1 Jerubaal, isto é, Gedeão, e o seu exército partiram muito cedo, pela manhã, e chegaram até à fonte de Harode. Os exércitos de Midiã estavam acampados a norte, no vale por detrás da colina de Moré. 2 O SENHOR disse então a Gedeão: “Há gente demais contigo. Não posso deixar todos esses homens lutar contra os midianitas, porque se assim fosse o povo de Israel haveria de gabar-se de ter vencido devido à sua própria força! 3 Manda para casa todos os que estiverem receosos e acobardados, para fora da região montanhosa de Gileade.” E foi assim que nada menos do que 22 000 homens se foram embora e só 10 000 ficaram decididos a combater. 4 O SENHOR tornou a dizer a Gedeão: “Ainda há gente a mais! Leva-os até à fonte e ali te mostrarei quem irá contigo e quem ficará de parte.” 5 Gedeão juntou-os à beira da água e ali o SENHOR lhe disse: “Divide-os em dois grupos, de acordo com o modo como bebem. Porás de um lado aqueles que beberem a água, lambendo-a como os cães; do outro ficarão aqueles que se ajoelharem e levarem a água à boca.” 6 Apenas 300 homens beberam com as mãos; todos os outros se inclinaram com a boca até à corrente. 7 “Conquistarei os midianitas com estes 300 homens!”, disse o SENHOR a Gedeão. “Manda o resto para casa!” 8 Gedeão mandou recolher todos os jarros de barro e as trombetas que havia entre eles e enviou-os para casa, ficando apenas com os tais 300 homens. O acampamento midianita ficava no vale, mesmo abaixo. 9 Nessa noite, o SENHOR disse a Gedeão: “Levanta-te! Manda formar os teus homens e ataca os midianitas, pois farei com que os derrotes. 10 No entanto, se houver em ti ainda algum receio, desce primeiro ao acampamento inimigo; leva contigo o teu ajudante Purá; 11 e escuta o que estão a dizer lá em baixo. Vais ver que isso te dará muito alento e desejo de atacar!” Então ele e Purá desceram na escuridão até ao limite do acampamento, junto das sentinelas mais avançadas do inimigo. 12 Encontravam-se ali os vastos exércitos de Midiã, de Amaleque e das outras nações orientais, concentrados por todo o vale, numa multidão compacta que lembrava uma praga de gafanhotos; parecia a areia da praia e eram incontáveis os seus camelos! 13 Gedeão aproximou-se; um homem tinha tido um sonho e contava-o ao camarada: “Sonhei com uma coisa muito estranha”, estava ele a dizer. “Um grande pão de cevada vinha rolando lá de cima, sobre o nosso acampamento, caía em cima das tendas e deitava-as abaixo!” 14 O outro soldado respondeu-lhe: “Podes ter a certeza de que esse teu sonho só pode ter um significado. É Gedeão, filho de Joás, o israelita, que vai chegar para massacrar todas as forças aliadas de Midiã!” 15 Quando Gedeão ouviu aquilo, tanto o sonho como a interpretação, louvou o SENHOR. Regressou para junto dos seus homens e gritou-lhes: “Todos de pé! O SENHOR vai usar-vos para derrotar estes grandes exércitos de Midiã!” 16 Dividiu os 300 soldados em três grupos, deu a cada um dos homens uma trombeta e um jarro de barro com uma tocha acesa lá dentro. 17 Depois explicou-lhes o seu plano: “Quando chegarmos às primeiras sentinelas do campo inimigo, façam todos como eu. 18 Assim que me ouvirem, a mim e aos que estão comigo, soprar as trombetas, devem fazer o mesmo em volta de todo o acampamento e gritar: ‘Combatemos por o SENHOR e por Gedeão!’ ” 19 Passava pouco da meia-noite e da altura do render das sentinelas, quando Gedeão e os cem que ficaram com ele chegaram ao limite do campo dos midianitas. Subitamente sopraram as trombetas e logo a seguir partiram os jarros que tinham na mão. 20 Os outros duzentos fizeram imediatamente o mesmo, soprando as trombetas com a mão direita, levantando as tochas acesas com a outra e gritando: “Uma espada pelo SENHOR e por Gedeão!” 21 E ficaram a ver o que acontecia. Todo aquele imenso exército inimigo começou a andar às voltas, gritando de pânico e a fugir. 22 Enquanto os 300 homens tocavam as trombetas, o SENHOR fez com que as tropas inimigas começassem a lutar entre si, matando-se uns aos outros, e isto duma ponta à outra do acampamento; muitos conseguiram fugir, correndo até Bete-Sita perto de Zerará e até à entrada de Abel-Meolá acima de Tabate. 23 Gedeão mandou mensageiros às tropas de Naftali, Aser e Manassés para que perseguissem e destruíssem toda aquela gente do exército de Midiã que fugia. 24 Mandou igualmente mensageiros pelas colinas de Efraim, convocando tropas para que ocupassem os baixios do Jordão, em Bete-Bará, para evitar que os midianitas passassem a pé para o outro lado e escapassem. 25 Orebe e Zeebe, dois generais midianitas, foram capturados. Orebe foi morto junto ao rochedo de Orebe, e Zeebe foi morto no lagar de Zeebe. Os israelitas pegaram nas cabeças dum e doutro, atravessaram o Jordão e trouxeram-nas a Gedeão.

1 Then Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the spring of Harod. And the camp of Midian was north of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. (Gn 12:6; Dt 11:30; Jz 6:32; 1 Sm 29:1) 2 The Lord said to Gideon, “The people with you are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hand, lest Israel boast over me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ (Dt 8:17; Is 10:13) 3 Now therefore proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling, let him return home and hurry away from Mount Gilead.’” Then 22,000 of the people returned, and 10,000 remained. (Dt 20:8) 4 And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many. Take them down to the water, and I will test them for you there, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ shall go with you, and anyone of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ shall not go.” 5 So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Every one who laps the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set by himself. Likewise, every one who kneels down to drink.” 6 And the number of those who lapped, putting their hands to their mouths, was 300 men, but all the rest of the people knelt down to drink water. 7 And the Lord said to Gideon, “With the 300 men who lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hand, and let all the others go every man to his home.” (1 Sm 14:6; 2 Cr 14:11) 8 So the people took provisions in their hands, and their trumpets. And he sent all the rest of Israel every man to his tent, but retained the 300 men. And the camp of Midian was below him in the valley. (Jz 7:1) 9 That same night the Lord said to him, “Arise, go down against the camp, for I have given it into your hand. (Gn 46:2; Jz 3:28; 1 Rs 3:5) 10 But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant. 11 And you shall hear what they say, and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp.” Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outposts of the armed men who were in the camp. (Jz 7:13; 1 Sm 14:9) 12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the people of the East lay along the valley like locusts in abundance, and their camels were without number, as the sand that is on the seashore in abundance. (Js 11:4; Jz 6:3) 13 When Gideon came, behold, a man was telling a dream to his comrade. And he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream, and behold, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian and came to the tent and struck it so that it fell and turned it upside down, so that the tent lay flat.” 14 And his comrade answered, “This is no other than the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel; God has given into his hand Midian and all the camp.” 15 As soon as Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped. And he returned to the camp of Israel and said, “Arise, for the Lord has given the host of Midian into your hand.” 16 And he divided the 300 men into three companies and put trumpets into the hands of all of them and empty jars, with torches inside the jars. (Gn 15:17; Jz 15:4) 17 And he said to them, “Look at me, and do likewise. When I come to the outskirts of the camp, do as I do. 18 When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then blow the trumpets also on every side of all the camp and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’” (Ex 14:13; 2 Cr 20:17) 19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outskirts of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, when they had just set the watch. And they blew the trumpets and smashed the jars that were in their hands. 20 Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the jars. They held in their left hands the torches, and in their right hands the trumpets to blow. And they cried out, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” (Jz 7:18) 21 Every man stood in his place around the camp, and all the army ran. They cried out and fled. (2 Rs 7:7) 22 When they blew the 300 trumpets, the Lord set every man’s sword against his comrade and against all the army. And the army fled as far as Beth-shittah toward Zererah,[1] as far as the border of Abel-meholah, by Tabbath. (Js 6:4; Js 6:16; Js 6:20; 1 Sm 14:20; 2 Cr 20:23; Sl 83:9; Is 9:4) 23 And the men of Israel were called out from Naphtali and from Asher and from all Manasseh, and they pursued after Midian. 24 Gideon sent messengers throughout all the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and capture the waters against them, as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the waters as far as Beth-barah, and also the Jordan. (Js 24:33; Jz 3:28; Jz 6:35) 25 And they captured the two princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. Then they pursued Midian, and they brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon across the Jordan. (Jz 8:3; Jz 8:4; Sl 83:11; Is 10:26)
