1La neuvième année du règne de Sédécias sur Juda, le dixième mois, Nebucadnetsar, le roi de Babylone, vint avec toute son armée devant Jérusalem et en fit le siège.2La onzième année du règne de Sédécias, le neuvième jour du quatrième mois, une brèche fut percée dans les remparts de la ville.3Tous les chefs du roi de Babylone entrèrent et s'installèrent à la porte du milieu. Il y avait Nergal-Sharetser, Samgar-Nebu, Sarsekim, le chef des eunuques, Nergal-Sharetser, le chef des mages, et tous les autres chefs du roi de Babylone.4Dès que Sédécias, roi de Juda, et tous les hommes de guerre les virent, ils prirent la fuite. Ils sortirent de la ville pendant la nuit, en passant par le chemin du jardin du roi, par la porte située entre les deux murailles, et ils prirent le chemin de la plaine.5Cependant, l'armée babylonienne les poursuivit et rattrapa Sédécias dans les plaines de Jéricho. Ils s'emparèrent de lui et le firent monter vers Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, à Ribla, dans le pays de Hamath. Nebucadnetsar prononça des jugements contre lui.6Le roi de Babylone fit égorger les fils de Sédécias à Ribla, en sa présence. Il fit aussi égorger tous les grands de Juda,7puis il fit crever les yeux à Sédécias et le fit attacher avec des chaînes en bronze pour le conduire à Babylone.8Les Babyloniens brûlèrent le palais royal et les maisons du peuple, et ils démolirent les murailles de Jérusalem.9Nebuzaradan, le chef des gardes, emmena en exil à Babylone les membres du peuple qui étaient restés dans la ville et ceux qui s'étaient rendus à lui, ceux qui avaient survécu.10Cependant, il laissa dans le pays de Juda quelques-uns des plus pauvres du peuple, ceux qui ne possédaient rien, et il leur donna ce jour-là des vignes et des champs.
Sort de Jérémie et d'Ebed-Mélec
11Nebucadnetsar, roi de Babylone, avait donné, en en confiant la responsabilité à Nebuzaradan, le chef des gardes, cet ordre au sujet de Jérémie:12«Prends-le et veille sur lui. Ne lui fais aucun mal, mais agis vis-à-vis de lui comme il te le dira.»13Nebuzaradan, le chef des gardes, Nebushazban, le chef des eunuques, Nergal-Sharetser, le chef des mages, et tous les chefs du roi de Babylone14envoyèrent donc chercher Jérémie dans la cour de la prison et le confièrent à Guedalia, fils d'Achikam et petit-fils de Shaphan, pour qu'il l'emmène chez lui. Ainsi, Jérémie put habiter au milieu du peuple.15La parole de l'Eternel avait été adressée à Jérémie, alors qu'il était encore enfermé dans la cour de la prison:16«Va dire à Ebed-Mélec, l'Ethiopien: ‘Voici ce que dit l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, le Dieu d'Israël: Je vais faire venir sur cette ville les paroles que j'ai prononcées, pour lui faire du mal et non du bien. Ce jour-là, tu assisteras personnellement à leur accomplissement.17Cependant, ce jour-là, je te délivrerai, déclare l'Eternel, et tu ne seras pas livré entre les mains des hommes qui te font si peur.18Sois sûr que je te sauverai et que tu ne mourras pas par l'épée. Ta vie sera ta part de butin parce que tu as eu confiance en moi, déclare l'Eternel.’»

de Biblica1In the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his whole army and laid siege to it.2And on the ninth day of the fourth month of Zedekiah’s eleventh year, the city wall was broken through.3Then all the officials of the king of Babylon came and took seats in the Middle Gate: Nergal-Sharezer of Samgar, Nebo-Sarsekim a chief officer, Nergal-Sharezer a high official and all the other officials of the king of Babylon.4When Zedekiah king of Judah and all the soldiers saw them, they fled; they left the city at night by way of the king’s garden, through the gate between the two walls, and headed towards the Arabah.[1]5But the Babylonian[2] army pursued them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. They captured him and took him to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon at Riblah in the land of Hamath, where he pronounced sentence on him.6There at Riblah the king of Babylon slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes and also killed all the nobles of Judah.7Then he put out Zedekiah’s eyes and bound him with bronze shackles to take him to Babylon.8The Babylonians[3] set fire to the royal palace and the houses of the people and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.9Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard carried into exile to Babylon the people who remained in the city, along with those who had gone over to him, and the rest of the people.10But Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard left behind in the land of Judah some of the poor people, who owned nothing; and at that time he gave them vineyards and fields.11Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had given these orders about Jeremiah through Nebuzaradan commander of the imperial guard:12‘Take him and look after him; don’t harm him but do for him whatever he asks.’13So Nebuzaradan the commander of the guard, Nebushazban a chief officer, Nergal-Sharezer a high official and all the other officers of the king of Babylon14sent and had Jeremiah taken out of the courtyard of the guard. They handed him over to Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, to take him back to his home. So he remained among his own people.15While Jeremiah had been confined in the courtyard of the guard, the word of the Lord came to him:16‘Go and tell Ebed-Melek the Cushite, “This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: I am about to fulfil my words against this city – words concerning disaster, not prosperity. At that time they will be fulfilled before your eyes.17But I will rescue you on that day, declares the Lord; you will not be given into the hands of those you fear.18I will save you; you will not fall by the sword but will escape with your life, because you trust in me, declares the Lord.” ’
