1This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, when King Zedekiah sent to him Pashhur the son of Malchiah and Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, saying,2“Inquire of the Lord for us, for Nebuchadnezzar* king of Babylon is making war against us. Perhaps the Lord will deal with us according to all his wonderful deeds and will make him withdraw from us.”3Then Jeremiah said to them: “Thus you shall say to Zedekiah,4‘Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: Behold, I will turn back the weapons of war that are in your hands and with which you are fighting against the king of Babylon and against the Chaldeans who are besieging you outside the walls. And I will bring them together into the midst of this city.5I myself will fight against you with outstretched hand and strong arm, in anger and in fury and in great wrath.6And I will strike down the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast. They shall die of a great pestilence.7Afterward, declares the Lord, I will give Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people in this city who survive the pestilence, sword, and famine into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of their enemies, into the hand of those who seek their lives. He shall strike them down with the edge of the sword. He shall not pity them or spare them or have compassion.’8“And to this people you shall say: ‘Thus says the Lord: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.9He who stays in this city shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, but he who goes out and surrenders to the Chaldeans who are besieging you shall live and shall have his life as a prize of war.10For I have set my face against this city for harm and not for good, declares the Lord: it shall be given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.’

11“And to the house of the king of Judah say, ‘Hear the word of the Lord,12O house of David! Thus says the Lord: “Execute justice in the morning, and deliver from the hand of the oppressor him who has been robbed, lest my wrath go forth like fire, and burn with none to quench it, because of your evil deeds.’”13“Behold, I am against you, O inhabitant of the valley, O rock of the plain, declares the Lord; you who say, ‘Who shall come down against us, or who shall enter our habitations?’14I will punish you according to the fruit of your deeds, declares the Lord; I will kindle a fire in her forest, and it shall devour all that is around her.”

Keine Rettung für Zidkija und Jerusalem
1Das Wort des HERRN erging an Jeremia, damals, als König Zidkija zwei Männer zu ihm schickte – Paschur, den Sohn von Malkija, und den Priester Zefanja, den Sohn von Maaseja – und ihm sagen ließ:2»Du weißt, dass Nebukadnezzar, der König von Babylonien, den Kampf gegen uns eröffnet hat. Frage doch den HERRN, was geschehen wird, ob er vielleicht ein Wunder tut wie in alten Zeiten und Nebukadnezzar zum Abzug zwingt.«3Jeremia gab dem König durch die beiden Abgesandten den Bescheid:4»So spricht der HERR, der Gott Israels: ›Das Heer des Königs von Babylonien hat euch eingeschlossen. Noch versuchen eure Truppen, den Angreifern außerhalb der Mauern Widerstand zu leisten. Aber ich werde dafür sorgen, dass sie sich in das Innere der Stadt zurückziehen müssen.5Denn ich selbst kämpfe gegen euch mit starker Hand und drohend erhobenem Arm und ihr sollt die ganze Glut meines Zorns zu spüren bekommen!6Alles, was in dieser Stadt lebt – Menschen und Vieh –, wird von einer verheerenden Pest heimgesucht werden.7Danach gebe ich Zidkija, den König von Juda, und seine hohen Beamten in die Gewalt Nebukadnezzars, des Königs von Babylonien, und dazu alle Bewohner der Stadt, die bis dahin noch nicht durch Pest, Krieg und Hunger umgekommen sind. Das sage ich, der HERR. Ich gebe euch in die Gewalt eurer Feinde, die euch töten wollen. Nebukadnezzar wird euch alle mit dem Schwert umbringen, schonungslos, ohne Mitleid und Erbarmen.‹«8Den Leuten von Jerusalem aber musste Jeremia ausrichten: »So spricht der HERR: ›Ich stelle euch vor die Wahl zwischen Leben und Tod:9Wer in dieser Stadt bleibt, wird durch Hunger oder Pest umkommen oder von den Feinden erschlagen werden; wer aber die Stadt verlässt und sich den Babyloniern ergibt, wird mit dem Leben davonkommen.10Denn ich bin entschlossen, Unglück über diese Stadt zu bringen und ihr nicht zu helfen‹, sagt der HERR. ›Sie wird in die Hand des Königs von Babylonien fallen und er wird sie in Schutt und Asche legen!‹«
Mahn- und Gerichtsworte an das Königshaus von Juda
11Jeremia bekam den Auftrag, dem Königshaus von Juda auszurichten:* »Hört das Wort, das der HERR euch sagen lässt,12ihr Nachkommen Davids! So spricht der HERR: ›Beginnt euren Tag damit, dass ihr gerechtes Urteil sprecht und die Beraubten aus der Hand ihrer Unterdrücker befreit! Sonst kommt mein Zorn über euch und brennt wie ein Feuer, das niemand löschen kann. Ihr habt zu viel Böses getan!13Passt auf‹, sagt der HERR, ›jetzt komme ich über euch, die ihr dort unten auf eurem Felsen wohnt!* Ihr behauptet, kein Feind könne bis zu euch hinabsteigen und bis in eure Gemächer vordringen.14Aber ich, ich selber, werde kommen und euch zur Rechenschaft ziehen für all das, was ihr getan habt‹, sagt der HERR. ›An den Wald von Zedernsäulen in euren Palästen werde ich Feuer legen, das wird alles ringsum vernichten!‹«
