The Resurrection

1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus’* head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes.

Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene

11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic,* “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews,* Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.” 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”

Jesus and Thomas

24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin,* was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” 26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The Purpose of This Book

30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

1 Le dimanche, Marie de Magdala se rendit au tombeau de bon matin, alors qu'il faisait encore sombre, et elle vit que la pierre avait été enlevée [de l'entrée] du tombeau. 2 Elle courut trouver Simon Pierre et l'autre disciple que Jésus aimait et leur dit: «Ils ont enlevé le Seigneur du tombeau et nous ne savons pas où ils l'ont mis.» 3 Pierre et l'autre disciple sortirent donc et allèrent au tombeau. 4 Ils couraient tous les deux ensemble, mais l'autre disciple courut plus vite que Pierre et arriva le premier au tombeau. 5 Il se pencha et vit les bandelettes posées par terre, cependant il n'entra pas. 6 Simon Pierre, qui le suivait, arriva et entra dans le tombeau. Il vit les bandelettes posées par terre; 7 le linge qu'on avait mis sur la tête de Jésus n'était pas avec les bandes, mais enroulé dans un endroit à part. 8 Alors l'autre disciple, qui était arrivé le premier au tombeau, entra aussi, il vit et il crut. 9 En effet, ils n'avaient pas encore compris que, d'après l'Ecriture, Jésus devait ressusciter. 10 Ensuite les disciples repartirent chez eux. 11 Cependant, Marie se tenait dehors près du tombeau et pleurait. Tout en pleurant, elle se pencha pour regarder dans le tombeau, 12 et elle vit deux anges habillés de blanc assis à la place où avait été couché le corps de Jésus, l'un à la tête et l'autre aux pieds. 13 Ils lui dirent: «Femme, pourquoi pleures-tu?» Elle leur répondit: «Parce qu'ils ont enlevé mon Seigneur et je ne sais pas où ils l'ont mis.» 14 En disant cela, elle se retourna et vit Jésus debout, mais elle ne savait pas que c'était lui. 15 Jésus lui dit: «Femme, pourquoi pleures-tu? Qui cherches-tu?» Pensant que c'était le jardinier, elle lui dit: «Seigneur, si c'est toi qui l'as emporté, dis-moi où tu l'as mis et j'irai le prendre.» 16 Jésus lui dit: «Marie!» Elle se retourna et lui dit en hébreu: «Rabbouni!», c'est-à-dire maître. 17 Jésus lui dit: «Ne me retiens pas, car je ne suis pas encore monté vers mon Père, mais va trouver mes frères et dis-leur que je monte vers mon Père et votre Père, vers mon Dieu et votre Dieu.» 18 Marie de Magdala alla annoncer aux disciples qu'elle avait vu le Seigneur et qu'il lui avait dit cela.

Apparitions de Jésus ressuscité aux disciples

19 Le soir de ce même dimanche, les portes de la maison où les disciples se trouvaient [rassemblés] étaient fermées car ils avaient peur des chefs juifs; Jésus vint alors se présenter au milieu d'eux et leur dit: «Que la paix soit avec vous!» 20 Après avoir dit cela, il leur montra ses mains et son côté. Les disciples furent remplis de joie en voyant le Seigneur. 21 Jésus leur dit de nouveau: «Que la paix soit avec vous! Tout comme le Père m'a envoyé, moi aussi je vous envoie.» 22 Après ces paroles, il souffla sur eux et leur dit: «Recevez le Saint-Esprit! 23 Ceux à qui vous pardonnerez les péchés, ils leur seront pardonnés; ceux à qui vous les retiendrez, ils leur seront retenus.» 24 Thomas appelé Didyme, l'un des douze, n'était pas avec eux lorsque Jésus vint. 25 Les autres disciples lui dirent donc: «Nous avons vu le Seigneur.» Mais il leur dit: «Si je ne vois pas dans ses mains la marque des clous, si je n'y mets pas mon doigt et si je ne mets pas ma main dans son côté, je ne croirai pas.» 26 Huit jours après, les disciples de Jésus étaient de nouveau dans la maison et Thomas se trouvait avec eux. Jésus vint alors que les portes étaient fermées, se tint au milieu d'eux et dit: «Que la paix soit avec vous!» 27 Puis il dit à Thomas: «Avance ton doigt ici et regarde mes mains. Avance aussi ta main et mets-la dans mon côté. Ne sois pas incrédule, mais crois!» 28 Thomas lui répondit: «Mon Seigneur et mon Dieu!» Jésus lui dit: 29 «Parce que tu m'as vu, tu as cru. Heureux ceux qui n'ont pas vu et qui ont cru!»

Objectif de l'auteur

30 Jésus a accompli encore, en présence de ses disciples, beaucoup d'autres signes qui ne sont pas décrits dans ce livre. 31 Mais ceux-ci ont été décrits afin que vous croyiez que Jésus est le Messie, le Fils de Dieu, et qu'en croyant vous ayez la vie en son nom.
