Mose warnt das Volk vor Selbstgerechtigkeit — Erinnerung an Israels Versagen und Moses Mittlerdienst
1Höre, Israel: Du wirst jetzt über den Jordan gehen, damit du hineinkommst, um Völker zu überwältigen, die größer und stärker sind als du, Städte, groß und himmelhoch befestigt, (5Mo 4,1; 5Mo 4,38; 5Mo 7,1; Jos 1,11)2ein großes und hochgewachsenes Volk, die Söhne der Enakiter, die du kennst, von denen du auch sagen gehört hast: Wer kann vor den Söhnen Enaks bestehen? (5Mo 1,28)3So sollst du heute wissen, dass der HERR, dein Gott, selbst vor dir hergeht, ein verzehrendes Feuer. Er wird sie vertilgen und sie vor dir unterwerfen, und du wirst sie aus ihrem Besitz vertreiben und schnell ausrotten, so wie der HERR es dir verheißen hat. (2Mo 23,23; 5Mo 4,24; 5Mo 7,22; Jos 3,11; Hes 20,5)4Wenn sie nun der HERR, dein Gott, vor dir her ausgestoßen hat, so sprich nicht in deinem Herzen: Um meiner Gerechtigkeit willen hat der HERR mich hereingebracht, dass ich dieses Land in Besitz nehme!, da doch der HERR diese Heidenvölker wegen ihrer Gottlosigkeit vor dir her aus ihrem Besitz vertreibt. (1Mo 15,16; 3Mo 18,24; 5Mo 8,17; Jer 17,9; Röm 11,20)5Denn nicht um deiner Gerechtigkeit und um deines aufrichtigen Herzens willen kommst du hinein, um ihr Land in Besitz zu nehmen, sondern wegen ihrer Gottlosigkeit vertreibt der HERR, dein Gott, diese Heidenvölker aus ihrem Besitz, und damit er das Wort aufrechterhalte, das der HERR deinen Vätern Abraham, Isaak und Jakob geschworen hat. (5Mo 1,8)6So sollst du nun erkennen, dass der HERR, dein Gott, dir dieses gute Land nicht um deiner Gerechtigkeit willen gibt, damit du es in Besitz nimmst; denn du bist ein halsstarriges Volk! (2Mo 32,9; Ps 78,8)7Denke doch daran und vergiss es nicht, wie du den HERRN, deinen Gott, in der Wüste erzürnt hast! Von dem Tag an, als du aus dem Land Ägypten ausgezogen bist, bis zu eurer Ankunft an diesem Ort seid ihr widerspenstig gewesen gegen den HERRN. (5Mo 8,2; Ps 78,40; Ps 95,10)8Und am Horeb erzürntet ihr den HERRN, und der HERR ergrimmte über euch, sodass er euch vertilgen wollte. (2Mo 32,1; Ps 106,19)9Als ich auf den Berg gegangen war, um die steinernen Tafeln zu empfangen, die Tafeln des Bundes, den der HERR mit euch machte, da blieb ich 40 Tage und 40 Nächte lang auf dem Berg und aß kein Brot und trank kein Wasser. (2Mo 24,12; 2Mo 34,28)10Da gab mir der HERR die zwei steinernen Tafeln, mit dem Finger Gottes beschrieben, und darauf alle Worte, die der HERR mit euch auf dem Berg geredet hat, mitten aus dem Feuer, am Tag der Versammlung. (2Mo 31,18; 5Mo 4,13; 5Mo 5,22)11Und es geschah nach 40 Tagen und 40 Nächten, da gab mir der HERR die zwei steinernen Tafeln, die Tafeln des Bundes. (5Mo 9,9)12Und der HERR sprach zu mir: Mache dich auf und geh schnell hinab von hier; denn dein Volk, das du aus Ägypten herausgeführt hast, hat Verderben angerichtet. Sie sind von dem Weg, den ich ihnen geboten habe, schnell abgewichen; sie haben sich ein gegossenes Bild gemacht! (2Mo 32,7; 5Mo 9,26; 5Mo 9,29)13Und der HERR sprach so zu mir: Ich habe dieses Volk beobachtet, und siehe, es ist ein halsstarriges Volk! (5Mo 9,6)14Lass ab von mir, damit ich sie vertilge und ihren Namen unter dem Himmel auslösche! Ich will aus dir ein stärkeres und größeres Volk machen, als es dieses ist! (2Mo 32,9; 4Mo 14,12)15Als ich mich nun umwandte und von dem Berg herabstieg — der Berg aber brannte im Feuer —, und die zwei Tafeln des Bundes in meinen beiden Händen hatte, (2Mo 24,17; 5Mo 5,23)16da schaute ich, und siehe, ihr hattet euch an dem HERRN, eurem Gott, versündigt, indem ihr euch ein gegossenes Kalb gemacht hattet, und ihr wart schnell von dem Weg abgewichen, den der HERR euch geboten hatte. (2Mo 32,19; Apg 7,40)17Da ergriff ich die beiden Tafeln und warf sie aus meinen beiden Händen und zerbrach sie vor euren Augen; (2Mo 32,15)18und ich fiel vor dem HERRN nieder wie zuerst, 40 Tage und 40 Nächte lang, aß kein Brot und trank kein Wasser um aller eurer Sünden willen, die ihr begangen hattet, indem ihr tatet, was böse ist in den Augen des HERRN, um ihn zu reizen. (2Mo 34,28; 5Mo 9,25)19Denn ich fürchtete mich vor dem Zorn und Grimm, mit dem der HERR über euch so sehr erzürnt war, dass er euch vertilgen wollte. Und der HERR erhörte mich auch diesmal. (2Mo 32,14; 2Mo 33,17; 5Mo 10,10; Ps 106,23; Lk 12,5; Lk 13,8; Hebr 10,31)20Auch über Aaron war der HERR sehr zornig, sodass er ihn vertilgen wollte; aber ich betete auch für Aaron zu jener Zeit. (2Mo 32,2; 2Mo 32,21)21Doch eure Sünde, das Kalb, das ihr gemacht hattet, nahm ich und verbrannte es mit Feuer und zerschlug es und zermalmte es völlig, bis es zu feinem Staub wurde, und ich warf seinen Staub in den Bach, der von dem Berg herabfließt. (2Mo 32,20; 2Chr 34,4)22Auch in Tabeera und in Massa und bei den Lustgräbern erzürntet ihr den HERRN. (2Mo 17,2; 2Mo 17,7; 4Mo 11,1; 4Mo 11,4; 4Mo 11,34)23Und als der HERR euch aus Kadesch-Barnea sandte und sprach: Geht hinauf und nehmt das Land in Besitz, das ich euch gegeben habe!, da wart ihr gegen den Befehl des HERRN, eures Gottes, widerspenstig und glaubtet ihm nicht und gehorchtet seiner Stimme nicht. (4Mo 13,1)24Denn ihr seid widerspenstig gewesen gegen den HERRN, von dem Tag an, da ich euch kenne! (5Mo 9,6; 5Mo 31,27; Apg 7,51)25Als ich nun vor dem HERRN niederfiel jene 40 Tage und 40 Nächte lang — ich lag da, weil der HERR gesagt hatte, er wolle euch vertilgen —, (5Mo 9,18)26da flehte ich zum HERRN und sprach: Ach, Herr, HERR, verdirb dein Volk und dein Erbteil nicht, das du durch deine große Kraft erlöst und mit starker Hand aus Ägypten herausgeführt hast! (2Mo 32,11; 1Kön 8,51)27Gedenke an deine Knechte Abraham, Isaak und Jakob! Sieh nicht die Hartnäckigkeit dieses Volkes an und seine Gottlosigkeit und seine Sünde, (2Mo 32,13; 2Mo 32,31; 3Mo 26,42; Ps 105,8; Ps 130,3; Mi 7,18)28damit man in dem Land, aus dem du uns geführt hast, nicht sagt: Weil der HERR sie nicht in das Land bringen konnte, das er ihnen versprochen hatte, und weil er sie hasste, hat er sie herausgeführt, um sie in der Wüste sterben zu lassen! (2Mo 32,12; 4Mo 14,16; Jos 7,7)29Sie sind ja dein Volk und dein Erbteil, das du herausgeführt hast mit deiner großen Kraft und mit deinem ausgestreckten Arm! (4Mo 13,32)3So sollst du nun heute wissen, dass der HERR, dein Gott, vor dir hergeht, ein verzehrendes Feuer. Er wird sie vertilgen und wird sie demütigen vor dir, und du wirst sie vertreiben und bald vernichten, wie dir der HERR zugesagt hat. (5Mo 4,24)4Wenn nun der HERR, dein Gott, sie ausgestoßen hat vor dir her, so sprich nicht in deinem Herzen: Der HERR hat mich hereingeführt, dies Land einzunehmen, um meiner Gerechtigkeit willen –, da doch der HERR diese Völker vertreibt vor dir her um ihres gottlosen Treibens willen. (1Mo 15,16; 5Mo 8,17)5Denn du kommst nicht herein, ihr Land einzunehmen, um deiner Gerechtigkeit und deines aufrichtigen Herzens willen, sondern der HERR, dein Gott, vertreibt diese Völker um ihres gottlosen Treibens willen, damit er das Wort halte, das er geschworen hat deinen Vätern Abraham, Isaak und Jakob. (5Mo 6,25)6So wisse nun, dass der HERR, dein Gott, dir nicht um deiner Gerechtigkeit willen dies gute Land zum Besitz gibt, da du doch ein halsstarriges Volk bist. (2Mo 32,9)
Der Bundesbruch am Horeb
7Denke daran und vergiss nicht, wie du den HERRN, deinen Gott, erzürntest in der Wüste. Von dem Tage an, als du aus Ägyptenland zogst, bis ihr gekommen seid an diesen Ort, seid ihr ungehorsam gewesen dem HERRN.8Denn am Horeb erzürntet ihr den HERRN so, dass er vor Zorn euch vertilgen wollte, (2Mo 32,1)9als ich auf den Berg gegangen war, die steinernen Tafeln zu empfangen, die Tafeln des Bundes, den der HERR mit euch schloss, und ich vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte auf dem Berge blieb und kein Brot aß und kein Wasser trank (2Mo 34,28)10und mir der HERR die zwei steinernen Tafeln gab, mit dem Finger Gottes beschrieben, und darauf alle Worte, die der HERR mit euch aus dem Feuer auf dem Berge geredet hatte am Tage der Versammlung.11Und nach den vierzig Tagen und vierzig Nächten gab mir der HERR die zwei steinernen Tafeln, die Tafeln des Bundes,12und sprach zu mir: Mach dich auf, geh eilends hinab von hier; denn dein Volk, das du aus Ägypten geführt hast, hat schändlich gehandelt. (5Mo 18,1)26Und ich bat den HERRN und sprach: Herr HERR, verdirb dein Volk und dein Erbe nicht, das du durch deine große Kraft erlöst und mit mächtiger Hand aus Ägypten geführt hast!27Gedenke an deine Knechte Abraham, Isaak und Jakob! Sieh nicht an die Halsstarrigkeit und das gottlose Treiben und die Sünde dieses Volks,28damit das Land, aus dem du uns geführt hast, nicht sage: Der HERR konnte sie nicht in das Land bringen, das er ihnen zugesagt hatte, und hat sie darum herausgeführt, weil er ihnen feind war, um sie zu töten in der Wüste. (4Mo 14,16)29Denn sie sind dein Volk und dein Erbe, das du mit deiner großen Kraft und mit deinem ausgereckten Arm herausgeführt hast.
1Höre, Israel! Heute wirst du den Jordan überschreiten, um in das Land von Völkern, die größer und mächtiger sind als du, hineinzuziehen und ihren Besitz zu übernehmen. Du wirst in große Städte mit himmelhohen Mauern kommen, (5Mo 1,28; 5Mo 4,38; 5Mo 5,1; 5Mo 6,4)2zu einem großen, hochgewachsenen Volk, den Anakitern - du kennst ja die Redensart und hast sie oft gehört: Wer kann den Söhnen Anaks widerstehen?3Heute wirst du erkennen, dass der HERR, dein Gott, wie ein verzehrendes Feuer selbst vor dir hinüberzieht. Er wird sie vernichten und er wird sie dir unterwerfen, sodass du sie unverzüglich ausrotten und austilgen kannst, wie es der HERR dir zugesagt hat. (5Mo 31,3)4Wenn der HERR, dein Gott, sie vor dir herjagt, sollst du nicht meinen: Ich bin im Recht, daher lässt mich der HERR in das Land hineinziehen und es in Besitz nehmen; diese Völker sind im Unrecht, daher rottet sie der HERR vor mir aus. (5Mo 6,18; 5Mo 6,25; 5Mo 8,17; Hes 18,5; Röm 10,3; Röm 10,6)5Denn nicht, weil du im Recht bist und die richtige Gesinnung hast, kannst du in ihr Land hineinziehen und es in Besitz nehmen. Vielmehr rottet der HERR, dein Gott, diese Völker vor dir aus, weil sie im Unrecht sind und weil der HERR die Zusage einlösen will, die er deinen Vätern Abraham, Isaak und Jakob mit einem Schwur bekräftigt hat. (5Mo 1,8)6Du sollst erkennen: Du bist ein hartnäckiges Volk. Daher kann dir der HERR, dein Gott, dieses prächtige Land nicht etwa aufgrund eines Rechtsanspruchs geben, damit du es in Besitz nimmst. (2Mo 32,9; 2Mo 33,3; 2Mo 34,9; 5Mo 9,13; 5Mo 10,16; 5Mo 31,27; 2Kön 17,14; Jer 7,26; Apg 7,51)7Denk daran und vergiss nicht, dass du in der Wüste den Unwillen des HERRN, deines Gottes, erregt hast. Von dem Tag an, als du aus Ägypten auszogst, bis zur Ankunft an diesem Ort habt ihr euch dem HERRN ständig widersetzt. (4Mo 20,10; 5Mo 1,26; 5Mo 9,23; Ps 78,17; Hes 20,8)8Vor allem am Horeb habt ihr den Unwillen des HERRN erregt. Damals grollte er euch so sehr, dass er euch vernichten wollte.
Krise und Vollendung des Bundesschlusses am Horeb
9Als ich auf den Berg gestiegen war, um die Steintafeln entgegenzunehmen, die Tafeln des Bundes, den der HERR mit euch geschlossen hatte, blieb ich vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte auf dem Berg, aß kein Brot und trank kein Wasser. (2Mo 24,18; 5Mo 5,22; Mt 4,2)10Der HERR übergab mir die beiden Steintafeln, die mit dem Gottesfinger beschrieben waren. Auf den Tafeln standen alle die Worte, die der HERR am Tag der Versammlung auf dem Berg mitten aus dem Feuer zu euch gesprochen hatte. (2Mo 31,18; 5Mo 5,22)11Es war am Ende der vierzig Tage und der vierzig Nächte, als mir der HERR die beiden Steintafeln, die Tafeln des Bundes, übergab12und zu mir sagte: Steh auf, steig rasch hinunter, weg von hier; denn dein Volk, das du aus Ägypten geführt hast, läuft ins Verderben. Sie sind rasch von dem Weg abgewichen, auf den ich sie verpflichtet habe. Sie haben sich ein Bildnis gegossen. (2Mo 32,7; 2Mo 34,17; 5Mo 27,15; 5Mo 31,29; Ri 17,3; 1Kön 14,9; 2Kön 17,16)13Weiter sagte der HERR zu mir: Ich habe mir dieses Volk angesehen. Ja, es ist ein hartnäckiges Volk. (5Mo 9,6)14Lass mich, damit ich sie vernichte, ihren Namen unter dem Himmel auslösche und dich zu einem Volk mache, das mächtiger und zahlreicher als dieses ist!15Ich wandte mich um und stieg den Berg hinunter. Der Berg stand in Feuer. Ich trug die beiden Tafeln des Bundes auf meinen Armen.16Und ich sah, was geschehen war: Ja, ihr hattet euch an dem HERRN, eurem Gott, versündigt, ihr hattet euch ein Kalb gegossen, ihr wart rasch von dem Weg abgewichen, auf den der HERR euch verpflichtet hatte.17Ich packte die beiden Tafeln, die ich auf meinen Armen trug, schleuderte sie fort und zerschmetterte sie vor euren Augen.18Dann warf ich mich vor dem HERRN wie beim ersten Mal nieder. Vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte aß ich kein Brot und trank kein Wasser, wegen all der Sünde, die ihr begangen hattet, indem ihr tatet, was in den Augen des HERRN böse ist, sodass ihr ihn erzürntet.19Denn ich hatte Angst vor dem glühenden Zorn des HERRN. Er war voll Unwillen gegen euch und wollte euch vernichten. Doch der HERR erhörte mich auch diesmal.20Auch dem Aaron grollte der HERR sehr und er wollte ihn vernichten. Damals betete ich auch für Aaron.21Ich nahm das Kalb, die Sünde, die ihr euch gemacht hattet, verbrannte es im Feuer, zerstieß es und zermahlte es vollständig, bis es feiner Staub war; den Staub streute ich in den Bach, der vom Berg herunterfließt. (2Mo 32,20; 1Kön 12,30; 1Kön 15,13; 2Kön 11,18; 2Kön 18,4; 2Kön 23,4)22Auch in Tabera, in Massa und in Kibrot-Taawa habt ihr den Unwillen des HERRN erregt. (2Mo 17,1; 4Mo 11,1)23Als der HERR euch von Kadesch-Barnea aussandte mit dem Befehl: Zieht hinauf und nehmt das Land in Besitz, das ich euch gebe!, da habt ihr euch dem Befehl des HERRN, eures Gottes, widersetzt, ihr habt ihm nicht geglaubt und nicht auf seine Stimme gehört. (5Mo 1,19)24Ihr habt euch dem HERRN widersetzt, seit ich euch kenne. (5Mo 9,7)25Ich warf mich also vor dem HERRN nieder und lag vor ihm vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte lang. Ich warf mich nieder, weil der HERR gedroht hatte, er werde euch vernichten.26Ich betete zum HERRN und sagte: Herr und GOTT, bring nicht das Verderben über dein Volk und deinen Erbbesitz, die du in deiner Macht freigekauft und mit starker Hand aus Ägypten geführt hast! (2Mo 32,11; 4Mo 14,13)27Denk an deine Knechte, an Abraham, Isaak und Jakob! Beachte nicht den Starrsinn dieses Volkes, sein Verschulden und seine Sünde,28damit man nicht in dem Land, aus dem du uns geführt hast, sagt: Offenbar kann der HERR sie nicht in das Land führen, das er ihnen zugesagt hat, oder er hasst sie; also hat er sie nur herausgeführt, um sie in der Wüste sterben zu lassen. (2Mo 3,8; 5Mo 1,27)29Sie sind aber doch dein Volk und dein Erbbesitz, die du mit großer Kraft und hoch erhobenem Arm herausgeführt hast. (5Mo 4,20; 1Kön 8,51)

The Golden Calf
13“Furthermore, the LORD said to me, ‘I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stubborn people. (2Mo 32,9; 5Mo 6,1)14Let me alone, that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven. And I will make of you a nation mightier and greater than they.’ (2Mo 17,14; 2Mo 32,10; 4Mo 14,12; 5Mo 7,24; 5Mo 25,19; 5Mo 29,20)15So I turned and came down from the mountain, and the mountain was burning with fire. You had made yourselves a golden[1] calf. You had turned aside quickly from the way that the LORD had commanded you. 1Hear, Israel: you are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky.2The people are strong and tall – Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: ‘Who can stand up against the Anakites?’3But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a devouring fire. He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly, as the Lord has promised you.4After the Lord your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself, ‘The Lord has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.’ No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is going to drive them out before you.5It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.6Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people.
The golden calf
7Remember this and never forget how you aroused the anger of the Lord your God in the wilderness. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the Lord.8At Horeb you aroused the Lord’s wrath so that he was angry enough to destroy you.9When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the Lord had made with you, I stayed on the mountain for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water.10The Lord gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God. On them were all the commandments the Lord proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly.11At the end of the forty days and forty nights, the Lord gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant.12Then the Lord told me, ‘Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. They have turned away quickly from what I commanded them and have made an idol for themselves.’13And the Lord said to me, ‘I have seen this people, and they are a stiff-necked people indeed!14Let me alone, so that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven. And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they.’15So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands.16When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you.17So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.18Then once again I fell prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all the sin you had committed, doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and so arousing his anger.19I feared the anger and wrath of the Lord, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. But again the Lord listened to me.20And the Lord was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too.21Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain.22You also made the Lord angry at Taberah, at Massah and at Kibroth Hattaavah.23And when the Lord sent you out from Kadesh Barnea, he said, ‘Go up and take possession of the land I have given you.’ But you rebelled against the command of the Lord your God.
