1Abram remonta d'Egypte vers le Néguev avec sa femme et tout ce qui lui appartenait. Lot était avec lui.2Abram était très riche en troupeaux, en argent et en or.3Il se rendit par étapes du Néguev jusqu'à Béthel, jusqu'à l'endroit où était sa tente au début, entre Béthel et Aï,4là où se trouvait l'autel qu'il avait fait la première fois. Là, Abram fit appel au nom de l'Eternel.5Lot, qui voyageait avec Abram, avait aussi des brebis, des bœufs et des tentes.6La région ne suffisait pas pour qu'ils habitent ensemble. En effet, leurs biens étaient si nombreux qu'ils ne pouvaient plus rester ensemble.7Il y eut une dispute entre les bergers des troupeaux d'Abram et les bergers des troupeaux de Lot. Les Cananéens et les Phéréziens habitaient alors dans le pays.8Abram dit à Lot: «Qu'il n'y ait donc pas de dispute entre toi et moi, ni entre tes bergers et les miens, car nous sommes frères.9Tout le pays n'est-il pas devant toi? Sépare-toi de moi. Si tu vas à gauche, j'irai à droite, et si tu vas à droite, j'irai à gauche.»10Lot leva les yeux et vit que toute la plaine du Jourdain était entièrement arrosée. Avant que l'Eternel n'ait détruit Sodome et Gomorrhe, c'était, jusqu'à Tsoar, comme un jardin de l'Eternel, comme l'Egypte.11Lot choisit pour lui toute la plaine du Jourdain et se mit en route vers l'est. C'est ainsi qu'ils se séparèrent l'un de l'autre.12Abram s'installa dans le pays de Canaan, tandis que Lot s'installait dans les villes de la plaine et dressait ses tentes jusqu'à Sodome.13Les habitants de Sodome étaient mauvais et péchaient beaucoup contre l'Eternel.
Nouvelles promesses à Abram
14L'Eternel dit à Abram, après que Lot se fut séparé de lui: «Lève les yeux et, de l'endroit où tu es, regarde vers le nord et le sud, vers l'est et l'ouest.15En effet, tout le pays que tu vois, je te le donnerai à toi, ainsi qu'à ta descendance pour toujours.16Je rendrai ta descendance pareille à la poussière de la terre, de sorte que, si quelqu'un peut compter la poussière de la terre, ta descendance aussi sera comptée.17Lève-toi et parcours le pays dans sa longueur et dans sa largeur, car je te le donnerai.»18Abram déplaça ses tentes et vint habiter parmi les chênes de Mamré qui sont près d'Hébron. Là, il construisit un autel en l'honneur de l'Eternel.
1So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and everything he had, and Lot went with him.2Abram had become very wealthy in livestock and in silver and gold.3From the Negev he went from place to place until he came to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had been earlier4and where he had first built an altar. There Abram called on the name of the Lord.5Now Lot, who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.6But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.7And quarrelling arose between Abram’s herdsmen and Lot’s. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time.8So Abram said to Lot, ‘Let’s not have any quarrelling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are close relatives.9Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.’10Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan towards Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)11So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out towards the east. The two men parted company:12Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.13Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.14The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, ‘Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west.15All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring[1] for ever.16I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.17Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you.’18So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.
