L'amour de Dieu pour Israël

1 Message, parole de l'Eternel adressée à Israël par l'intermédiaire de Malachie. 2 Je vous ai aimés, dit l'Eternel, et vous dites: «En quoi nous as-tu aimés?» Esaü n'est-il pas le frère de Jacob? déclare l'Eternel. Cependant j'ai aimé Jacob 3 et j'ai détesté Esaü^[1]: j'ai livré ses montagnes à la dévastation, son héritage aux chacals du désert. (Rm 9:13) 4 Si Edom prétend: «Nous sommes détruits, mais nous relèverons les ruines», voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers: «Qu'ils construisent! Je démolirai et on les appellera ‘pays de la méchanceté’, ‘peuple contre lequel l'Eternel est irrité pour toujours’.» 5 Vos yeux le verront, et vous direz: «L'Eternel est grand, même en dehors des frontières d'Israël!»

Le culte

6 Un fils honore son père, et un serviteur son maître. Si je suis père, où est l'honneur qui me revient? Si je suis maître, où est la crainte qui m'est due? dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, à vous, les prêtres, qui méprisez mon nom et qui dites: «En quoi avons-nous méprisé ton nom?» 7 Vous offrez sur mon autel des aliments impurs et vous dites: «En quoi t'avons-nous souillé?» C'est en disant: «La table de l'Eternel est dérisoire.» 8 Quand vous offrez en sacrifice une bête aveugle, n'est-ce pas mal? Quand vous offrez une bête boiteuse ou malade, n'est-ce pas mal? Offre-la donc à ton gouverneur! Te recevra-t-il bien, te fera-t-il bon accueil? dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers. 9 Et maintenant, priez Dieu pour qu'il ait pitié de nous! C'est de vous que cela vient: vous recevra-t-il favorablement? dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers. 10 Lequel de vous fermera les portes pour que vous n'allumiez plus inutilement le feu sur mon autel? Je ne prends aucun plaisir en vous, dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, et je n'accepte pas les offrandes de votre main. 11 En effet, du soleil levant au soleil couchant, mon nom est grand parmi les nations, et partout on fait brûler de l'encens en l'honneur de mon nom, on présente des offrandes pures. Oui, mon nom est grand parmi les nations, dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, 12 mais vous, vous le déshonorez en déclarant: «La table de l'Eternel est souillée, et ce qu'elle rapporte est une nourriture dérisoire.» 13 Vous dites: «Quel ennui!» et vous la dédaignez, dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers. Cependant vous amenez des bêtes volées, boiteuses ou malades. Voilà les offrandes que vous faites! Puis-je les accepter de vos mains? dit l'Eternel. 14 Maudit soit le tricheur qui a dans son troupeau un mâle et qui offre et sacrifie au Seigneur une bête en mauvais état, car je suis un grand roi, dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, et mon nom est craint parmi les nations.

Israel doubts God’s love

2 ‘I have loved you,’ says the Lord. ‘But you ask, “How have you loved us?” ‘Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?’ declares the Lord. ‘Yet I have loved Jacob, 3 but Esau I have hated, and I have turned his hill country into a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.’ 4 Edom may say, ‘Though we have been crushed, we will rebuild the ruins.’ But this is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘They may build, but I will demolish. They will be called the Wicked Land, a people always under the wrath of the Lord. 5 You will see it with your own eyes and say, “Great is the Lord – even beyond the borders of Israel!”

Breaking covenant through blemished sacrifices

6 ‘A son honours his father, and a slave his master. If I am a father, where is the honour due to me? If I am a master, where is the respect due to me?’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘It is you priests who show contempt for my name. ‘But you ask, “How have we shown contempt for your name?” 7 ‘By offering defiled food on my altar. ‘But you ask, “How have we defiled you?” ‘By saying that the Lord’s table is contemptible. 8 When you offer blind animals for sacrifice, is that not wrong? When you sacrifice lame or diseased animals, is that not wrong? Try offering them to your governor! Would he be pleased with you? Would he accept you?’ says the Lord Almighty. 9 ‘Now plead with God to be gracious to us. With such offerings from your hands, will he accept you?’ – says the Lord Almighty. 10 ‘Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would not light useless fires on my altar! I am not pleased with you,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and I will accept no offering from your hands. 11 My name will be great among the nations, from where the sun rises to where it sets. In every place incense and pure offerings will be brought to me, because my name will be great among the nations,’ says the Lord Almighty. 12 ‘But you profane it by saying, “The Lord’s table is defiled,” and, “Its food is contemptible.” 13 And you say, “What a burden!” and you sniff at it contemptuously,’ says the Lord Almighty. ‘When you bring injured, lame or diseased animals and offer them as sacrifices, should I accept them from your hands?’ says the Lord. 14 ‘Cursed is the cheat who has an acceptable male in his flock and vows to give it, but then sacrifices a blemished animal to the Lord. For I am a great king,’ says the Lord Almighty, ‘and my name is to be feared among the nations.
