O falso profeta Hananias

1 Um dia, no final do verão desse mesmo ano, o quarto do reinado de Zedequias, rei de Judá, Hananias, filho de Azur, um falso profeta de Gibeão, dirigiu-se a mim publicamente, na frente dos sacerdotes e do povo, e disse: 2 “O SENHOR dos exércitos, o Deus de Israel, declara: ‘Já tirei o jugo do rei da Babilónia dos vossos pescoços! 3 Dentro de dois anos trarei de novo para o templo os tesouros que Nabucodonozor transportou para a Babilónia! 4 E farei voltar o rei Jeconias, filho de Joaquim, rei de Judá, assim como todos os outros cativos exilados na Babilónia, diz o SENHOR. É com toda a certeza que levantarei esse jugo posto sobre os vossos pescoços pelo rei da Babilónia.’ ” 5 Então Jeremias disse a Hananias, ali mesmo, diante dos sacerdotes e de todas as pessoas que estavam no templo do SENHOR: 6 “Amém! Assim, as tuas profecias possam tornar-se realidade! O meu desejo seria, na verdade, que o SENHOR trouxesse da Babilónia os tesouros deste templo, assim como todos os que amamos! 7 Mas agora ouve bem as solenes palavras que tenho a dizer-te também na presença de todas estas pessoas. 8 Os antigos profetas que nos precederam, a ti e a mim, falaram contra muitas nações, avisando sempre que haveria guerra, fome e pestes. 9 Por isso, um profeta que prediz a paz tem a grande responsabilidade sobre si, que é provar que o SENHOR realmente o enviou. Só quando essa mensagem acontecer se saberá que realmente ela vem de Deus.” 10 Então Hananias, o falso profeta, pegou no jugo do pescoço de Jeremias e quebrou-o. 11 Ao mesmo tempo que fazia isto, dirigiu-se outra vez à multidão que assistia: “O SENHOR prometeu que dentro de dois anos libertará todos os povos agora escravizados por Nabucodonozor, rei da Babilónia!” Jeremias retirou-se. 12 No entanto, pouco tempo depois, o SENHOR comunicou a Jeremias esta mensagem: 13 “Vai dizer a Hananias: Assim diz o SENHOR, o que tu quebraste no outro dia foi apenas um jugo de madeira, mas em seu lugar esta gente terá sobre si um jugo de ferro! 14 O SENHOR dos exércitos, o Deus de Israel, diz: Porei um jugo de ferro sobre o pescoço de todas estas nações, o que as obrigará à escravidão de Nabucodonozor, rei da Babilónia. E nada alterará este decreto, até porque lhe dei igualmente todos os vossos rebanhos e o vosso gado.” 15 Então Jeremias disse a Hananias, o falso profeta: “Ouve, Hananias, tu não foste enviado pelo SENHOR e, contudo, o povo está a acreditar nas tuas mentiras. 16 Por isso, o SENHOR diz que deves morrer. Ainda neste mesmo ano, a tua vida se apagará, pois te rebelaste contra o SENHOR.” 17 Efetivamente, dois meses mais tarde, no sétimo mês do mesmo ano, Hananias morreu.

Hananiah the False Prophet

1 In that same year, at the beginning of the reign of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fifth month of the fourth year, Hananiah the son of Azzur, the prophet from Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the Lord, in the presence of the priests and all the people, saying, (Js 9:3; Js 21:17; Jr 27:12; Ez 11:1)

2 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. (Jr 27:2; Jr 27:11) 3 Within two years I will bring back to this place all the vessels of the Lord’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried to Babylon. (Jr 27:16; Jr 28:11) 4 I will also bring back to this place Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the exiles from Judah who went to Babylon, declares the Lord, for I will break the yoke of the king of Babylon.” (Jr 22:10; Jr 22:12; Jr 22:26; Jr 28:2)

5 Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to Hananiah the prophet in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord, 6 and the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord make the words that you have prophesied come true, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord, and all the exiles. (1 Rs 1:36) 7 Yet hear now this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. 8 The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. (Jr 26:18) 9 As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes to pass, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.” (Dt 18:22; Jr 6:14) 10 Then the prophet Hananiah took the yoke-bars from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke them. (Jr 27:2) 11 And Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, “Thus says the Lord: Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all the nations within two years.” But Jeremiah the prophet went his way. (1 Rs 22:11; Jr 27:7; Jr 28:2) 12 Sometime after the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke-bars from off the neck of Jeremiah the prophet, the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah: (Jr 28:1; Jr 28:10) 13 “Go, tell Hananiah, ‘Thus says the Lord: You have broken wooden bars, but you have made in their place bars of iron. 14 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: I have put upon the neck of all these nations an iron yoke to serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they shall serve him, for I have given to him even the beasts of the field.’” (Dt 28:48; Jr 25:11; Jr 27:6) 15 And Jeremiah the prophet said to the prophet Hananiah, “Listen, Hananiah, the Lord has not sent you, and you have made this people trust in a lie. 16 Therefore thus says the Lord: ‘Behold, I will remove you from the face of the earth. This year you shall die, because you have uttered rebellion against the Lord.’” (Dt 13:5; Jr 29:32) 17 In that same year, in the seventh month, the prophet Hananiah died.
