Streit und Murren in Massa und Meriba. Wasser aus dem Felsen
1Und die ganze Gemeinde der Kinder Israels zog aus der Wüste Sin ihre Tagereisen, nach dem Befehl des HERRN, und sie lagerte sich in Rephidim; aber da hatte das Volk kein Wasser zu trinken. (2Mo 16,1; 4Mo 33,12)2Darum stritt das Volk mit Mose, und sie sprachen: Gebt uns Wasser, dass wir trinken! Mose sprach zu ihnen: Was streitet ihr mit mir? Warum versucht ihr den HERRN? (2Mo 17,7; 5Mo 6,16; Ps 78,18; Ps 78,41; Ps 95,8)3Als nun das Volk dort nach Wasser dürstete, da murrten sie gegen Mose und sprachen: Warum hast du uns aus Ägypten heraufgeführt, um uns und unsere Kinder und unser Vieh vor Durst sterben zu lassen? (2Mo 14,11; 2Mo 16,2)4Da schrie Mose zum HERRN und sprach: Was soll ich mit diesem Volk tun? Es fehlt nicht viel, und sie werden mich noch steinigen! (4Mo 14,10; 4Mo 16,19; 1Sam 30,6; Ps 50,15; Ps 99,6; Joh 8,59; Joh 10,31; Apg 7,57; Apg 14,19)5Und der HERR sprach zu Mose: Tritt hin vor das Volk und nimm etliche Älteste von Israel mit dir und nimm den Stab in deine Hand, mit dem du den Nil geschlagen hast, und geh hin. (2Mo 7,20; 4Mo 20,8)6Siehe, ich will dort vor dir auf dem Felsen am Horeb stehen; und du sollst den Felsen schlagen, und es wird Wasser herauslaufen, damit das Volk zu trinken hat. Und Mose tat dies vor den Augen der Ältesten Israels. (5Mo 8,15; Neh 9,15; Ps 105,41)7Da gab man dem Ort den Namen Massa und Meriba, wegen der Herausforderung der Kinder Israels, und weil sie den HERRN versucht und gesagt hatten: Ist der HERR in unserer Mitte oder nicht? (1Mo 28,16; 5Mo 4,7; Jos 22,31; Ps 95,8; Jes 12,6; Mi 3,11)
Israels Kampf gegen Amalek
8Da kam Amalek und kämpfte gegen Israel in Rephidim. (1Mo 36,12; 1Mo 36,16; 1Chr 4,43)9Und Mose sprach zu Josua[1]: Erwähle uns Männer und zieh aus, kämpfe gegen Amalek! Morgen will ich auf der Spitze des Hügels stehen, mit dem Stab Gottes in meiner Hand. (2Mo 4,20; 2Mo 33,11; 4Mo 13,8; 4Mo 13,16; Ri 7,4)10Und Josua machte es so, wie Mose ihm sagte, und er kämpfte gegen Amalek. Mose aber und Aaron und Hur stiegen auf die Spitze des Hügels. (2Mo 24,14)11Und es geschah, solange Mose seine Hand aufhob, hatte Israel die Oberhand; wenn er aber seine Hand sinken ließ, hatte Amalek die Oberhand. (Ps 44,5; Lk 18,11; Röm 15,30; Jak 5,16)12Aber die Hände Moses wurden schwer, darum nahmen sie einen Stein und legten den unter ihn, und er setzte sich darauf. Aaron aber und Hur stützten seine Hände, auf jeder Seite einer. So blieben seine Hände fest, bis die Sonne unterging. (Jos 8,26; Ps 69,4; Mt 26,40)13Und Josua überwältigte Amalek und sein Volk mit der Schärfe des Schwertes. (Jos 10,28; Jos 10,32; Jos 10,37; Jos 10,42; Jos 11,12)14Da sprach der HERR zu Mose: Schreibe das zum Gedenken in ein Buch und präge es den Ohren Josuas ein: Ich will das Andenken Amaleks ganz und gar austilgen unter dem Himmel! (4Mo 24,20; 5Mo 25,19)15Und Mose baute einen Altar und nannte ihn »Der HERR ist mein Kriegsbanner«. (Ps 60,6; Jes 11,10; Jes 18,3; Jes 49,22)16Und er sprach: Weil eine Hand [zum Schwur erhoben] ist auf dem Thron des HERRN, soll der Krieg des HERRN gegen Amalek währen von Geschlecht zu Geschlecht! (Hi 15,25; Jes 22,14; Jer 3,17; Jer 17,12; Sach 2,8; Mt 18,6)
1Auf den Befehl des HERRN hin verließen die Israeliten die Wüste Sin und zogen von Lagerplatz zu Lagerplatz. Schließlich schlugen sie ihr Lager in Refidim auf. Doch dort gab es kein Trinkwasser. (2Mo 16,1; 2Mo 19,2; 4Mo 33,15)2Da machten die Israeliten Mose Vorwürfe und forderten: »Gib uns Wasser zum Trinken!« »Warum macht ihr mir Vorwürfe?«, entgegnete Mose. »Und warum fordert ihr den HERRN heraus?« (2Mo 14,11; 4Mo 20,3; 5Mo 6,16; 1Kor 10,10)3Die Israeliten aber waren sehr durstig und sie beklagten sich bei Mose: »Warum hast du uns bloß aus Ägypten geführt? Etwa damit wir, unsere Kinder und unser Vieh verdursten?« (2Mo 16,2)4Da schrie Mose zum HERRN: »Was soll ich nur mit diesem Volk tun? Es fehlt nicht viel und sie steinigen mich!« (4Mo 14,10; 4Mo 16,19)5Der HERR entgegnete Mose: »Geh mit einigen führenden Männern der Israeliten vor dem Volk her. Nimm deinen Stab, mit dem du auf den Nil geschlagen hast, mit. (2Mo 7,20; 2Mo 14,16)6Ich werde auf einem Felsen am Horeb[1] vor dich treten. Schlag auf den Felsen. Dann wird Wasser herausströmen und das Volk wird trinken können.« Und Mose tat es vor den Augen der führenden Männer Israels. (4Mo 20,8; Ps 78,15; Ps 105,41; 1Kor 10,4)7Mose nannte den Ort Massa und Meriba[2], wegen der Vorwürfe der Israeliten. Sie hatten den HERRN herausgefordert, indem sie fragten: »Ist der HERR bei uns oder nicht?« (5Mo 6,16; 5Mo 9,22; Ps 81,8; Ps 95,8)
Israel besiegt die Amalekiter
8Als die Israeliten noch in Refidim lagerten, wurden sie von den Amalekitern angegriffen. (2Mo 36,12; 4Mo 24,20; 5Mo 25,17)9Mose befahl Josua: »Wähle dir Männer aus und kämpfe gegen das Heer von Amalek. Morgen werde ich mich mit dem Stab Gottes in der Hand auf den Hügel dort stellen.« (2Mo 24,13; 4Mo 11,28)10Josua tat, was Mose ihm gesagt hatte. Er führte seine Männer in den Kampf gegen die Amalekiter. In der Zwischenzeit stiegen Mose, Aaron und Hur auf den Hügel. (2Mo 24,14; 2Mo 31,2)11Solange Mose seinen Arm hochhielt, waren die Israeliten im Vorteil. Doch immer, wenn er seinen Arm sinken ließ, gewannen die Amalekiter die Oberhand.12Als nun Moses Arme schwer wurden, suchten Aaron und Hur ihm einen Stein, auf den er sich setzen konnte. Dann stützten sie seine Arme – der eine den linken und der andere den rechten. Auf diese Weise blieben seine Arme oben, bis die Sonne unterging. (Jes 35,3)13Deshalb gelang es Josua, das Heer von Amalek zu schlagen.14Dann wies der HERR Mose an: »Schreib dies zur Erinnerung auf und schärfe es Josua ein: Ich werde die Amalekiter vernichten, sodass sich niemand mehr an sie erinnern wird.« (2Mo 24,4; 2Mo 34,27; 4Mo 33,2)15Mose errichtete einen Altar und nannte ihn »Der HERR ist mein Banner«. (1Mo 22,14)16Er sagte: »Schwört dem HERRN Treue[3]! Der HERR führt Krieg gegen die Amalekiter von Generation zu Generation.«
1All the congregation of the people of Israel moved on from the wilderness of Sin by stages, according to the commandment of the Lord, and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. (2Mo 16,1; 4Mo 33,12; 4Mo 33,14)2Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?” (4Mo 20,3; 5Mo 6,16; Ps 78,18; Ps 78,41; Ps 95,8; Jes 7,12; Mt 4,7; 1Kor 10,9; Hebr 3,8)3But the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” (2Mo 15,24; 2Mo 16,2)4So Moses cried to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.” (4Mo 14,10; Jos 9,25; 1Sam 30,6; 1Kön 21,13; 2Chr 24,21; Mt 23,37; Lk 13,34; Joh 8,59; Joh 10,31; Joh 11,8; Apg 7,58; Apg 14,5; Apg 14,19; 2Kor 11,25; Hebr 11,37)5And the Lord said to Moses, “Pass on before the people, taking with you some of the elders of Israel, and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. (2Mo 7,20)6Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel. (4Mo 20,8; 5Mo 8,15; Neh 9,15; Ps 78,15; Ps 78,20; Ps 105,41; Ps 114,8; Jes 43,20; Jes 48,21; 1Kor 10,4)7And he called the name of the place Massah[1] and Meribah,[2] because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?” (4Mo 20,13; Ps 81,7; Ps 95,8)
Israel Defeats Amalek
8Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. (5Mo 25,17; 1Sam 15,2)9So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” (2Mo 4,20; 2Mo 24,13; 2Mo 32,17; 2Mo 33,11)10So Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. (2Mo 17,9; 2Mo 24,14; 2Mo 31,2)11Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. (1Tim 2,8)12But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. (2Mo 17,10)13And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword. (2Mo 17,9)14Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book and recite it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” (2Mo 17,9; 4Mo 24,20; 5Mo 25,19; 1Sam 15,3; 1Sam 15,7; 1Sam 30,1; 1Sam 30,17; 2Sam 8,12)15And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The Lord Is My Banner, (Ri 6,24)16saying, “A hand upon the throne[3] of the Lord! The Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.” (2Mo 17,14)
1The whole community of Israel started out from the Desert of Sin. They travelled from place to place, just as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim. But there wasn’t any water for the people to drink.2So they argued with Moses. They said, ‘Give us water to drink.’ Moses replied, ‘Why are you arguing with me? Why are you testing the LORD?’3But the people were thirsty for water there. So they told Moses they weren’t happy with him. They said, ‘Why did you bring us up out of Egypt? Did you want us, our children and our livestock to die of thirst?’4Then Moses cried out to the LORD. He said, ‘What am I going to do with these people? They are almost ready to kill me by throwing stones at me.’5The LORD answered Moses. ‘Go out in front of the people. Take some of the elders of Israel along with you. Take in your hand the walking stick you used when you struck the River Nile. Go.6I will stand there in front of you by the rock at Mount Horeb. Hit the rock. Then water will come out of it for the people to drink.’ So Moses hit the rock while the elders of Israel watched.7Moses called the place Massah and Meribah. That’s because the people of Israel argued with him there. They also tested the LORD. They asked, ‘Is the LORD among us or not?’
Joshua wins the battle over the Amalekites
8The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim.9Moses said to Joshua, ‘Choose some of our men. Then go out and fight against the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill. I’ll stand there holding the walking stick God gave me.’10So Joshua fought against the Amalekites, just as Moses had ordered. Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill.11As long as Moses held up his hand, the Israelites were winning. But every time he lowered his hands, the Amalekites began to win.12When Moses’ arms got tired, Aaron and Hur got a stone and put it under him. Then he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands. Aaron was on one side, and Hur was on the other. Moses’ hands remained steady until sunset.13So Joshua destroyed the Amalekite army with swords.14Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘This is something to be remembered. So write it on a scroll. Make sure Joshua knows you have done it. I will completely erase the memory of the Amalekites from the earth.’15Then Moses built an altar. He called it The LORD Is My Banner.16He said, ‘The Amalekites opposed the authority of the LORD. So the LORD will fight against the Amalekites for all time to come.’
