Jesus Delivered to Be Crucified

1 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. 2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. 3 They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands. 4 Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing him out to you that you may know that I find no guilt in him.” 5 So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!” 6 When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, “Crucify him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.” 7 The Jews* answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” 8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. 9 He entered his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have authority to release you and authority to crucify you?” 11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over me at all unless it had been given you from above. Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.” 12 From then on Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.” 13 So when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Stone Pavement, and in Aramaic* Gabbatha. 14 Now it was the day of Preparation of the Passover. It was about the sixth hour.* He said to the Jews, “Behold your King!” 15 They cried out, “Away with him, away with him, crucify him!” Pilate said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”

The Crucifixion

16 So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, 17 and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.” 23 When the soldiers had crucified Jesus, they took his garments and divided them into four parts, one part for each soldier; also his tunic.* But the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom, 24 so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things, 25 but standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

The Death of Jesus

28 After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” 29 A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Jesus’ Side Is Pierced

31 Since it was the day of Preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away. 32 So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who had been crucified with him. 33 But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once there came out blood and water. 35 He who saw it has borne witness—his testimony is true, and he knows that he is telling the truth—that you also may believe. 36 For these things took place that the Scripture might be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “They will look on him whom they have pierced.”

Jesus Is Buried

38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus* by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds* in weight. 40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there.

1 Alors Pilate ordonna de prendre Jésus et de le fouetter. 2 Les soldats tressèrent une couronne d'épines qu'ils posèrent sur sa tête et lui mirent un manteau de couleur pourpre. 3 Puis, [s'approchant de lui] ils disaient: «Salut, roi des Juifs!» et ils lui donnaient des gifles. 4 Pilate sortit de nouveau et dit aux Juifs: «Voilà, je vous l'amène dehors afin que vous sachiez que je ne trouve en lui aucun motif de le condamner.» 5 Jésus sortit donc, portant la couronne d'épines et le manteau de couleur pourpre. Pilate leur dit: «Voici l'homme.» 6 Lorsque les chefs des prêtres et les gardes le virent, ils s'écrièrent: «Crucifie-le! Crucifie-le!» Pilate leur dit: «Prenez-le vous-mêmes et crucifiez-le, car pour ma part, je ne trouve en lui aucun motif de le condamner.» 7 Les Juifs lui répondirent: «Nous avons une loi et, d'après notre loi, il doit mourir parce qu'il s'est fait Fils de Dieu.» 8 Quand il entendit cette parole, Pilate eut très peur. 9 Il rentra dans le prétoire et dit à Jésus: «D'où es-tu?» mais Jésus ne lui donna aucune réponse. 10 Pilate lui dit: «C'est à moi que tu refuses de parler? Ne sais-tu pas que j'ai le pouvoir de te relâcher et que j'ai le pouvoir de te crucifier?» 11 Jésus répondit: «Tu n'aurais aucun pouvoir sur moi s'il ne t'avait pas été donné d'en haut. C'est pourquoi celui qui me livre à toi est coupable d'un plus grand péché.» 12 Dès ce moment-là, Pilate chercha à le relâcher, mais les Juifs criaient: «Si tu le relâches, tu n'es pas l'ami de l'empereur. Tout homme qui se fait roi se déclare contre l'empereur.» 13 Après avoir entendu ces paroles, Pilate amena Jésus dehors et siégea au tribunal à l'endroit appelé «le Pavé», en hébreu Gabbatha. 14 C'était le jour de la préparation de la Pâque, il était environ midi. Pilate dit aux Juifs: «Voici votre roi.» 15 Ils s'écrièrent alors: «A mort! A mort! Crucifie-le!» Pilate leur dit: «Dois-je crucifier votre roi?» Les chefs des prêtres répondirent: «Nous n'avons pas d'autre roi que l'empereur.» 16 Alors il le leur livra pour qu'il soit crucifié. Ils prirent donc Jésus et l'emmenèrent.

Crucifixion et mort de Jésus

17 Jésus, portant sa croix, sortit de la ville pour aller vers l'endroit appelé «le Crâne», qui se dit en hébreu Golgotha. 18 C'est là qu'ils le crucifièrent, et avec lui deux autres, un de chaque côté et Jésus au milieu. 19 Pilate rédigea aussi un écriteau qu'il plaça sur la croix; il y était écrit: «Jésus de Nazareth, le roi des Juifs.» 20 Beaucoup de Juifs lurent cette inscription parce que l'endroit où Jésus fut crucifié était près de la ville. Elle était écrite en hébreu, en grec et en latin. 21 Les chefs des prêtres des Juifs dirent à Pilate: «N'écris pas: ‘Le roi des Juifs’, mais plutôt: ‘Cet homme a dit: Je suis le roi des Juifs.’» 22 Pilate répondit: «Ce que j'ai écrit, je l'ai écrit.» 23 Après avoir crucifié Jésus, les soldats prirent ses vêtements et en firent quatre parts, une pour chaque soldat. Ils prirent aussi sa tunique, qui était sans couture, d'une seule pièce depuis le haut jusqu'en bas. Ils se dirent entre eux: 24 «Ne la déchirons pas, mais tirons au sort pour savoir à qui elle sera.» C'est ainsi que s'accomplit cette parole de l'Ecriture: Ils se sont partagé mes vêtements et ils ont tiré au sort mon habit.* Voilà ce que firent les soldats. 25 Près de la croix de Jésus se tenaient sa mère, la sœur de sa mère, Marie la femme de Clopas et Marie de Magdala. 26 Jésus vit sa mère et, près d'elle, le disciple qu'il aimait. Il dit à sa mère: «Femme, voici ton fils.» 27 Puis il dit au disciple: «Voici ta mère.» Dès ce moment-là, le disciple la prit chez lui. 28 Après cela, Jésus, qui savait que tout était déjà accompli, dit, afin que l'Ecriture* se réalise pleinement: «J'ai soif.» 29 Il y avait là un vase plein de vinaigre. Les soldats en remplirent une éponge, la fixèrent à une branche d'hysope et l'approchèrent de sa bouche. 30 Quand Jésus eut pris le vinaigre, il dit: «Tout est accompli.» Puis il baissa la tête et rendit l'esprit. 31 C'était la préparation de la Pâque* et ce sabbat allait être un jour solennel. Craignant que les corps ne restent en croix pendant le sabbat, les Juifs demandèrent à Pilate qu'on brise les jambes aux crucifiés et qu'on enlève les corps. 32 Les soldats vinrent donc briser les jambes du premier, puis du second des condamnés qui avaient été crucifiés avec Jésus. 33 Quand ils s'approchèrent de lui, ils virent qu'il était déjà mort. Ils ne lui brisèrent pas les jambes, 34 mais un des soldats lui transperça le côté avec une lance et aussitôt il en sortit du sang et de l'eau. 35 Celui qui a vu ces choses en rend témoignage et son témoignage est vrai. Il sait qu'il dit la vérité afin que vous croyiez aussi. 36 En effet, cela est arrivé afin que ce passage de l'Ecriture soit accompli: Aucun de ses os ne sera brisé.* 37 Ailleurs l'Ecriture dit encore: Ils verront celui qu'ils ont transpercé.*

Mise au tombeau du corps de Jésus

38 Après cela, Joseph d'Arimathée, qui était disciple de Jésus, mais en secret par crainte des chefs juifs, demanda à Pilate la permission d'enlever le corps de Jésus. Pilate le lui permit. Il vint donc et enleva le corps de Jésus. 39 Nicodème, l'homme qui auparavant était allé trouver Jésus de nuit, vint aussi. Il apportait un mélange d'environ 30 kilos de myrrhe et d'aloès. 40 Ils prirent donc le corps de Jésus et l'enveloppèrent de bandelettes, avec les aromates, comme c'est la coutume d'ensevelir chez les Juifs. 41 Or, il y avait un jardin à l'endroit où Jésus avait été crucifié, et dans le jardin un tombeau neuf où personne encore n'avait été mis. 42 Ce fut là qu'ils déposèrent Jésus parce que c'était la préparation de la Pâque des Juifs et que le tombeau était proche.
