de Société Biblique de Genève1Ils arrivèrent sur l'autre rive du lac, dans le pays des Gadaréniens.2Dès que Jésus fut hors de la barque, un homme vint à sa rencontre; il sortait des tombeaux et il était animé par un esprit impur.3Cet homme habitait dans les tombeaux, et personne ne pouvait plus l'attacher, même avec une chaîne.4En effet, souvent on l'avait attaché avec des fers aux pieds et des chaînes, mais il avait cassé les chaînes et brisé les fers, et personne n'avait la force de le maîtriser.5Il était sans cesse, nuit et jour, dans les tombeaux et sur les montagnes; il criait et se blessait lui-même avec des pierres.6Il vit Jésus de loin, accourut, se prosterna devant lui7et s'écria d'une voix forte: «Que me veux-tu, Jésus, Fils du Dieu très-haut? Je t'en supplie au nom de Dieu, ne me tourmente pas.»8En effet, Jésus lui disait: «Sors de cet homme, esprit impur!»9Il lui demanda: «Quel est ton nom?» «Mon nom est légion, car nous sommes nombreux», répondit-il.10Et il le suppliait avec insistance de ne pas les envoyer hors du pays.11Il y avait là, vers la montagne, un grand troupeau de porcs en train de chercher à manger.12Tous les démons le supplièrent: «Envoie-nous dans ces porcs afin que nous entrions en eux.»13Il le leur permit [aussitôt]. Les esprits impurs sortirent de l'homme, entrèrent dans les porcs, et le troupeau se précipita du haut de la falaise dans le lac; il y avait environ 2000 porcs, et ils se noyèrent dans le lac.14Les gardiens du troupeau s'enfuirent et allèrent le raconter dans la ville et dans les campagnes. Les gens allèrent voir ce qui était arrivé.15Ils vinrent vers Jésus et virent le démoniaque, celui qui avait eu la légion de démons, assis, habillé et dans son bon sens; et ils furent saisis de frayeur.16Ceux qui avaient été témoins de la scène leur racontèrent ce qui était arrivé au démoniaque et aux porcs.17Alors ils se mirent à supplier Jésus de quitter leur territoire.18Comme il montait dans la barque, celui qui avait été démoniaque le suppliait, demandant à l'accompagner.19Jésus ne le lui permit pas mais lui dit: «Va dans ta maison, vers les tiens, et raconte-leur tout ce que le Seigneur a fait pour toi, comment il a eu pitié de toi.»20Il s'en alla et se mit à proclamer dans la Décapole tout ce que Jésus avait fait pour lui. Et tous étaient dans l'étonnement.
Guérison d'une femme et résurrection d'une fillette
21Jésus regagna en barque l'autre rive, où une grande foule se rassembla autour de lui. Il était au bord du lac.22Alors vint un des chefs de la synagogue, du nom de Jaïrus. Lorsqu'il aperçut Jésus, il se jeta à ses pieds23et le supplia avec insistance: «Ma petite fille est sur le point de mourir. Viens, pose les mains sur elle afin qu'elle soit sauvée, et elle vivra.»24Jésus s'en alla avec lui. Une grande foule le suivait et le pressait de tous côtés.25Or, il y avait une femme atteinte d'hémorragies depuis 12 ans.26Elle avait beaucoup souffert entre les mains de nombreux médecins. Elle avait dépensé tout ce qu'elle possédait, mais cela n'avait servi à rien; au contraire, son état avait plutôt empiré.27Elle entendit parler de Jésus, vint dans la foule par-derrière et toucha son vêtement,28car elle se disait: «Même si je ne touche que ses vêtements, je serai guérie.»29A l'instant même, son hémorragie s'arrêta, et elle sentit dans son corps qu'elle était guérie de son mal.30Jésus se rendit aussitôt compte qu'une force était sortie de lui; il se retourna au milieu de la foule et dit: «Qui a touché mes vêtements?»31Ses disciples lui dirent: «Tu vois la foule qui te presse et tu dis: ‘Qui m'a touché?’»32Jésus regardait autour de lui pour voir celle qui avait fait cela.33La femme, effrayée et tremblante, sachant ce qui lui était arrivé, vint se jeter à ses pieds et lui dit toute la vérité.34Alors il lui dit: «Ma fille, ta foi t'a sauvée. Pars dans la paix et sois guérie de ton mal.»35Il parlait encore quand des gens arrivèrent de chez le chef de la synagogue et lui dirent: «Ta fille est morte. Pourquoi déranger encore le maître?»36Dès qu'il entendit cette parole, Jésus dit au chef de la synagogue: «N'aie pas peur, crois seulement.»37Et il ne laissa personne l'accompagner, sauf Pierre, Jacques et Jean, le frère de Jacques.38Ils arrivèrent à la maison du chef de la synagogue où Jésus vit du tumulte, des gens qui pleuraient et poussaient de grands cris.39Il entra et leur dit: «Pourquoi faites-vous ce tumulte et pourquoi pleurez-vous? L'enfant n'est pas morte, mais elle dort.»40Ils se moquaient de lui. Alors il les fit tous sortir, prit avec lui le père et la mère de l'enfant et ceux qui l'avaient accompagné, et il entra là où l'enfant était [couchée].41Il la prit par la main et lui dit: «Talitha koumi», ce qui signifie: «Jeune fille, lève-toi, je te le dis».42Aussitôt la jeune fille se leva et se mit à marcher, car elle avait 12 ans. Ils furent [aussitôt] remplis d'un grand étonnement.43Jésus leur adressa de fortes recommandations pour que personne ne le sache et demanda qu'on donne à manger à la jeune fille.
1They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.[1]2When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him.3This man lived in the tombs, and no-one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain.4For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No-one was strong enough to subdue him.5Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.6When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him.7He shouted at the top of his voice, ‘What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God’s name don’t torture me!’8For Jesus had said to him, ‘Come out of this man, you impure spirit!’9Then Jesus asked him, ‘What is your name?’ ‘My name is Legion,’ he replied, ‘for we are many.’10And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.11A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside.12The demons begged Jesus, ‘Send us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.’13He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.14Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened.15When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid.16Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed man – and told about the pigs as well.17Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.18As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him.19Jesus did not let him, but said, ‘Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.’20So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[2] how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
Jesus raises a dead girl and heals a sick woman
21When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered round him while he was by the lake.22Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet.23He pleaded earnestly with him, ‘My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.’24So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed round him.25And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.26She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.27When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,28because she thought, ‘If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.’29Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.30At once Jesus realised that power had gone out from him. He turned round in the crowd and asked, ‘Who touched my clothes?’31‘You see the people crowding against you,’ his disciples answered, ‘and yet you can ask, “Who touched me?” ’32But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.33Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.34He said to her, ‘Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.’35While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. ‘Your daughter is dead,’ they said. ‘Why bother the teacher anymore?’36Overhearing[3] what they said, Jesus told him, ‘Don’t be afraid; just believe.’37He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.38When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.39He went in and said to them, ‘Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.’40But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.41He took her by the hand and said to her, ‘Talitha koum!’ (which means ‘Little girl, I say to you, get up!’).42Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.43He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
