il n’en déviera pas.7Le riche domine le pauvre, qui emprunte se met sous la coupe de son créancier.8Qui sème l’injustice moissonnera l’iniquité*, et son règne de terreur prendra fin.9L’homme qui regarde autrui avec bonté sera béni parce qu’il a partagé son pain avec le pauvre.10Chasse le moqueur, et la discorde prendra fin: les querelles et les insultes cesseront.11Qui aime les intentions pures et dont les paroles sont bienveillantes aura le roi pour ami.12L’Eternel veille à préserver la connaissance, mais il subvertit les propos du perfide.13Le paresseux dit: « Il y a un lion là-dehors, je risque d’être déchiré en pleine rue! »14La bouche des femmes adultères est comme une fosse profonde: celui contre qui l’Eternel est irrité y tombera*.15La tendance à faire des actions déraisonnables est ancrée dans le cœur de l’enfant, le bâton de la correction l’en extirpera.16Qui opprime le pauvre pour réaliser un gain, ou qui fait des cadeaux aux riches, finira dans la pauvreté.17Prête l’oreille et écoute les paroles des sages, applique ton cœur à mon enseignement,18car tu auras du plaisir à garder ces maximes au fond de ton cœur et à les avoir à la disposition de tes lèvres.19Pour que tu mettes ta confiance en l’Eternel, je vais t’instruire, toi aussi, aujourd’hui;20j’ai consigné par écrit pour toi une trentaine* de maximes comportant des conseils et des réflexions,21pour t’apporter une connaissance sûre, des paroles vraies. Ainsi tu pourras donner des réponses vraies à celui qui t’envoie.22Ne profite pas de la pauvreté de ton prochain pour le dépouiller, n’écrase pas en justice celui qui est dans la misère,23car l’Eternel prendra leur cause en main et il ravira la vie à ceux qui auront ravi leurs biens.24Ne te lie pas d’amitié avec un homme coléreux et ne fréquente pas celui qui s’emporte pour un rien25de peur d’acquérir le même comportement et de mettre ainsi ta vie en péril.26Ne t’engage pas pour cautionner autrui, et ne te porte pas garant d’un emprunt*,27car, si tu n’es pas en mesure de payer, pourquoi t’exposerais-tu à te voir enlever jusqu’au lit où tu reposes?28Ne déplace pas les anciennes bornes que tes ancêtres ont placées.29Connaissez-vous un homme habile dans ce qu’il fait? Il ne restera pas au service de gens obscurs, mais il entrera au service des rois.
