Saül épargné par David à En-Guédi

1 De là David monta vers les falaises d'En-Guédi, où il habita. 2 Lorsque Saül fut de retour après avoir poursuivi les Philistins, on vint lui dire: «David est dans le désert d'En-Guédi.» 3 Saül prit 3000 hommes d'élite choisis sur tout Israël, et il alla à la recherche de David et de ses hommes jusque sur les rochers des bouquetins. 4 Il arriva à des parcs à brebis, qui étaient près du chemin. Là se trouvait une grotte, où il entra pour satisfaire un besoin naturel. David et ses hommes se trouvaient au fond de la grotte. 5 Les hommes de David lui dirent: «Voici le jour où l'Eternel te dit: ‘Je livre ton ennemi entre tes mains; traite-le comme tu le jugeras bon.’» David se leva et coupa doucement le pan du manteau de Saül. 6 Après cela il sentit son cœur battre, parce qu'il avait coupé le pan du manteau de Saül. 7 Il dit à ses hommes: «Que l'Eternel me garde de commettre une telle action contre mon seigneur, celui que l'Eternel a désigné par onction! Qu'il me garde de porter la main contre lui, car il est celui que l'Eternel a désigné par onction.» 8 Par ces paroles David arrêta ses hommes et les empêcha de se jeter sur Saül. Puis Saül se leva pour sortir de la grotte et continua son chemin. 9 Peu après, David se leva et sortit de la grotte. Il se mit alors à crier vers Saül: «O roi, mon seigneur!» Saül regarda derrière lui et David s'inclina le visage contre terre et se prosterna. 10 David dit à Saül: «Pourquoi écoutes-tu les propos de ceux qui prétendent que je cherche ton malheur? 11 Tu vois maintenant de tes propres yeux que l'Eternel t'avait livré aujourd'hui entre mes mains dans la grotte. On me poussait à te tuer, mais je t'ai épargné et j'ai dit: ‘Je ne porterai pas la main contre mon seigneur, car il est celui que l'Eternel a désigné par onction.’ 12 Regarde, mon père, regarde donc le pan de ton manteau dans ma main. J'ai coupé le pan de ton manteau, mais je ne t'ai pas tué. Sache et reconnais donc qu'il n'y a dans ma conduite ni méchanceté ni révolte et que je n'ai pas péché contre toi. Et pourtant tu me dresses des embuscades pour m'enlever la vie! 13 L'Eternel sera juge entre toi et moi, et il me vengera de toi, mais je ne porterai pas la main contre toi. 14 ‘Des méchants vient la méchanceté’, dit l'ancien proverbe. Aussi, je ne porterai pas la main contre toi. 15 Contre qui le roi d'Israël s'est-il mis en marche? Qui poursuis-tu? Un chien mort, une puce! 16 L'Eternel jugera et prononcera son verdict entre toi et moi. Il regardera et il défendra ma cause, il me rendra justice en me délivrant de toi.» 17 Lorsque David eut fini d'adresser ces paroles à Saül, celui-ci dit: «Est-ce bien ta voix, mon fils David?» Et Saül se mit à pleurer tout haut. 18 Il dit à David: «Tu es plus juste que moi, car tu m'as fait du bien, alors que moi je t'ai fait du mal. 19 Tu démontres aujourd'hui la bonté avec laquelle tu agis envers moi, puisque l'Eternel m'avait livré entre tes mains et que tu ne m'as pas tué. 20 Si quelqu'un rencontre son ennemi, le laisse-t-il poursuivre tranquillement son chemin? Que l'Eternel te récompense pour ce que tu as fait pour moi aujourd'hui! 21 Maintenant, je sais que tu régneras et que le royaume d'Israël tiendra solidement entre tes mains. 22 Jure-moi donc par l'Eternel que tu ne détruiras pas ma descendance après ma mort et que tu ne supprimeras pas mon nom de ma famille.» 23 David en fit le serment à Saül. Puis Saül retourna chez lui, et David et ses hommes gagnèrent leur retraite.

David spares Saul’s life

1 ^[1] After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, ‘David is in the Desert of En Gedi.’ 2 So Saul took three thousand able young men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats. 3 He came to the sheepfolds along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. 4 The men said, ‘This is the day the Lord spoke of when he said^[2] to you, “I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.” ’ Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul’s robe. 5 Afterwards, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. 6 He said to his men, ‘The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.’ 7 With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way. 8 Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, ‘My lord the king!’ When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground. 9 He said to Saul, ‘Why do you listen when men say, “David is bent on harming you”? 10 This day you have seen with your own eyes how the Lord gave you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, “I will not lay my hand on my lord, because he is the Lord’s anointed.” 11 See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. See that there is nothing in my hand to indicate that I am guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life. 12 May the Lord judge between you and me. And may the Lord avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you. 13 As the old saying goes, “From evildoers come evil deeds,” so my hand will not touch you. 14 ‘Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Who are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea? 15 May the Lord be our judge and decide between us. May he consider my cause and uphold it; may he vindicate me by delivering me from your hand.’ 16 When David finished saying this, Saul asked, ‘Is that your voice, David my son?’ And he wept aloud. 17 ‘You are more righteous than I,’ he said. ‘You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly. 18 You have just now told me about the good you did to me; the Lord gave me into your hands, but you did not kill me. 19 When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the Lord reward you well for the way you treated me today. 20 I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands. 21 Now swear to me by the Lord that you will not kill off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family.’ 22 So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold.
