La edificación del cuerpo

1 Yo, pues, el prisionero del Señor, os exhorto que andéis como es digno del llamamiento con que fuisteis llamados: 2 Con toda humildad y mansedumbre, soportándoos con longanimidad unos a otros en amor, 3 solícitos por guardar la unidad del Espíritu en el vínculo de la paz. 4 Un solo cuerpo y un solo Espíritu, como también fuisteis llamados con una misma esperanza de vuestro llamamiento: 5 Un solo Señor, una sola fe, un solo bautismo, 6 un solo Dios y Padre de todos, quien está sobre todos, a través de todos, y en todos. 7 A cada uno, entonces, nos fue dada la gracia según la medida del don del Mesías; 8 por lo cual dice: Subiendo a lo alto, tomó cautiva la cautividad, Dio dones a los hombres. 9 (Y eso de que subió, ¿qué significa, sino que también había descendido a las profundidades de la tierra? 10 El que descendió es el mismo que también ascendió por encima de todos los cielos para llenar todas las cosas.) 11 Y Él mismo dio: unos, apóstoles; otros, profetas; otros, evangelistas; y otros, pastores y maestros; 12 a fin de adiestrar a los santos para la obra del ministerio, para la edificación del cuerpo del Mesías, 13 hasta que todos lleguemos a la unidad de la fe y del conocimiento pleno del Hijo de Dios, a un varón perfecto, a la medida de la estatura de la plenitud del Mesías. 14 Para que ya no seamos niños fluctuantes, zarandeados por las olas, llevados a la deriva por todo viento de doctrina, por la astucia de hombres que emplean con maestría las artimañas del error; 15 sino que hablando la verdad en amor, crezcamos en todas las cosas en Aquel que es la cabeza: El Mesías, 16 de Él viene que el cuerpo entero, bien ajustado y unido por todos los ligamentos, según la función propia de cada uno de sus miembros, crezca y se edifique en el amor.

Una vida nueva

17 Esto pues digo y requiero en el Señor: que ya no viváis como viven los gentiles, en la futilidad de su mente, 18 teniendo el entendimiento entenebrecido, totalmente ajenos a la vida de Dios a causa de la ignorancia que hay en ellos, por la dureza de su corazón; 19 los cuales, después que llegaron a ser insensibles, se entregaron a sí mismos a la sensualidad, para practicar con avidez toda clase de impureza. 20 Pero vosotros no aprendisteis así al Mesías, 21 si en verdad lo oísteis y fuisteis enseñados en Él, conforme a la verdad que está en Jesús. 22 En cuanto a la antigua manera de vivir, despojaos del viejo hombre, que está corrompido por los deseos engañosos, 23 renovaos en el espíritu de vuestra mente, 24 vestidos ya del nuevo hombre, que fue creado según Dios en la justicia y santidad de la verdad. 25 Por tanto, desechando la mentira, cada uno hable verdad con su prójimo, porque somos miembros los unos de los otros. 26 Airaos, pero no pequéis; no se ponga el sol sobre vuestro enojo, 27 ni deis lugar al diablo. 28 El que hurtaba no hurte más, sino trabaje, haciendo con las propias manos lo bueno, para que tenga qué compartir con el que tiene necesidad. 29 Ninguna palabra dañina salga de vuestra boca, sino la que sea buena para la necesaria edificación, que comunique gracia a los oyentes. 30 Y no entristezcáis al Espíritu Santo de Dios, con el cual fuisteis sellados para el día de la redención. 31 Sea quitada de vosotros toda amargura y enojo, e ira, y grito airado y maledicencia, junto con toda maldad. 32 Sed bondadosos los unos con los otros, compasivos, perdonándoos los unos a los otros como también Dios os perdonó en el Mesías.

Unity in the Body of Christ

1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. 7 But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift. 8 Therefore it says, “When he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.”* 9 (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth?* 10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds* and teachers,* 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood,* to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

The New Life

17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self,* which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. 25 Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another. 26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and give no opportunity to the devil. 28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need. 29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
