1 David rassembla encore toute l'élite d'Israël, qui comptait 30'000 hommes. 2 Puis, avec tout le peuple qui était à ses côtés, il partit de Baalé-Juda pour faire monter de là l'arche de Dieu, à laquelle est associé le nom de l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, qui siège au-dessus d'elle entre les chérubins. 3 Ils mirent ce coffre de Dieu sur un char neuf et l'emportèrent depuis la maison d'Abinadab qui se trouve sur la colline; c'étaient Uzza et Achjo, les fils d'Abinadab, qui conduisaient le char neuf. 4 Ils l'emportèrent donc depuis la maison d'Abinadab qui se trouve sur la colline. Uzza marchait à côté de l'arche de Dieu, et Achjo devant. 5 David et toute la communauté d'Israël jouaient devant l'Eternel de toutes sortes d'instruments en bois de cyprès, de la harpe, du luth, du tambourin, du sistre et des cymbales. 6 Lorsqu'ils furent arrivés à l'aire de battage de Nacon, Uzza tendit la main vers l'arche de Dieu et la retint, parce que les bœufs la faisaient pencher. 7 La colère de l'Eternel s'enflamma contre lui et Dieu le frappa sur place à cause de sa faute. Uzza mourut là, près de l'arche de Dieu. 8 David fut troublé de ce que l'Eternel avait infligé une telle punition à Uzza, et cet endroit a été appelé jusqu'à aujourd'hui Pérets-Uzza. 9 David eut peur de l'Eternel, ce jour-là, et il se dit: «Comment l'arche de l'Eternel pourrait-elle entrer chez moi?» 10 Il ne voulut pas prendre l'arche de l'Eternel chez lui, dans la ville de David, et il la fit conduire dans la maison d'Obed-Edom, un homme de Gath. 11 L'arche de l'Eternel resta 3 mois dans la maison d'Obed-Edom de Gath et l'Eternel le bénit, ainsi que toute sa famille. 12 On vint dire au roi David: «L'Eternel a béni la famille d'Obed-Edom et tout ce qui lui appartient à cause de l'arche de Dieu.» David se mit alors en route et il fit monter l'arche de Dieu depuis la maison d'Obed-Edom jusqu'à la ville de David au milieu des réjouissances. 13 Quand ceux qui portaient l'arche de l'Eternel eurent fait six pas, on sacrifia un bœuf et un veau gras. 14 David dansait de toute sa force devant l'Eternel et il était habillé d'un éphod en lin. 15 David et toute la communauté d'Israël firent monter l'arche de l'Eternel avec des cris de joie et au son des trompettes. 16 Mical, fille de Saül, regardait par la fenêtre lorsque l'arche de l'Eternel entra dans la ville de David et, en voyant le roi David sauter et danser devant l'Eternel, elle éprouva du mépris pour lui dans son cœur. 17 Une fois qu'on eut amené l'arche de l'Eternel, on la mit à sa place au milieu de la tente que David avait dressée pour elle, et David offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion devant l'Eternel. 18 Quand il eut fini d'offrir les holocaustes et les sacrifices de communion, David bénit le peuple au nom de l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers. 19 Puis il distribua à tout le peuple, à toute la foule d'Israël, hommes et femmes confondus, un pain, une portion de viande et un gâteau aux raisins. Et tout le peuple repartit, chacun chez soi. 20 David retourna chez lui pour bénir sa famille et Mical, fille de Saül, sortit à sa rencontre. Elle dit: «Quel honneur aujourd'hui pour le roi d'Israël! Il s'est dénudé aux yeux des servantes de ses serviteurs comme le ferait un homme sans valeur!» 21 David répondit à Mical: «C'est devant l'Eternel, qui m'a choisi de préférence à ton père et à toute sa famille pour m'établir comme chef sur son peuple, sur Israël, c'est devant l'Eternel que j'ai dansé. 22 Je veux paraître encore plus petit que cela et m'abaisser à mes propres yeux. Toutefois je serai honoré auprès des servantes dont tu parles.» 23 Mical, fille de Saül, n'eut pas d'enfants jusqu'au jour de sa mort.

The ark brought to Jerusalem

1 David again brought together all the able young men of Israel – thirty thousand. 2 He and all his men went to Baalah^[1] in Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name,^[2] the name of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim on the ark. (1Ch 13:6) 3 They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart 4 with the ark of God on it,^[3] and Ahio was walking in front of it. 5 David and all Israel were celebrating with all their might before the Lord, with castanets,^[4] harps, lyres, tambourines, rattles and cymbals. (1Ch 13:8) 6 When they came to the threshing-floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. 7 The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down, and he died there beside the ark of God. 8 Then David was angry because the Lord’s wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.^[5] 9 David was afraid of the Lord that day and said, ‘How can the ark of the Lord ever come to me?’ 10 He was not willing to take the ark of the Lord to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 11 The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed him and his entire household. 12 Now King David was told, ‘The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God.’ So David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. 13 When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. 14 Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, 15 while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets. 16 As the ark of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart. 17 They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and David sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before the Lord. 18 After he had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord Almighty. 19 Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each person in the whole crowd of Israelites, both men and women. And all the people went to their homes. 20 When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, ‘How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!’ 21 David said to Michal, ‘It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel – I will celebrate before the Lord. 22 I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honour.’ 23 And Michal daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.
