1Jésus, rempli du Saint-Esprit, revint du Jourdain. Il fut conduit par l'Esprit dans le désert2où il fut tenté par le diable pendant 40 jours. Il ne mangea rien durant ces jours-là et, quand cette période fut passée, il eut faim.3Le diable lui dit: «Si tu es le Fils de Dieu, ordonne à cette pierre de devenir du pain.»4Jésus lui répondit: «Il est écrit: L'homme ne vivra pas de pain seulement [mais de toute parole de Dieu].[1]» (Dt 8:3)5Le diable l'emmena plus haut, [sur une haute montagne,] et lui montra en un instant tous les royaumes de la terre.6Puis il lui dit: «Je te donnerai toute cette puissance et la gloire de ces royaumes, car elle m'a été donnée et je la donne à qui je veux.7Si donc tu te prosternes devant moi, elle sera toute à toi.»8Jésus lui répondit: «[Retire-toi, Satan! En effet,] il est écrit: C'est le Seigneur, ton Dieu, que tu adoreras et c'est lui seul que tu serviras.[2]» (Dt 6:13)9Le diable le conduisit encore à Jérusalem, le plaça au sommet du temple et lui dit: «Si tu es le Fils de Dieu, jette-toi d'ici en bas, car il est écrit:10Il donnera, à ton sujet, ordre à ses anges de te garder11et: Ils te porteront sur les mains, de peur que ton pied ne heurte une pierre.[3]» (Ps 91:11)12Jésus lui répondit: «Il est dit: Tu ne provoqueras pas le Seigneur, ton Dieu.[4]» (Dt 6:16)13Après l'avoir tenté de toutes ces manières, le diable s'éloigna de lui jusqu'à un moment favorable.
Jésus à Nazareth
14Jésus, revêtu de la puissance de l'Esprit, retourna en Galilée, et sa réputation gagna toute la région.15Il enseignait dans les synagogues et tous lui rendaient gloire.16Jésus se rendit à Nazareth où il avait été élevé et, conformément à son habitude, il entra dans la synagogue le jour du sabbat. Il se leva pour faire la lecture,17et on lui remit le livre du prophète Esaïe. Il le déroula[5] et trouva l'endroit où il était écrit:18L'Esprit du Seigneur est sur moi, parce qu'il m'a consacré par onction pour annoncer la bonne nouvelle aux pauvres; il m'a envoyé [pour guérir ceux qui ont le cœur brisé,]19pour proclamer aux prisonniers la délivrance et aux aveugles le recouvrement de la vue, pour renvoyer libres les opprimés, pour proclamer une année de grâce du Seigneur.[6] (Is 61:1)20Ensuite, il roula le livre, le remit au serviteur et s'assit. Tous ceux qui se trouvaient dans la synagogue avaient les regards fixés sur lui.21Alors il commença à leur dire: «Aujourd'hui cette parole de l'Ecriture, que vous venez d'entendre, est accomplie.»22Tous lui rendaient témoignage; ils étaient étonnés des paroles de grâce qui sortaient de sa bouche et ils disaient: «N'est-ce pas le fils de Joseph?»23Jésus leur dit: «Vous allez sans doute me citer ce proverbe: ‘Médecin, guéris-toi toi-même’, et vous me direz: ‘Fais ici, dans ta patrie, tout ce que, à ce que nous avons appris, tu as fait à Capernaüm.’»24Il leur dit encore: «Je vous le dis en vérité, aucun prophète n'est bien accueilli dans sa patrie.25Je vous le déclare en toute vérité: il y avait de nombreuses veuves en Israël à l'époque d'Elie, lorsque le ciel a été fermé 3 ans et 6 mois et qu'il y a eu une grande famine dans tout le pays.26Cependant, Elie n'a été envoyé vers aucune d'elles, mais seulement vers une veuve de Sarepta, dans le pays de Sidon.27Il y avait aussi de nombreux lépreux en Israël à l'époque du prophète Elisée, et cependant aucun d'eux n'a été purifié, mais seulement Naaman le Syrien.»28Ils furent tous remplis de colère dans la synagogue, lorsqu'ils entendirent ces paroles.29Ils se levèrent, le chassèrent de la ville et le menèrent jusqu'à un escarpement de la montagne sur laquelle leur ville était construite, afin de le précipiter dans le vide.30Mais Jésus passa au milieu d'eux et s'en alla.
Miracles à Capernaüm
31Il descendit à Capernaüm, ville de la Galilée, et il les enseignait le jour du sabbat.32On était frappé par son enseignement, car il parlait avec autorité.33Dans la synagogue se trouvait un homme qui avait un esprit démoniaque impur. Il s'écria d'une voix forte:34«Ah! Que nous veux-tu, Jésus de Nazareth? Es-tu venu pour nous perdre? Je sais qui tu es: le Saint de Dieu.»35Jésus le menaça en disant: «Tais-toi et sors de cet homme.» Le démon jeta l'homme au milieu de l'assemblée et sortit de lui sans lui faire aucun mal.36Tous furent saisis de frayeur, et ils se disaient les uns aux autres: «Quelle est cette parole? Il commande avec autorité et puissance aux esprits impurs, et ils sortent!»37Et sa réputation gagna toute la région.38En sortant de la synagogue, il se rendit à la maison de Simon. La belle-mère de Simon avait une forte fièvre et on lui demanda d'intervenir en sa faveur.39Il se pencha sur elle, menaça la fièvre, et la fièvre la quitta. Elle se leva immédiatement et se mit à les servir.40Au coucher du soleil, tous ceux qui avaient des malades atteints de diverses maladies les lui amenèrent. Il guérit chacun d'eux en posant les mains sur lui.41Des démons aussi sortirent de beaucoup de personnes en criant et en disant: «Tu es [le Messie,] le Fils de Dieu.» Mais il les reprenait sévèrement et ne leur permettait pas de parler, parce qu'ils savaient qu'il était le Messie.42Quand il fit jour, il sortit et se retira dans un endroit désert. Une foule de gens se mirent à sa recherche et arrivèrent jusqu'à lui; ils voulaient le retenir afin qu'il ne les quitte pas,43mais il leur dit: «Il faut aussi que j'annonce aux autres villes la bonne nouvelle du royaume de Dieu, car c'est pour cela que j'ai été envoyé.»44Et il prêchait dans les synagogues de la Galilée.
1Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,2where for forty days he was tempted[1] by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.3The devil said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.’4Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Man shall not live on bread alone.” ’ (Dt 8:3)5The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.6And he said to him, ‘I will give you all their authority and splendour; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to.7If you worship me, it will all be yours.’8Jesus answered, ‘It is written: “Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.” ’ (Dt 6:13)9The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. ‘If you are the Son of God,’ he said, ‘throw yourself down from here.10For it is written: ‘ “He will command his angels concerning you to guard you carefully;11they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.” ’ (Ps 91:11; Ps 91:12)12Jesus answered, ‘It is said: “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.” ’ (Dt 6:16)13When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.
Jesus rejected at Nazareth
14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.15He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.16He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read,17and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:18‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,19to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’[2] (Is 58:6; Is 61:1; Is 61:2)20Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him.21He began by saying to them, ‘Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.’22All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. ‘Isn’t this Joseph’s son?’ they asked.23Jesus said to them, ‘Surely you will quote this proverb to me: “Physician, heal yourself!” And you will tell me, “Do here in your home town what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.” ’24‘Truly I tell you,’ he continued, ‘no prophet is accepted in his home town.25I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.27And there were many in Israel with leprosy[3] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed – only Naaman the Syrian.’28All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this.29They got up, drove him out of the town, and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.30But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.
Jesus drives out an impure spirit
31Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people.32They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.33In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice,34‘Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are – the Holy One of God!’35‘Be quiet!’ Jesus said sternly. ‘Come out of him!’ Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.36All the people were amazed and said to each other, ‘What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!’37And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.
Jesus heals many
38Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her.39So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.40At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of illness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them.41Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, ‘You are the Son of God!’ But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.42At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them.43But he said, ‘I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.’44And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.
