Paul travels through Macedonia and Greece

1 All the trouble came to an end. Then Paul sent for the believers. After encouraging them, he said goodbye. He then left for Macedonia. 2 He travelled through that area, speaking many words of hope to the people. Finally he arrived in Greece. 3 There he stayed for three months. He was just about to sail for Syria. But some Jews were making plans against him. So he decided to go back through Macedonia. 4 Sopater, the son of Pyrrhus from Berea, went with him. Aristarchus and Secundus from Thessalonica, Gaius from Derbe, and Timothy went too. Tychicus and Trophimus from Asia Minor also went with him. 5 These men went on ahead. They waited for us at Troas. 6 But we sailed from Philippi after the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Five days later we joined the others at Troas. We stayed there for seven days.

Eutychus is raised from the dead at Troas

7 On the first day of the week we met to break bread and eat together. Paul spoke to the people. He kept on talking until midnight because he planned to leave the next day. 8 There were many lamps in the room upstairs where we were meeting. 9 A young man named Eutychus was sitting in a window. He sank into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. Sound asleep, Eutychus fell from the third floor. When they picked him up from the ground, he was dead. 10 Paul went down and threw himself on the young man. He put his arms around him. ‘Don’t be alarmed,’ he told them. ‘He’s alive!’ 11 Then Paul went upstairs again. He broke bread and ate with them. He kept on talking until daylight. Then he left. 12 The people took the young man home. They were greatly comforted because he was alive.

Paul says goodbye to the Ephesian elders

13 We went on ahead to the ship. We sailed for Assos. There we were going to take Paul on board. He had planned it this way because he wanted to go to Assos by land. 14 So he met us there. We took him on board and went on to Mitylene. 15 The next day we sailed from there. We arrived near Chios. The day after that we crossed over to Samos. We arrived at Miletus the next day. 16 Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus. He didn’t want to spend time in Asia Minor. He was in a hurry to get to Jerusalem. If he could, he wanted to be there by the day of Pentecost. 17 From Miletus, Paul sent for the elders of the church at Ephesus. 18 When they arrived, he spoke to them. ‘You know how I lived the whole time I was with you,’ he said. ‘From the first day I came into Asia Minor, 19 I served the Lord with tears and without pride. I served him when I was greatly tested. I was tested by the evil plans of the Jews who disagreed with me. 20 You know that nothing has kept me from preaching whatever would help you. I have taught you in public and from house to house. 21 I have told both Jews and Greeks that they must turn away from their sins to God. They must have faith in our Lord Jesus. 22 ‘Now I am going to Jerusalem. The Holy Spirit compels me. I don’t know what will happen to me there. 23 I only know that in every city the Spirit warns me. He tells me that I will face prison and suffering. 24 But my life means nothing to me. My only goal is to finish the race. I want to complete the work the Lord Jesus has given me. He wants me to tell others about the good news of God’s grace. 25 ‘I have spent time with you preaching about the kingdom. I know that none of you will ever see me again. 26 So I tell you today that I am not guilty if any of you don’t believe. 27 I haven’t let anyone keep me from telling you everything God wants you to do. 28 Keep watch over yourselves. Keep watch over all the believers. The Holy Spirit has made you leaders over them. Be shepherds of God’s church. He bought it with his own blood. 29 I know that after I leave, wild wolves will come in among you. They won’t spare any of the sheep. 30 Even men from your own people will rise up and twist the truth. They want to get the believers to follow them. 31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning you. Night and day I warned each of you with tears. 32 ‘Now I trust God to take care of you. I commit you to the message about his grace. It can build you up. Then you will share in what God plans to give all his people. 33 I haven’t longed for anyone’s silver or gold or clothing. 34 You yourselves know that I have used my own hands to meet my needs. I have also met the needs of my companions. 35 In everything I did, I showed you that we must work hard and help the weak. We must remember the words of the Lord Jesus. He said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” ’ 36 Paul finished speaking. Then he got down on his knees with all of them and prayed. 37 They all wept as they hugged and kissed him. 38 Paul had said that they would never see him again. That’s what hurt them the most. Then they went with him to the ship.

Paulus reser till Makedonien och Grekland

1 När allt blivit lugnt igen i Efesos, kallade Paulus samman Jesus efterföljare och uppmuntrade dem. Sedan tog han farväl av dem och började sin resa över till Makedonien. 2 Där reste han från plats till plats och uppmuntrade de troende, och när han kom fram till Grekland 3 stannade han i tre månader. Han skulle just segla vidare till Syrien när han fick reda på att några judar gjort upp planer på att döda honom, och han ändrade därför resrutten och for tillbaka upp genom Makedonien. 4 En hel grupp av män skulle resa med honom ner till Syrien och vidare till Jerusalem. Det var Sopatros, Pyrrhos son, från Beroia, Aristarchos och Secundus från Thessalonike, Gaius från Derbe, Timotheos samt Tychikos och Trofimos från provinsen Asien*. 5 Men han lät dem nu segla i förväg över till Troas och vänta på oss* där. 6 Efter påskhögtiden* gick sedan vi andra ombord på ett fartyg i Filippi, och fem dagar senare mötte vi dem i Troas, där vi stannade en vecka.

7 På söndagen, när vi hade samlats för att bryta bröd tillsammans, talade Paulus till de troende, och eftersom han skulle resa från Troas nästa dag höll han på ända till midnatt. 8 Rummet på övre våningen, där vi var samlade, var upplyst av många oljelampor, 9 och en ung man som hette Eutychos hade satt sig i fönstret. Men när Paulus talade så länge råkade han somna och föll ner från tredje våningen och dog. 10 Paulus sprang då ner och la sig över honom och tog honom i sina armar och sa: ”Oroa er inte, han lever!” 11 Och så gick alla tillbaka upp och bröt brödet och åt tillsammans. Sedan fortsatte Paulus att tala ytterligare en stund, ja, det hann faktiskt bli morgon innan han till slut lämnade dem. 12 Men den unga mannen som trillat ut genom fönstret fördes hem livs levande till stor lättnad för alla.

Paulus avsked till församlingsledarna i Efesos

13 Paulus tog sedan landvägen över till staden Assos, medan vi andra reste runt med båt. 14 När vi efter ett tag mötte honom i Assos, tog vi honom ombord och reste ner till Mitylene. 15 Därifrån seglade vi vidare och passerade nästa dag ön Chios. Dagen därpå la vi till vid ön Samos, och en dag senare var vi framme i staden Miletos. 16 Paulus hade bestämt sig för att inte resa till Efesos den här gången, trots att staden låg i närheten. Han ville inte bli uppehållen i provinsen Asien*, eftersom han ville hinna till Jerusalem och fira pingsthögtiden där. Men när vi kom fram till Miletos skickade han i alla fall ett meddelande till församlingsledarna i Efesos och bad dem att komma ner till fartyget för att träffa honom. 18 När de hade anlänt sa han till dem: ”Ni vet om allt jag har gjort ända från den dag då jag först satte min fot i provinsen Asien. 19 Ni vet att jag utan att tänka på mig själv har tjänat Herren Jesus, trots de sorger och prövningar som drabbat mig genom judarnas angrepp. 20 Jag har aldrig tvekat att säga något som kunde vara till nytta för er, utan har undervisat er både offentligt och i hemmen. 21 Jag har allvarligt uppmanat både judar och icke-judar att vända om till Gud och tro på vår Herre Jesus. 22 Men nu drivs jag av Guds Ande* att resa tillbaka till Jerusalem, trots att jag inte vet vad som väntar mig. 23 Det enda jag vet är att Guds heliga Ande i stad efter stad har sagt till mig att fängelse och lidande ligger framför mig. 24 Men för mig är livet inget värt, om jag inte får använda det till att slutföra den uppgift som Herren Jesus har gett mig. Ända till livets slut vill jag sprida det glada budskapet om Guds kärlek och förlåtelse. 25 Och nu vet jag att ni aldrig kommer att få se mig igen, alla ni som jag har besökt och undervisat om hur ni kunde få bli Guds eget folk. 26 Därför vill jag säga er idag att jag inte är skyldig till om någon av er går evigt förlorad, 27 för jag har utan att tveka meddelat er hela Guds plan om räddning. 28 Se nu noga till hur ni själva lever, och ta väl hand om de människor som Guds heliga Ande har satt er till ledare för. Var som herdar för Guds församling, den hjord som han har köpt med sin egen Sons blod. 29 Jag vet att när jag lämnar er kommer glupska vargar att kasta sig in bland er, och de kommer inte att skona hjorden. 30 Några av er kommer själva att förvränga sanningen och försöka få anhängare bland Jesus efterföljare. 31 Var därför på er vakt! Kom ihåg att jag under tre år personligen har undervisat var och en av er, och att jag dag och natt under tårar har förmanat er. 32 Jag ber nu att Gud ska ta hand om er. Glöm inte budskapet om hans kärlek och förlåtelse. Låt det vägleda er, så att er tro blir allt starkare och ni får del av det arv som väntar dem som tillhör Gud. 33 Ni vet att jag aldrig har krävt att få pengar eller kläder av er, 34 utan att jag med egna händer har försörjt både mig själv och mina medhjälpare. 35 Jag ville genom mitt eget handlande visa att man ska hjälpa de fattiga genom hårt arbete. Kom ihåg att Herren Jesus sa: ’Man blir lyckligare av att ge än av att få.’ ” 36 När Paulus sedan slutat tala föll han på knä och bad tillsammans med dem. 37 Då började männen gråta högt och omfamna honom och kyssa honom. 38 Och det som bedrövade dem allra mest var att han sa att de aldrig mer skulle ses här i livet. Sedan följde alla honom ner till fartyget.
