1Então Jesus disse ao povo e aos seus discípulos:2“Os especialistas na Lei e os fariseus assumem autoridade sobre a Lei, como se fossem o próprio Moisés.3Pode estar certo fazer o que eles dizem, mas não devem fazer o que eles fazem! Porque eles próprios não fazem o que vos ensinam.4Sobrecarregam e põem sobre os ombros das pessoas fardos pesados e insuportáveis que eles próprios nem sequer com um só dos seus dedos estão dispostos a transportar.5Tudo o que fazem é para dar nas vistas. Fingem-se santos, trazendo nos braços grandes caixas de orações com versículos das Escrituras e alongam as franjas dos seus mantos.6Mas gostam dos lugares de honra nos banquetes, dos assentos presidenciais nas sinagogas,7das saudações que lhes dirigem nas praças e que os tratem por ‘mestres’.8Não deixem que alguém vos trate assim. Só Deus é o vosso Mestre e todos vocês são iguais, como irmãos.9E não tratem ninguém aqui na Terra por Pai, pois há um só Pai, que é Deus que está no céu.10E não se chamem mestres a vós mesmos, pois um só é o vosso mestre, a saber, o Cristo.11O maior de todos vocês será servo.12Mas todo aquele que procura elevar-se será humilhado e todo aquele que se humilhar a si mesmo será elevado.
Ai de vocês!
13-14Ai de vocês, especialistas na Lei e fariseus, fingidos! Fecham o reino dos céus na cara das pessoas! Realmente, nem entram nem deixam entrar quem quer entrar. Roubam às viúvas as suas casas e depois põem-se a dar ares de longas orações!15Sim, ai de vocês, especialistas na Lei e fariseus, fingidos, porque fazem tudo para converter alguém e depois tornam essa pessoa duas vezes mais filha do inferno do que vocês mesmos!16Guias cegos! Ai de vocês! Porque afirmam que jurar pelo templo de Deus não tem validade, enquanto um juramento feito pelo ouro de templo é de cumprimento obrigatório!17Cegos e loucos! Que é maior? O ouro, ou o templo que torna esse ouro santo?18E dizem que um juramento pelo altar não tem grande validade, enquanto que um juramento pelas ofertas que estão sobre o altar é de cumprimento obrigatório!19Cegos! Pois que é maior? A oferta que está sobre o altar ou o próprio altar que a torna santa?20Quando se jura pelo altar, jura-se por ele e por tudo o que sobre ele está.21E quando se jura pelo templo, jura-se por ele e por aquele que nele habita.22E quando se jura pelos céus, jura-se pelo trono de Deus e por aquele que nele se senta.23Sim, ai de vocês, especialistas na Lei e fariseus, fingidos! Pois dão o dízimo da última folha de hortelã do vosso quintal, mas esquecem as coisas importantes, como a justiça, a misericórdia e a fé. Sim, devem dar o dízimo, mas não devem esquecer as coisas mais importantes.24Guias cegos! Coam um mosquito, mas seriam capazes de engolir um camelo!25Ai de vocês, especialistas na Lei e fariseus, fingidos! Lavam o copo e o prato por fora, enquanto por dentro estão cheios de roubo e falta de domínio próprio!26Fariseus cegos! Limpem primeiro o interior do copo e então todo ele ficará limpo.27Ai de vocês, especialistas na Lei e fariseus, hipócritas! São como jazigos; belos por fora, mas cheios de ossadas de mortos e de toda a corrupção.28Procuram parecer justos aos olhos das pessoas, mas por baixo dos vossos mantos de piedade escondem-se corações manchados por toda a espécie de hipocrisia e transgressão.29Ai de vocês, especialistas na Lei e fariseus, fingidos! Pois levantam monumentos aos profetas que os vossos pais mataram, põem flores nos túmulos dos justos que eles destruíram,30e dizem: ‘Se tivéssemos vivido no tempo dos nossos antepassados não seríamos seus cúmplices na morte dos profetas.’31Falando assim, testemunham que são realmente filhos dos assassinos dos profetas.32Mas pior ainda, seguem as suas pisadas, enchendo a medida completa da maldade deles!33Serpentes, filhos de víboras! Como escaparão à condenação do inferno?34Mandar-vos-ei profetas, sábios e especialistas na Lei, mas vocês matarão alguns deles pela crucificação e, nas vossas sinagogas, abrirão as costas de outros com chicotes, perseguindo-os sem descanso, de cidade em cidade.35Pelo que vocês serão culpados de todo o sangue dos homens crentes que foram assassinados, desde o justo Abel até Zacarias, filho de Baraquias, que mataram no templo, entre o altar e o santuário.36É realmente como vos digo: todas estas condenações recairão sobre esta geração.
Jesus tem pena de Jerusalém
37Jerusalém, Jerusalém, cidade que mata os profetas de Deus e apedreja todos aqueles que ele lhe envia! Quantas vezes quis juntar os teus filhos como uma galinha junta os pintainhos debaixo das asas, mas vocês não me deixaram.38Agora, a vossa casa fica ao abandono.39Lembrem-se do que vos digo: nunca mais me tornarão a ver senão quando disserem, ‘bendito aquele que vem em nome do Senhor!’ ”

For they preach, but do not practice. (Mt 5:20; Mt 15:3; Rm 2:17)4They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,[1] and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. (Mt 11:28; Lc 11:46; At 15:10)5They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, (Ex 13:9; Dt 6:8; Dt 11:18; Mt 6:1; Mt 6:16; Mt 9:20; Mt 23:1; Jo 5:44)6and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues (Lc 11:43; Lc 14:7)7and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi[2] by others. (Mt 11:16; Mt 20:3; Mt 23:6; Jo 1:38)8But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers.[3] (Lc 22:32; Jo 21:23; Fm 1:16; Tg 3:1)9And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven. (Ml 1:6; Mt 6:9; Mt 7:11; 1 Co 1:12; 1 Co 3:4)10Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Christ. (Mt 1:17)11The greatest among you shall be your servant. (Mt 20:26)12Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. (Pv 29:23; Ez 21:26; Mt 18:4; Lc 14:11; Lc 18:14; Tg 4:6; Tg 4:10; 1 Pe 5:5)13“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell[5] as yourselves. (Mt 5:29; Jo 17:12; At 2:10; At 6:5; At 13:43; 2 Ts 2:3)16“Woe to you, blind guides, who say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.’ (Mt 5:33; Mt 15:14; Mt 23:17; Mt 23:19; Mt 23:26; Jo 9:39; Rm 2:19; 2 Pe 1:9; Ap 3:17)17You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred? (Ex 30:29)18And you say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it is nothing, but if anyone swears by the gift that is on the altar, he is bound by his oath.’ (Mt 5:23)19You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? (Ex 29:37)20So whoever swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.21And whoever swears by the temple swears by it and by him who dwells in it. (1 Rs 8:13; 2 Cr 6:2; Sl 26:8; Sl 132:14)22And whoever swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who sits upon it. (Mt 5:34; Mt 21:25; Ap 4:2)23“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. (Dt 14:22; 1 Sm 15:22; Sl 33:5; Is 28:25; Is 28:27; Jr 5:1; Mq 6:8; Zc 7:9; Lc 11:42; Lc 18:12)24You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel! (Mt 19:24)25“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. (Mt 15:11; Mc 7:4; Lc 11:39; Lc 16:14; Lc 20:47)26You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean. (Mt 23:25)27“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. (Nm 19:16; 2 Rs 23:16; Lc 11:44; At 23:3; Ef 5:3)28So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. (Mt 23:5; Lc 12:1)29“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, (Lc 11:47)30saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’31Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. (At 7:51)32Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. (Gn 15:16; Dn 8:23; 1 Ts 2:15)33You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? (Mt 3:7; Mt 12:34; Mt 23:15)34Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, (Mt 10:16; Mt 10:17; Mt 10:23; Mt 13:52; Mt 21:35; Mc 13:9; Lc 11:49; Lc 12:11; Lc 21:12; At 13:1; At 22:19; At 26:11; 1 Co 12:28)35so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah,[6] whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. (Gn 4:4; Gn 4:8; Ex 40:6; 2 Rs 16:14; Ez 40:47; Zc 1:1; Lc 1:9; Hb 11:4; 1 Jo 3:12; Ap 18:24)36Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation. (Mt 10:23; Mt 16:28; Mt 24:34)
Lament over Jerusalem
37“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! (Dt 32:11; Rt 2:12; Sl 147:2; Pv 1:24; Mt 21:35; Lc 13:34; Lc 19:41; Lc 23:28; Jo 5:40)38See, your house is left to you desolate. (Is 64:11; Jr 12:7; Jr 22:5)39For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’” (Sl 118:26; Mt 21:9)
