1And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.2And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it , (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)3That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,4Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.5And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.6And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?7And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.8But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:9And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?10And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father' loins.11And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.12So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.13And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men' counsel that they gave him;14And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.15Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.16So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.17But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.18Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.19So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.20And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.21And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.22But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,23Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,24Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.25Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.26And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:27If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.28Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.29And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.30And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.31And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.32And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.33So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.

Rehabeam wird König über Juda, Jerobeam über Israel
1Und Rehabeam zog nach Sichem; denn ganz Israel war nach Sichem gekommen, um ihn zum König zu machen.2Und es geschah, als Jerobeam, der Sohn Nebats, dies hörte (Jerobeam war aber noch in Ägypten, wohin er vor dem König Salomo geflohen war, denn Jerobeam war in Ägypten geblieben;3und man hatte hingesandt und ihn rufen lassen), da kamen Jerobeam und die ganze Gemeinde Israels und redeten mit Rehabeam und sprachen:4Dein Vater hat unser Joch hart gemacht; so mache du nun den harten Dienst deines Vaters und das schwere Joch, das er uns auferlegt hat, leichter, so wollen wir dir dienen!5Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Geht hin für drei Tage, dann kommt wieder zu mir! Und das Volk ging weg.6Da hielt der König Rehabeam einen Rat mit den Ältesten, die vor seinem Vater Salomo gestanden hatten, als er noch lebte, und sprach: Wie ratet ihr, dass wir diesem Volk antworten sollen?7Sie aber antworteten ihm so: Wenn du heute diesem Volk ein Knecht wirst und ihm dienst und auf es hörst und zu ihm gute Worte sprichst, so werden sie deine Knechte sein dein Leben lang!8Aber er verwarf den Rat der Ältesten, den sie ihm gegeben hatten, und hielt Rat mit den Jungen, die mit ihm aufgewachsen waren, die vor ihm standen.9Und er sprach zu ihnen: Was ratet ihr, dass wir diesem Volk antworten, das zu mir gesagt und gesprochen hat: Mache das Joch leichter, das dein Vater auf uns gelegt hat?10Da redeten die Jungen zu ihm, die mit ihm aufgewachsen waren, und sprachen: Dem Volk, das zu dir gesagt hat: »Dein Vater hat unser Joch zu schwer gemacht, du aber mache es uns leichter!«, dem sollst du so antworten: »Mein kleiner Finger ist dicker als die Lenden meines Vaters!11Und nun, wenn mein Vater ein schweres Joch auf euch gelegt hat, so will ich euer Joch noch schwerer machen! Hat mein Vater euch mit Geißeln gezüchtigt, so will ich euch mit Skorpionen züchtigen!«12Als nun Jerobeam samt dem ganzen Volk am dritten Tag zu Rehabeam kam, wie der König gesagt hatte: »Kommt am dritten Tag zu mir!«,13da gab der König dem Volk eine harte Antwort und verwarf den Rat, den ihm die Ältesten gegeben hatten,14und er redete mit ihnen nach dem Rat der Jungen und sprach: Mein Vater hat euer Joch schwer gemacht, ich aber will euer Joch noch schwerer machen! Mein Vater hat euch mit Geißeln gezüchtigt, ich aber will euch mit Skorpionen züchtigen!15So schenkte der König dem Volk kein Gehör; denn es wurde so vom HERRN gefügt, damit er sein Wort erfüllte, das der HERR durch Achija von Silo zu Jerobeam, dem Sohn Nebats, geredet hatte.16Als nun ganz Israel sah, dass der König ihnen kein Gehör schenkte, antwortete das Volk dem König und sprach: Was haben wir für einen Anteil an David? Wir haben kein Erbteil an dem Sohn Isais! Auf, Israel, zu deinen Zelten! Sorge du nun für dein Haus, David! — So ging Israel zu seinen Zelten.17Und Rehabeam regierte nur über die Kinder Israels, die in den Städten Judas wohnten.18Und der König Rehabeam sandte den Fronmeister Adoram hin, aber ganz Israel steinigte ihn, sodass er starb; der König Rehabeam aber eilte und stieg auf seinen Wagen, um nach Jerusalem zu fliehen.19So fiel Israel ab vom Haus Davids bis zu diesem Tag.20Und es geschah, als ganz Israel hörte, dass Jerobeam zurückgekommen war, da sandten sie hin und beriefen ihn in die Volksversammlung und machten ihn zum König über ganz Israel, und niemand folgte dem Haus Davids als allein der Stamm Juda.21Als aber Rehabeam nach Jerusalem kam, versammelte er das ganze Haus Juda und den Stamm Benjamin, 180 000 auserlesene Krieger, um gegen das Haus Israel zu kämpfen und das Königtum wieder an Rehabeam, den Sohn Salomos, zu bringen.22Aber das Wort Gottes erging an Schemaja, den Mann Gottes, folgendermaßen:23Rede zu Rehabeam, dem Sohn Salomos, dem König von Juda, und zum Haus Juda und zu Benjamin und dem übrigen Volk und sprich:24»So spricht der HERR: Ihr sollt nicht hinaufziehen, um gegen eure Brüder, die Söhne Israels, zu kämpfen! Kehrt um, jeder zu seinem Haus, denn von mir aus ist diese Sache geschehen!« Und sie hörten auf das Wort des HERRN und kehrten um, wie der HERR gesagt hatte.
Jerobeam führt einen falschen Gottesdienst ein und macht dem Volk goldene Kälber
25Jerobeam aber baute Sichem auf dem Bergland Ephraim aus und wohnte darin; und er zog aus von dort und baute Pnuel.26Jerobeam aber dachte in seinem Herzen: Das Königreich wird nun wieder dem Haus Davids zufallen!27Wenn dieses Volk hinaufziehen wird, um im Haus des HERRN in Jerusalem Opfer darzubringen, so wird sich das Herz dieses Volkes wieder zu ihrem Herrn wenden, zu Rehabeam, dem König von Juda; ja, sie werden mich töten und sich wieder Rehabeam, dem König von Juda, zuwenden!28Darum hielt der König Rat und machte zwei goldene Kälber und sprach zu [dem Volk]: Es ist zu viel für euch, nach Jerusalem hinaufzuziehen! Siehe, das sind deine Götter, Israel, die dich aus dem Land Ägypten herausgeführt haben!29Und er stellte das eine in Bethel auf, und das andere setzte er nach Dan.30Aber diese Tat wurde [für Israel] zur Sünde; und das Volk lief zu dem einen [Kalb] bis nach Dan.31Er machte auch ein Höhenheiligtum und setzte aus dem ganzen Volk Leute zu Priestern ein, die nicht von den Söhnen Levis waren.32Ferner ordnete Jerobeam ein Fest an, am fünfzehnten Tag des achten Monats, wie das Fest in Juda, und opferte auf dem Altar. Ebenso machte er es in Bethel, indem er den Kälbern opferte, die er gemacht hatte; und er ließ in Bethel die Priester der Höhen den Dienst verrichten, die er eingesetzt hatte.33Und er opferte auf dem Altar, den er in Bethel gemacht hatte, am fünfzehnten Tag des achten Monats, des Monats, den er aus seinem eigenen Herzen erdacht hatte; und er veranstaltete den Kindern Israels ein Fest und opferte auf dem Altar und räucherte.*
