1 And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Bethel: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense. 2 And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men' bones shall be burnt upon thee. 3 And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out. 4 And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Bethel, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him. 5 The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD. 6 And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the LORD, and the king' hand was restored him again, and became as it was before. 7 And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward. 8 And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place: 9 For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest. 10 So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel. 11 Now there dwelt an old prophet in Bethel; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Bethel: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father. 12 And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah. 13 And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon, 14 And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am . 15 Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread. 16 And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place: 17 For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest. 18 He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art ; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him. 19 So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water. 20 And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back: 21 And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee, 22 But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the LORD did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers. 23 And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit , for the prophet whom he had brought back. 24 And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase. 25 And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt. 26 And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof , he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him. 27 And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him . 28 And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass. 29 And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him. 30 And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying , Alas, my brother! 31 And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones: 32 For the saying which he cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in Bethel, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass. 33 After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places. 34 And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.

1 Aber siehe, ein Mann Gottes kam von Juda durch das Wort des HERRN nach Bethel, als Jerobeam eben bei dem Altar stand, um zu räuchern. 2 Und er rief gegen den Altar durch das Wort des HERRN und sprach: Altar! Altar! So spricht der HERR: »Siehe, es wird dem Haus Davids ein Sohn namens Josia geboren werden, der wird auf dir die Priester der Höhen schlachten, die auf dir räuchern, und man wird Menschengebeine auf dir verbrennen!« 3 Und er gab an jenem Tag ein Zeichen und sprach: Das ist das Zeichen, dass der HERR dies geredet hat: Siehe, der Altar wird bersten und die Asche, die darauf ist, verschüttet werden! 4 Und es geschah, als der König das Wort des Mannes Gottes hörte, der gegen den Altar von Bethel rief, da streckte Jerobeam seine Hand aus vom Altar herab und sprach: Ergreift ihn! Da verdorrte seine Hand, die er gegen ihn ausgestreckt hatte, sodass er sie nicht wieder zu sich ziehen konnte. 5 Und der Altar barst, und die Asche wurde vom Altar herabverschüttet, gemäß dem Zeichen, das der Mann Gottes durch das Wort des HERRN angekündigt hatte. 6 Da ergriff der König das Wort und sprach zu dem Mann Gottes: Besänftige doch das Angesicht des HERRN, deines Gottes, und bitte für mich, dass meine Hand mir wieder gegeben werde! Da besänftigte der Mann Gottes das Angesicht des HERRN. Und die Hand des Königs wurde ihm wiedergegeben, und sie wurde wieder wie zuvor. 7 Da sprach der König zu dem Mann Gottes: Komm mit mir heim und erfrische dich! Ich will dir auch ein Geschenk geben. 8 Aber der Mann Gottes sprach zum König: Wenn du mir auch dein halbes Haus geben würdest, so käme ich nicht mit dir; denn ich würde an diesem Ort kein Brot essen und kein Wasser trinken. 9 Denn so wurde mir durch das Wort des HERRN geboten und gesagt: Du sollst kein Brot essen und kein Wasser trinken und nicht wieder auf dem Weg zurückkehren, den du gegangen bist! 10 Und er ging einen anderen Weg und kehrte nicht wieder auf dem gleichen Weg zurück, auf dem er nach Bethel gekommen war.

Der Ungehorsam des Propheten wird bestraft

11 Aber in Bethel wohnte ein alter Prophet. Zu dem kam einer seiner Söhne und erzählte ihm alles, was der Mann Gottes an jenem Tag in Bethel getan hatte; [auch] die Worte, die er zum König geredet hatte, erzählten sie ihrem Vater. 12 Da sprach ihr Vater zu ihnen: Welchen Weg ist er gegangen? Und seine Söhne hatten den Weg gesehen, den der Mann Gottes, der von Juda gekommen war, eingeschlagen hatte. 13 Er aber sprach zu seinen Söhnen: Sattelt mir den Esel! Und sie sattelten ihm den Esel, und er ritt darauf; 14 und er ging dem Mann Gottes nach und fand ihn unter einer Terebinthe sitzen und sprach zu ihm: Bist du der Mann Gottes, der von Juda gekommen ist? Er sprach: Ich bin’s! 15 Da sprach er zu ihm: Komm mit mir heim und iss etwas! 16 Er aber sprach: Ich kann nicht umkehren und mit dir kommen; ich will auch mit dir weder Brot essen noch Wasser trinken an diesem Ort; 17 denn durch das Wort des HERRN ist zu mir gesagt worden: Du sollst dort weder Brot essen noch Wasser trinken; du sollst nicht auf dem gleichen Weg zurückkehren, auf dem du hingegangen bist! 18 Aber jener sprach zu ihm: Ich bin auch ein Prophet wie du, und ein Engel hat durch das Wort des HERRN zu mir geredet und gesagt: Führe ihn zurück in dein Haus, damit er Brot esse und Wasser trinke! Er log es ihm aber vor. 19 Da kehrte er mit ihm um und aß in seinem Haus Brot und trank Wasser. 20 Als sie aber zu Tisch saßen, da kam das Wort des HERRN zu dem Propheten, der ihn zurückgeführt hatte, 21 und er rief dem Mann Gottes zu, der von Juda gekommen war, und sprach: So spricht der HERR: Weil du dem Befehl des HERRN ungehorsam gewesen bist und das Gebot nicht gehalten hast, das dir der HERR, dein Gott, geboten hat, 22 sondern umgekehrt bist und Brot gegessen und Wasser getrunken hast an diesem Ort, von dem er dir sagte, du solltest weder Brot essen noch Wasser trinken, so soll dein Leichnam nicht in das Grab deiner Väter kommen! 23 Und es geschah, nachdem er Brot gegessen und getrunken hatte, da sattelte er ihm, dem Propheten, den er zurückgeführt hatte, den Esel. 24 Als er nun fortging, da begegnete ihm auf dem Weg ein Löwe; der tötete ihn, und sein Leichnam lag hingestreckt auf dem Weg. Und der Esel stand neben ihm, und der Löwe stand neben dem Leichnam. 25 Und siehe, als Leute vorbeigingen, da sahen sie den Leichnam hingestreckt auf dem Weg liegen und den Löwen bei dem Leichnam stehen, und sie kamen und sagten es in der Stadt, in welcher der alte Prophet wohnte. 26 Als nun der Prophet, der ihn vom Weg zurückgeholt hatte, das hörte, sprach er: Es ist der Mann Gottes, der dem Befehl des HERRN ungehorsam gewesen ist; darum hat ihn der HERR dem Löwen übergeben, der hat ihn zerrissen und getötet nach dem Wort, das der HERR zu ihm geredet hat! 27 Und er redete mit seinen Söhnen und sprach: Sattelt mir den Esel! Und als sie ihn gesattelt hatten, 28 da ging er hin und fand seinen Leichnam hingestreckt auf dem Weg liegen und den Esel und den Löwen neben dem Leichnam stehen. Der Löwe hatte den Leichnam nicht gefressen und den Esel nicht zerrissen. 29 Da hob der Prophet den Leichnam des Mannes Gottes auf und legte ihn auf den Esel und führte ihn zurück. Und er kam in die Stadt des alten Propheten, um ihn zu beklagen und zu begraben. 30 Und er legte dessen Leichnam in sein eigenes Grab, und sie klagten um ihn: Ach, mein Bruder! 31 Und als er ihn begraben hatte, sprach er zu seinen Söhnen: Wenn ich sterbe, so begrabt mich in dem Grab, in dem der Mann Gottes begraben worden ist, und legt meine Gebeine neben seine Gebeine. 32 Denn das Wort wird gewiss eintreffen, das er durch das Wort des HERRN ausgerufen hat gegen den Altar in Bethel und gegen alle Höhenheiligtümer, die in den Städten Samarias sind! 33 Aber nach dieser Begebenheit kehrte Jerobeam nicht um von seinem bösen Weg, sondern er setzte wieder Höhenpriester aus dem gesamten Volk ein; wer Lust hatte, den weihte er, und der wurde Höhenpriester. 34 Und dies wurde dem Haus Jerobeams zur Sünde, sodass es vernichtet und aus dem Land vertilgt werden musste.
