1اگر خداوند خانه را بنا نكند، بناكنندگانش زحمت بيهوده میكشند؛ اگر خداوند شهر را نگهبانی نكند، نگهبانان بيهوده نگهبانی میكنند.2بيهوده است كه شما برای امرار معاش، اين همه زحمت میكشيد، صبح زود بر میخيزيد و شب دير میخوابيد؛ زيرا هنگامی كه عزيزان خداوند در خوابند، او برای ايشان تدارک میبيند.3فرزندان هدايايی هستند از جانب خداوند. آنها پاداشی هستند كه خداوند به انسان میدهد.4پسرانی كه برای مرد جوان متولد میشوند، همچون تيرهای تيزی هستند در دست او.5خوشا به حال كسی كه تركش خود را از چنين تيرهايی پر میكند! او در جدل با دشمنان هرگز مغلوب نخواهد شد.

Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.2In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat – for he grants sleep to[1] those he loves.3Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.4Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth.5Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.
