Envoi de Barnabas et Saul

1 Il y avait dans l'Eglise d'Antioche des prophètes et des enseignants: Barnabas, Siméon appelé le Noir, Lucius de Cyrène, Manahen, qui avait été élevé avec Hérode le tétrarque^[1], et Saul. 2 Pendant qu'ils rendaient un culte au Seigneur et qu'ils jeûnaient, le Saint-Esprit dit: «Mettez-moi à part Barnabas et Saul pour la tâche à laquelle je les ai appelés.» 3 Alors, après avoir jeûné, prié et posé les mains sur eux, ils les laissèrent partir. 4 Envoyés par le Saint-Esprit, Barnabas et Saul descendirent à Séleucie, d'où ils embarquèrent pour l'île de Chypre. 5 Arrivés à Salamine, ils annoncèrent la parole de Dieu dans les synagogues des Juifs. Ils avaient aussi Jean pour aide. 6 Ensuite, ils traversèrent [toute] l'île jusqu'à Paphos, où ils trouvèrent un magicien, un prétendu prophète juif appelé Bar-Jésus. 7 Il faisait partie de l'entourage du gouverneur Sergius Paulus, un homme intelligent. Ce dernier fit appeler Barnabas et Saul et exprima le désir d'entendre la parole de Dieu. 8 Mais Elymas le magicien – c'est en effet ce que signifie son nom – s'opposait à eux et cherchait à détourner le gouverneur de la foi. 9 Alors Saul, appelé aussi Paul, rempli du Saint-Esprit, fixa les regards sur lui et dit: 10 «Homme plein de toute sorte de ruse et de méchanceté, fils du diable, ennemi de toute justice, ne vas-tu pas cesser de pervertir les voies droites du Seigneur? 11 Maintenant, voici que la main du Seigneur est sur toi: tu seras aveugle et pour un temps tu ne verras pas le soleil.» L'obscurité et les ténèbres tombèrent immédiatement sur lui et il se tournait de tous côtés en cherchant quelqu'un pour le guider. 12 Quand il vit ce qui était arrivé, le gouverneur crut, frappé qu'il était par l'enseignement du Seigneur. 13 Paul et ses compagnons embarquèrent à Paphos pour se rendre à Perge en Pamphylie, mais Jean se sépara d'eux et retourna à Jérusalem.

L'Evangile à Antioche de Pisidie

14 De Perge ils poursuivirent leur route et arrivèrent à Antioche de Pisidie. Ils entrèrent dans la synagogue le jour du sabbat et s'assirent. 15 Après la lecture de la loi et des prophètes, les chefs de la synagogue leur firent dire: «Frères, si vous avez quelques mots d'encouragement à adresser au peuple, parlez!» 16 Paul se leva, fit un signe de la main et dit: «Israélites et vous qui craignez Dieu, écoutez! 17 Le Dieu de ce peuple, [d'Israël,] a choisi nos ancêtres. Il a fait grandir le peuple pendant son séjour en Egypte et il l'en a fait sortir par sa puissance. 18 Il les a supportés près de 40 ans dans le désert 19 et, après avoir détruit sept nations dans le pays de Canaan, il [leur] a accordé leur territoire comme propriété. 20 Après cela, durant 450 ans environ, il leur a donné des juges, jusqu'au prophète Samuel. 21 Ils ont alors demandé un roi, et Dieu leur a donné pendant 40 ans Saül, fils de Kis, de la tribu de Benjamin. 22 Puis il l'a rejeté et leur a donné pour roi David, auquel il a rendu ce témoignage: J'ai trouvé David, fils d'Isaï, un homme selon mon cœur, qui accomplira toutes mes volontés.^[2] (1S 13:14) 23 »C'est de la descendance de David que Dieu, conformément à sa promesse, a amené à Israël un Sauveur qui est Jésus. 24 Avant sa venue, Jean avait prêché le baptême de repentance à tout le peuple d'Israël. 25 Et, lorsqu'il terminait sa course, Jean disait: ‘Je ne suis pas celui que vous pensez, mais le voici qui vient après moi et je ne suis pas digne de détacher ses sandales.’ 26 »Mes frères, descendants d'Abraham et vous qui craignez Dieu, c'est à vous que cette parole de salut a été envoyée. 27 En effet, les habitants de Jérusalem et leurs chefs n'ont pas reconnu qui était Jésus, mais en le condamnant ils ont accompli les paroles des prophètes qu'on lit chaque sabbat. 28 Bien que n'ayant rien trouvé en lui qui mérite la mort, ils ont demandé à Pilate de le faire mourir. 29 Après avoir accompli tout ce qui est écrit à son sujet, ils l'ont descendu de la croix et l'ont déposé dans un tombeau. 30 Mais Dieu l'a ressuscité. 31 Il est apparu pendant plusieurs jours à ceux qui étaient montés avec lui de la Galilée à Jérusalem et qui sont [maintenant] ses témoins auprès du peuple. 32 »Et nous, nous vous annonçons cette bonne nouvelle: la promesse faite à nos ancêtres, 33 Dieu l'a accomplie pour nous, leurs descendants, en ressuscitant Jésus, conformément à ce qui est écrit dans le Psaume 2: Tu es mon Fils, je t'ai engendré aujourd'hui.^[3] (Ps 2:7) 34 Il l'a ressuscité, de telle sorte qu'il ne retournera pas à la décomposition; c'est ce qu'il a déclaré en disant: Je vous donnerai les grâces saintes et sûres promises à David.^[4] (Is 55:3) 35 C'est pourquoi il dit encore ailleurs: Tu ne permettras pas que ton saint connaisse la décomposition.^[5] (Ps 16:10) 36 Or, après avoir dans sa propre génération été au service de la volonté de Dieu, David est mort, a rejoint ses ancêtres et a connu la décomposition. 37 En revanche, celui que Dieu a ressuscité ne l'a pas connue. 38 »Sachez-le donc, mes frères: c'est par lui que le pardon des péchés vous est annoncé 39 et c'est par lui que toute personne qui croit est libérée de toutes les fautes dont vous ne pouviez pas être libérés par la loi de Moïse. 40 Ainsi, faites attention qu'il ne vous arrive pas ce qui est dit dans les prophètes: 41 Regardez, vous qui êtes pleins de mépris, soyez étonnés et disparaissez, car je vais faire à votre époque une œuvre que vous ne croiriez pas si on vous la racontait.^[6]» (Ha 1:5) 42 Lorsqu'ils sortirent [de la synagogue des Juifs], les non-Juifs les invitèrent à parler du même sujet le sabbat suivant. 43 Quand l'assemblée se dispersa, beaucoup de Juifs et de non-Juifs pieux convertis au judaïsme suivirent Paul et Barnabas, qui s'entretinrent avec eux et les convainquirent de rester attachés à la grâce de Dieu. 44 Le sabbat suivant, presque toute la ville se rassembla pour écouter la parole de Dieu. 45 Quand ils virent cette foule, les Juifs furent remplis de jalousie, et ils s'opposaient à ce que disait Paul [en le contredisant et] en l'insultant. 46 Paul et Barnabas leur dirent avec assurance: «C'était à vous d'abord que la parole de Dieu devait être annoncée mais, puisque vous la rejetez et que vous vous jugez vous-mêmes indignes de la vie éternelle, nous nous tournons vers les non-Juifs. 47 En effet, tel est l'ordre que le Seigneur nous a donné: Je t'ai établi pour être la lumière des nations, pour apporter le salut jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre.^[7]» (Is 49:6) 48 Les non-Juifs se réjouissaient en entendant cela, ils célébraient la parole du Seigneur, et tous ceux qui étaient destinés à la vie éternelle crurent. 49 La parole du Seigneur se propageait dans tout le pays. 50 Mais les Juifs excitèrent les femmes pieuses de la haute société et les personnalités de la ville, ils provoquèrent une persécution contre Paul et Barnabas et les chassèrent de leur territoire. 51 Paul et Barnabas secouèrent contre eux la poussière de leurs pieds^[8] et allèrent à Iconium. 52 Quant aux disciples, ils étaient remplis de joie et du Saint-Esprit.

1 Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul. 2 While they were worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ 3 So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.

On Cyprus

4 The two of them, sent on their way by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus. 5 When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper. 6 They travelled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus, 7 who was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for that is what his name means) opposed them and tried to turn the proconsul from the faith. 9 Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked straight at Elymas and said, 10 ‘You are a child of the devil and an enemy of everything that is right! You are full of all kinds of deceit and trickery. Will you never stop perverting the right ways of the Lord? 11 Now the hand of the Lord is against you. You are going to be blind for a time, not even able to see the light of the sun.’ Immediately mist and darkness came over him, and he groped about, seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12 When the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, for he was amazed at the teaching about the Lord.

In Pisidian Antioch

13 From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem. 14 From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch. On the Sabbath they entered the synagogue and sat down. 15 After the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, ‘Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.’ 16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand and said: ‘Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! 17 The God of the people of Israel chose our ancestors; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt; with mighty power he led them out of that country; 18 for about forty years he endured their conduct^[1] in the wilderness; 19 and he overthrew seven nations in Canaan, giving their land to his people as their inheritance. 20 All this took about 450 years. ‘After this, God gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet. 21 Then the people asked for a king, and he gave them Saul son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled for forty years. 22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: “I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.” 23 ‘From this man’s descendants God has brought to Israel the Saviour Jesus, as he promised. 24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel. 25 As John was completing his work, he said: “Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for. But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.” 26 ‘Fellow children of Abraham and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognise Jesus, yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every Sabbath. 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the cross and laid him in a tomb. 30 But God raised him from the dead, 31 and for many days he was seen by those who had travelled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people. 32 ‘We tell you the good news: what God promised our ancestors 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: ‘ “You are my son; today I have become your father.” (Ps 2:7) 34 God raised him from the dead so that he will never be subject to decay. As God has said, ‘ “I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.” (Is 55:3) 35 So it is also stated elsewhere: ‘ “You will not let your holy one see decay.”^[2] (Ps 16:10) 36 ‘Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay. 38 ‘Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. 39 Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses. 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you: 41 ‘ “Look, you scoffers, wonder and perish, for I am going to do something in your days that you would never believe, even if someone told you.” ’ (Ha 1:5) 42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue, the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath. 43 When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God. 44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying and heaped abuse on him. 46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: ‘We had to speak the word of God to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. 47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us: ‘ “I have made you^[3] a light for the Gentiles, that you^[4] may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.” ’ (Is 49:6) 48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honoured the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed. 49 The word of the Lord spread through the whole region. 50 But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. 51 So they shook the dust off their feet as a warning to them and went to Iconium. 52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
