1Este es el mensaje del SEÑOR contra Babilonia y los caldeos, proclamado por el profeta Jeremías:2Dile a todo el mundo que Babilonia será destruida. No ahorren en medios para dar a conocer por todas partes la pronta destrucción de Babilonia. Sus dioses Marduc y Bel serán completamente avergonzados,3pues contra Babilonia se lanzará desde el norte una nación que la arrasará de tal modo que nadie volverá a vivir en ella jamás. No quedará nada: habitantes y bestias saldrán huyendo.4Entonces, sollozando, los pueblos de Israel y Judá se reunirán y buscarán al SEÑOR su Dios.5Preguntarán cuál es el camino a Sion y emprenderán el regreso. «Vamos», dirán, «unámonos al SEÑOR en compromiso eterno que jamás volverá a ser quebrantado».6Como ovejas perdidas ha sido el pueblo mío. Sus pastores lo desviaron y abandonaron luego en los montes. Los israelitas se extraviaron y no supieron cómo volver al redil.7Quienes los encontraban los devoraban, diciendo: «Tenemos permiso para atacarlos a nuestro antojo, porque han pecado contra el SEÑOR, el Dios de justicia, la esperanza de sus antepasados».8Pero ahora, escapen de Babilonia, tierra de los caldeos; lleven a mi pueblo de regreso a su patria con la misma decisión que los machos cabríos guían a sus grupos.9¡Pues miren que yo levanto un ejército de naciones poderosas del norte y las lanzo al ataque contra Babilonia, la cual será destruida! ¡Las flechas enemigas dan en el blanco, no fallan!10Y Babilonia será saqueada hasta que todo el mundo quede satisfecho del botín, dice el SEÑOR.11¡Estuvieron alegres, caldeos, despojadores de mi pueblo, y están gordos como vacas que pastan en jugosos prados, y relinchan como caballos alegres!12¡Pero su madre será abrumada de vergüenza, porque se convertirá en la nación más despreciable: en desierto, en tierra seca y estéril!13Por la cólera del SEÑOR Babilonia se convertirá en un paraje desierto, y cuantos por allí pasen se quedarán con la boca abierta y harán burla de todas sus heridas.14¡Sí, alístense para la batalla contra Babilonia todas las naciones del entorno! Disparen contra ella los arqueros; no economicen flechas, porque ha pecado contra el SEÑOR.15Griten contra ella de todos los rumbos. ¡Miren! ¡Ya se rinde! ¡Sus murallas se han derrumbado! ¡Ya se cumplió la venganza del SEÑOR! ¡Hagan con ella como ella hizo con ustedes!16¡Abandónenla todos los jornaleros, huyan a sus fincas conforme se acerca el enemigo!17Como ovejas perseguidas por los leones son los israelitas. Primero los devoró el rey de Asiria, luego Nabucodonosor, rey de Babilonia, les trituró los huesos.18Por eso dice el SEÑOR de los ejércitos, el Dios de Israel: ¡Ahora castigaré al rey de Babilonia y a su país, como castigué al rey de Asiria!19Y traeré a Israel de regreso a su patria, para que coma en los campos del Carmelo y Basán, y vuelva a ser feliz en el monte de Efraín y en el de Galaad.20¡En aquellos días, dice el SEÑOR, no se hallará pecado en Israel ni en Judá, porque yo perdonaré a los que hayan quedado, a quienes yo liberé!21¡Arriba, guerreros míos, contra la tierra de Meratayin y contra el pueblo de Pecod! ¡Sí, en marcha al ataque contra Babilonia, tierra de rebeldes, tierra que yo castigaré! ¡Destrúyanlos por completo como les he mandado!22¡Que se oiga en el país clamor de batalla, gritos de gran destrucción!, dice el SEÑOR.23Babilonia, el más poderoso martillo del mundo, está quebrada y esparcida por el suelo. ¡Derrotada entre las naciones está Babilonia!24¡Ay Babilonia, te puse trampa y caíste, porque luchaste contra el SEÑOR!25El SEÑOR abrió su arsenal y sacó armas para hacer estallar su coraje sobre sus enemigos. El terror que cae sobre Babilonia será obra de Dios, el SEÑOR de los ejércitos.26¡Sí, vengan contra ella desde tierras lejanas, irrumpan en sus graneros, derriben sus murallas y casas hasta convertirlas en un montón de ruinas y la arrasen por completo! ¡Que no quede nada en pie,27ni siquiera su ganado! ¡Ay de ellos también! ¡Mueran todos, porque ha llegado la hora de que Babilonia sea devastada!28Pero mi pueblo será librado; escaparán para regresar a su patria y contar cómo el SEÑOR Dios suyo se lanzó furioso contra quienes destruyeron su templo.29Manda a llamar arqueros que vengan contra Babilonia; rodea la ciudad para que nadie pueda escapar. Haz con ella como ella hizo con otros, pues envalentonada desafió al SEÑOR, al Santo de Israel.30Sus muchachos más valiosos caerán en la calle y morirán; todos sus guerreros serán muertos, dice el SEÑOR.31No les quede la menor duda: ¡Yo estoy contra ti, pueblo orgulloso, ya te llegó tu hora, pueblo famoso por tu insolencia!32¡Patria del orgullo, tropezarás y caerás y no habrá quien te levante, porque el SEÑOR encenderá un fuego en las ciudades de Babilonia que consumirá cuanto hay en torno!33Así dice el SEÑOR de los ejércitos: Injustamente han sido tratados los pueblos de Israel y Judá. Quienes los esclavizaron se niegan a dejarles en libertad.34Pero el Liberador de ellos es fuerte. Se llama SEÑOR de los ejércitos. Él será su abogado y se encargará de que obtengan libertad y regresen a vivir tranquilos en Israel. ¡Pero los babilonios no tendrán reposo!35La guerra destructora caerá sobre los caldeos, dice el SEÑOR. Caerá la guerra sobre el pueblo de Babilonia sin que se libren ni sus príncipes ni sus sabios.36¡Todos sus prudentes consejeros resultarán necios! ¡Habrá pánico entre todos sus más valientes guerreros!37La guerra consumirá sus caballos y sus carros de guerra, y sus aliados extranjeros serán débiles como mujeres. Será despojado de todos sus tesoros,38y hasta el agua le faltará. ¿Y por qué? ¡Porque todo el país está lleno de idolatría y el pueblo está locamente enamorado de sus ídolos!39Por lo tanto, esta ciudad de Babilonia se convertirá en morada de avestruces y chacales, será guarida de alimañas del desierto. Jamás volverá a ser habitada por seres humanos; quedará desolada para siempre.40El SEÑOR anuncia que destruirá a Babilonia como destruyó a Sodoma, Gomorra y sus pueblos aledaños. Nadie volvió a vivir en ellos jamás, así como tampoco nadie volverá a vivir en Babilonia.41¡Allá vienen! ¡Es un gran ejército que marcha desde el norte! Lo acompañan muchos reyes venidos desde diversos países.42Armados hasta los dientes, vienen a la matanza; son crueles e implacables; su grito de guerra retumba como el mar que se estrella contra las rocas. ¡Ay Babilonia, vienen en sus carros de guerra a presentarte batalla!43Cuando recibió el mensaje, el rey de Babilonia dejó impotente caer los brazos; el terror le produjo dolores como de mujer a punto de dar a luz.44Enviaré contra ellos un invasor que los atacará de pronto, como si fuera un león de los bosques de Jordania que se lanza sobre las ovejas en el prado. Pondré en fuga a sus defensores y haré que los gobierne alguien que yo elija. ¿Quién como yo? ¿Qué gobernante puede llevarme la contraria? ¿Quién puede pedirme cuentas?45Oigan el plan del SEÑOR contra Babilonia, tierra de los caldeos. Porque hasta los niñitos serán llevados como esclavos, y sus posesiones serán saqueadas y destruidas. ¡Qué espanto! ¡Qué horror!46¡El mundo entero se estremecerá por la caída de Babilonia, y su grito desesperado se oirá por toda la tierra!

Judgment on Babylon
1The word that the Lord spoke concerning Babylon, concerning the land of the Chaldeans, by Jeremiah the prophet:2“Declare among the nations and proclaim, set up a banner and proclaim, conceal it not, and say: ‘Babylon is taken, Bel is put to shame, Merodach is dismayed. Her images are put to shame, her idols are dismayed.’3“For out of the north a nation has come up against her, which shall make her land a desolation, and none shall dwell in it; both man and beast shall flee away.4“In those days and in that time, declares the Lord, the people of Israel and the people of Judah shall come together, weeping as they come, and they shall seek the Lord their God.5They shall ask the way to Zion, with faces turned toward it, saying, ‘Come, let us join ourselves to the Lord in an everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten.’6“My people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds have led them astray, turning them away on the mountains. From mountain to hill they have gone. They have forgotten their fold.7All who found them have devoured them, and their enemies have said, ‘We are not guilty, for they have sinned against the Lord, their habitation of righteousness, the Lord, the hope of their fathers.’8“Flee from the midst of Babylon, and go out of the land of the Chaldeans, and be as male goats before the flock.9For behold, I am stirring up and bringing against Babylon a gathering of great nations, from the north country. And they shall array themselves against her. From there she shall be taken. Their arrows are like a skilled warrior who does not return empty-handed.10Chaldea shall be plundered; all who plunder her shall be sated, declares the Lord.11“Though you rejoice, though you exult, O plunderers of my heritage, though you frolic like a heifer in the pasture, and neigh like stallions,12your mother shall be utterly shamed, and she who bore you shall be disgraced. Behold, she shall be the last of the nations, a wilderness, a dry land, and a desert.13Because of the wrath of the Lord she shall not be inhabited but shall be an utter desolation; everyone who passes by Babylon shall be appalled, and hiss because of all her wounds.14Set yourselves in array against Babylon all around, all you who bend the bow; shoot at her, spare no arrows, for she has sinned against the Lord.15Raise a shout against her all around; she has surrendered; her bulwarks have fallen; her walls are thrown down. For this is the vengeance of the Lord: take vengeance on her; do to her as she has done.16Cut off from Babylon the sower, and the one who handles the sickle in time of harvest; because of the sword of the oppressor, every one shall turn to his own people, and every one shall flee to his own land.17“Israel is a hunted sheep driven away by lions. First the king of Assyria devoured him, and now at last Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has gnawed his bones.18Therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing punishment on the king of Babylon and his land, as I punished the king of Assyria.19I will restore Israel to his pasture, and he shall feed on Carmel and in Bashan, and his desire shall be satisfied on the hills of Ephraim and in Gilead.20In those days and in that time, declares the Lord, iniquity shall be sought in Israel, and there shall be none, and sin in Judah, and none shall be found, for I will pardon those whom I leave as a remnant.21“Go up against the land of Merathaim,* and against the inhabitants of Pekod.* Kill, and devote them to destruction,* declares the Lord, and do all that I have commanded you.22The noise of battle is in the land, and great destruction!23How the hammer of the whole earth is cut down and broken! How Babylon has become a horror among the nations!24I set a snare for you and you were taken, O Babylon, and you did not know it; you were found and caught, because you opposed the Lord.25The Lord has opened his armory and brought out the weapons of his wrath, for the Lord God of hosts has a work to do in the land of the Chaldeans.26Come against her from every quarter; open her granaries; pile her up like heaps of grain, and devote her to destruction; let nothing be left of her.27Kill all her bulls; let them go down to the slaughter. Woe to them, for their day has come, the time of their punishment.28“A voice! They flee and escape from the land of Babylon, to declare in Zion the vengeance of the Lord our God, vengeance for his temple.29“Summon archers against Babylon, all those who bend the bow. Encamp around her; let no one escape. Repay her according to her deeds; do to her according to all that she has done. For she has proudly defied the Lord, the Holy One of Israel.30Therefore her young men shall fall in her squares, and all her soldiers shall be destroyed on that day, declares the Lord.31“Behold, I am against you, O proud one, declares the Lord God of hosts, for your day has come, the time when I will punish you.32The proud one shall stumble and fall, with none to raise him up, and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it will devour all that is around him.33“Thus says the Lord of hosts: The people of Israel are oppressed, and the people of Judah with them. All who took them captive have held them fast; they refuse to let them go.34Their Redeemer is strong; the Lord of hosts is his name. He will surely plead their cause, that he may give rest to the earth, but unrest to the inhabitants of Babylon.35“A sword against the Chaldeans, declares the Lord, and against the inhabitants of Babylon, and against her officials and her wise men!36A sword against the diviners, that they may become fools! A sword against her warriors, that they may be destroyed!37A sword against her horses and against her chariots, and against all the foreign troops in her midst, that they may become women! A sword against all her treasures, that they may be plundered!38A drought against her waters, that they may be dried up! For it is a land of images, and they are mad over idols.39“Therefore wild beasts shall dwell with hyenas in Babylon,* and ostriches shall dwell in her. She shall never again have people, nor be inhabited for all generations.40As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities, declares the Lord, so no man shall dwell there, and no son of man shall sojourn in her.41“Behold, a people comes from the north; a mighty nation and many kings are stirring from the farthest parts of the earth.42They lay hold of bow and spear; they are cruel and have no mercy. The sound of them is like the roaring of the sea; they ride on horses, arrayed as a man for battle against you, O daughter of Babylon!43“The king of Babylon heard the report of them, and his hands fell helpless; anguish seized him, pain as of a woman in labor.44“Behold, like a lion coming up from the thicket of the Jordan against a perennial pasture, I will suddenly make them run away from her, and I will appoint over her whomever I choose. For who is like me? Who will summon me? What shepherd can stand before me?45Therefore hear the plan that the Lord has made against Babylon, and the purposes that he has formed against the land of the Chaldeans: Surely the little ones of their flock shall be dragged away; surely their fold shall be appalled at their fate.46At the sound of the capture of Babylon the earth shall tremble, and her cry shall be heard among the nations.”
