1Poi vidi scendere dal cielo un angelo che teneva in mano la chiave del pozzo senza fondo e una pesante catena.2Egli afferrò il drago, lʼantico serpente, cioè il diavolo o Satana, lo incatenò per mille anni,3e lo gettò nel pozzo senza fondo, di cui poi richiuse e sigillò lʼingresso. Così non avrebbe più ingannato i popoli, finché non fossero finiti i mille anni. Però, alla fine dei mille anni, dovrà essere liberato di nuovo per un poʼ di tempo.4Poi vidi dei troni, e quelli che vi si posero a sedere avevano il diritto di giudicare. Vidi le anime di quelli che erano stati decapitati per aver testimoniato di Gesù, per aver proclamato la parola di Dio, e di coloro che non avevano adorato né il mostro né la sua statua e che non avevano accettato il suo marchio sulla fronte o sulla mano. Erano tornati in vita ed ora regnavano con Cristo per mille anni.5Questa è la prima resurrezione. (Il resto dei morti non tornò in vita prima che i mille anni fossero compiuti).6Beati quelli che partecipano alla prima resurrezione! Su di loro la seconda morte non ha potere, ma saranno sacerdoti di Dio e di Cristo, con cui regneranno mille anni.7Quando saranno passati i mille anni, Satana sarà liberato e uscirà dalla sua prigione.8Egli ingannerà i popoli di tutto il mondo e li riunirà, con Gog e Magog, per la battaglia: sarà un esercito potente, e i combattenti saranno tanti quanti sono i granelli di sabbia sulla riva del mare.9Si spanderanno sulla superficie della terra e assedieranno il popolo di Dio e Gerusalemme, la città che egli ama. Ma dal cielo scenderà il fuoco di Dio, che sʼabbatterà sugli eserciti e li consumerà.10Allora il diavolo, che ancora una volta li ha ingannati, sarà gettato nello stagno di fuoco e di zolfo, dove già si troveranno il mostro e il falso profeta. Là saranno tormentati giorno e notte nei secoli eterni.11Poi vidi un grande trono bianco e colui che vi stava seduto; dalla sua presenza fuggirono il cielo e la terra, ma non trovarono posto per nascondersi.12Vidi i morti, grandi e piccoli, in piedi davanti al trono di Dio. Allora furono aperti dei libri, incluso il libro della vita. E i morti furono giudicati, secondo ciò che stava scritto in quei libri, secondo le cose che avevano fatto.13E il mare rese i corpi di quelli che erano sepolti fra le sue onde, ed anche la terra e lʼaldilà resero i morti che custodivano. Ognuno fu giudicato secondo le sue azioni.14Poi la morte e lʼinferno furono gettati nello stagno di fuoco: lo stagno di fuoco è la seconda morte.15E chi non fu trovato iscritto nel libro della vita venne gettato nello stagno di fuoco.
1Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit[1] and a great chain. (Ap 1,18; Ap 9,1)2And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, (2P 2,4; Giuda 1,6; Ap 12,9)3and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while. (Da 6,17; Mat 27,66; Ap 20,1; Ap 20,8; Ap 20,10)4Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. (Sal 45,16; Da 7,9; Da 7,18; Da 7,22; Mat 19,28; Mat 20,21; Mat 20,27; Giov 14,19; 2Ti 2,11; 2Ti 2,12; Ap 3,21; Ap 5,10; Ap 6,9; Ap 13,12; Ap 13,14; Ap 20,6; Ap 22,5)5The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection.6Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years. (Ap 1,6; Ap 2,11; Ap 14,13; Ap 20,4; Ap 20,14; Ap 21,8)
The Defeat of Satan
7And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison (Ap 20,2)8and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle; their number is like the sand of the sea. (Ez 38,2; Ez 39,1; Ap 16,14; Ap 20,3; Ap 20,10)9And they marched up over the broad plain of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city, but fire came down from heaven[2] and consumed them, (Sal 132,13; Is 8,8; Ez 38,9; Ez 38,16; Abac 1,6; Eb 13,11; Eb 13,13; Ap 13,13)10and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. (Ap 16,13; Ap 19,20; Ap 20,3; Ap 20,8)
Judgment Before the Great White Throne
11Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. (Sal 102,26; Da 2,35; Ap 12,8)12And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. (Da 7,10; Mat 16,27; Ro 14,10; 2Co 5,10; Ap 3,5; Ap 11,18)13And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. (Ap 6,8; Ap 20,12)14Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. (Lu 20,36; 1Co 15,26; Ap 20,6; Ap 20,13; Ap 21,4)15And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. (Mat 13,42; Mat 13,50)
