Appel à ne pas aller en Egypte

1 Tous les chefs de troupes, Jochanan, fils de Karéach, Jezania, fils d'Hosée, et tout le peuple, du plus petit au plus grand, s'approchèrent 2 et dirent au prophète Jérémie: «Fais bon accueil à notre supplication! Intercède en notre faveur auprès de l'Eternel, ton Dieu, en faveur de ce qui reste de nous, car nous ne sommes plus qu'un petit nombre alors que nous étions si nombreux, comme tu peux le constater par toi-même. 3 Que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, nous révèle le chemin à suivre et la parole à respecter!» 4 Le prophète Jérémie leur répondit: «Entendu! Je vais intercéder auprès de l'Eternel, votre Dieu, conformément à votre demande et je vous annoncerai, sans rien vous cacher, tout ce qu'il vous répondra.» 5 Ils dirent encore à Jérémie: «Que l'Eternel soit contre nous un témoin véritable et fidèle, si nous ne nous conformons pas à tout ce que l'Eternel, ton Dieu, te chargera de nous dire! 6 Que cela nous plaise ou pas, nous obéirons à l'Eternel, notre Dieu, vers qui nous t'envoyons, afin qu'il nous arrive du bien. Oui, nous obéirons à l'Eternel, notre Dieu.» 7 Au bout de 10 jours, la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Jérémie, 8 et celui-ci appela Jochanan, fils de Karéach, tous les chefs de troupes qui étaient avec lui et tout le peuple, du plus petit au plus grand. 9 Il leur dit: «Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, vers qui vous m'avez envoyé pour que je lui présente votre supplication: 10 Si vous persévérez à habiter ce pays, je vous restaurerai pour ne plus vous détruire, je vous planterai pour ne plus vous arracher, car je regrette le mal que je vous ai fait. 11 N'ayez pas peur du roi de Babylone comme c'est le cas actuellement! N'ayez pas peur de lui, déclare l'Eternel, car je suis moi-même avec vous pour vous sauver et vous délivrer de lui. 12 Je lui inspirerai de la compassion pour vous et il aura pitié de vous, au point qu'il vous laissera revenir sur votre terre. 13 »Si en revanche vous dites: ‘Nous n'habiterons pas ce pays’, refusant ainsi d'obéir à l'Eternel, votre Dieu, 14 si vous affirmez: ‘Non, nous irons en Egypte où nous ne verrons plus de guerre, n'entendrons plus le son de la trompette et ne manquerons plus de pain, et c'est là-bas que nous habiterons’, 15 alors dans ce cas écoutez la parole de l'Eternel, reste de Juda! Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, le Dieu d'Israël: ‘Si vous décidez vraiment d'aller en Egypte, dans l'intention de vous y réfugier, 16 l'épée dont vous avez si peur vous atteindra là-bas en Egypte, la famine que vous redoutez tant s'attachera à vous là-bas en Egypte, et c'est là-bas que vous mourrez. 17 Tous les hommes qui prendront la décision d'aller en Egypte avec l'intention de s'y réfugier mourront par l'épée, la famine ou la peste. Il n'y aura aucun survivant, aucun rescapé, suite au malheur que je ferai venir sur eux.’ 18 En effet, voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, le Dieu d'Israël: ‘De même que ma colère et ma fureur se sont déversées sur les habitants de Jérusalem, de même ma fureur se déversera sur vous lorsque vous irez en Egypte. Vous deviendrez un sujet d'imprécation, de consternation, de malédiction et d'insulte, et vous ne reverrez plus cet endroit.’ 19 »Reste de Juda, l'Eternel vous dit de ne pas aller en Egypte. Sachez-le, je vous en avertis aujourd'hui! 20 Vous vous égarez vous-mêmes, puisque vous m'avez envoyé vers l'Eternel, votre Dieu, en affirmant: ‘Intercède en notre faveur auprès de l'Eternel, notre Dieu! Révèle-nous tout ce que l'Eternel, notre Dieu, dira et nous le ferons.’ 21 Je vous l'ai révélé aujourd'hui, mais vous n'écoutez pas l'Eternel, votre Dieu, ni tout ce qu'il m'a chargé de vous dire. 22 Sachez-le maintenant, vous mourrez par l'épée, la famine ou la peste là même où vous désirez tant vous rendre pour vous y réfugier.»

1 Then all the army officers, including Johanan son of Kareah and Jezaniah^[1] son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest approached 2 Jeremiah the prophet and said to him, ‘Please hear our petition and pray to the Lord your God for this entire remnant. For as you now see, though we were once many, now only a few are left. 3 Pray that the Lord your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.’ 4 ‘I have heard you,’ replied Jeremiah the prophet. ‘I will certainly pray to the Lord your God as you have requested; I will tell you everything the Lord says and will keep nothing back from you.’ 5 Then they said to Jeremiah, ‘May the Lord be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act in accordance with everything the Lord your God sends you to tell us. 6 Whether it is favourable or unfavourable, we will obey the Lord our God, to whom we are sending you, so that it will go well with us, for we will obey the Lord our God.’ 7 Ten days later the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. 8 So he called together Johanan son of Kareah and all the army officers who were with him and all the people from the least to the greatest. 9 He said to them, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition, says: 10 “If you stay in this land, I will build you up and not tear you down; I will plant you and not uproot you, for I have relented concerning the disaster I have inflicted on you. 11 Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear. Do not be afraid of him, declares the Lord, for I am with you and will save you and deliver you from his hands. 12 I will show you compassion so that he will have compassion on you and restore you to your land.” 13 ‘However, if you say, “We will not stay in this land,” and so disobey the Lord your God, 14 and if you say, “No, we will go and live in Egypt, where we will not see war or hear the trumpet or be hungry for bread,” 15 then hear the word of the Lord, you remnant of Judah. This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “If you are determined to go to Egypt and you do go to settle there, 16 then the sword you fear will overtake you there, and the famine you dread will follow you into Egypt, and there you will die. 17 Indeed, all who are determined to go to Egypt to settle there will die by the sword, famine and plague; not one of them will survive or escape the disaster I will bring on them.” 18 This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: “As my anger and wrath have been poured out on those who lived in Jerusalem, so will my wrath be poured out on you when you go to Egypt. You will be a curse^[2] and an object of horror, a curse^[3] and an object of reproach; you will never see this place again.” 19 ‘Remnant of Judah, the Lord has told you, “Do not go to Egypt.” Be sure of this: I warn you today 20 that you made a fatal mistake when you sent me to the Lord your God and said, “Pray to the Lord our God for us; tell us everything he says and we will do it.” 21 I have told you today, but you still have not obeyed the Lord your God in all he sent me to tell you. 22 So now, be sure of this: you will die by the sword, famine and plague in the place where you want to go to settle.’
