Segond 21

1 Le peuple qui marchait dans les ténèbres a vu une grande lumière, sur ceux qui habitaient le pays de l'ombre de la mort une lumière a brillé.^[1] (Mt 4:15; Lc 1:79) 2 Tu rends la nation nombreuse, tu augmentes sa joie; elle se réjouit devant toi comme on le fait lors de la moisson, comme on jubile au partage du butin. 3 En effet, le fardeau qui pesait sur elle, le gourdin qui frappait son dos, le bâton de celui qui l'opprimait, tu les brises comme tu l'as fait lors de la victoire sur Madian. 4 Oui, toute chaussure portée dans la bataille et tout habit roulé dans le sang seront livrés aux flammes pour être réduits en cendres. 5 En effet, un enfant nous est né, un fils nous a été donné, et la souveraineté reposera sur son épaule; on l'appellera merveilleux conseiller, Dieu puissant, Père éternel, Prince de la paix.

Jugement d'Israël et de Juda

6 Etendre la souveraineté, donner une paix sans fin au trône de David et à son royaume, l'affermir et le soutenir par le droit et par la justice, dès maintenant et pour toujours: voilà ce que fera le zèle de l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers. 7 Le Seigneur envoie une parole contre Jacob, et elle tombe sur Israël. 8 Le peuple tout entier en aura connaissance, Ephraïm et les habitants de Samarie, eux qui disent avec orgueil et arrogance: 9 «Des briques sont tombées? Nous construirons en pierres de taille. Des sycomores ont été coupés? Nous les remplacerons par des cèdres.» 10 L'Eternel fait alors triompher contre eux les ennemis de Retsin et arme leurs ennemis: 11 les Syriens à l'est, les Philistins à l'ouest. Ils dévorent Israël à pleine bouche. Mais malgré tout cela, sa colère ne se détourne pas et sa puissance est encore déployée. 12 C'est que le peuple ne revient pas à celui qui le frappe et ne recherche pas l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers. 13 Aussi l'Eternel arrachera-t-il d'Israël la tête et la queue, la branche de palmier et le roseau, tout cela le même jour. 14 – L'ancien et le magistrat, c'est la tête, et le prophète qui propage le mensonge, c'est la queue. – 15 Les conducteurs de ce peuple l'égarent et ceux qui se laissent conduire par eux se perdent. 16 C'est pourquoi le Seigneur ne peut se réjouir en pensant à ses jeunes gens et n'aura pas pitié de leurs orphelins et de leurs veuves. En effet, tous sont des impies et des méchants, et toutes les bouches ne savent que proférer des absurdités. Mais malgré tout cela, sa colère ne se détourne pas et sa puissance est encore déployée. 17 En effet, la méchanceté brûle comme un feu qui dévore ronces et buissons épineux; elle embrase les buissons de la forêt, d'où s'élèvent des colonnes de fumée. 18 C'est à cause de la colère de l'Eternel, le maître de l'univers, que le pays est embrasé, et le peuple alimente lui-même ce feu: personne n'épargne son frère; 19 on pille à droite, mais on a encore faim; on dévore à gauche, mais on n'est pas rassasié; chacun se met à manger son propre bras. 20 Manassé dévore Ephraïm, Ephraïm Manassé, et ensemble ils fondent sur Juda. Mais malgré tout cela, sa colère ne se détourne pas et sa puissance est encore déployée.

1 ^[1] Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honour Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan – 2 The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. 3 You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder. 4 For as in the day of Midian’s defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. 5 Every warrior’s boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire. 6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and for ever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.

The Lord’s anger against Israel

8 The Lord has sent a message against Jacob; it will fall on Israel. 9 All the people will know it – Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria – who say with pride and arrogance of heart, 10 ‘The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with dressed stone; the fig-trees have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars.’ 11 But the Lord has strengthened Rezin’s foes against them and has spurred their enemies on. 12 Arameans from the east and Philistines from the west have devoured Israel with open mouth. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. 13 But the people have not returned to him who struck them, nor have they sought the Lord Almighty. 14 So the Lord will cut off from Israel both head and tail, both palm branch and reed in a single day; 15 the elders and dignitaries are the head, the prophets who teach lies are the tail. 16 Those who guide this people mislead them, and those who are guided are led astray. 17 Therefore the Lord will take no pleasure in the young men, nor will he pity the fatherless and widows, for everyone is ungodly and wicked, every mouth speaks folly. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised. 18 Surely wickedness burns like a fire; it consumes briers and thorns, it sets the forest thickets ablaze, so that it rolls upwards in a column of smoke. 19 By the wrath of the Lord Almighty the land will be scorched and the people will be fuel for the fire; they will not spare one another. 20 On the right they will devour, but still be hungry; on the left they will eat, but not be satisfied. Each will feed on the flesh of their own offspring^[2]: 21 Manasseh will feed on Ephraim, and Ephraim on Manasseh; together they will turn against Judah. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.
