1Depois de tudo isto vi um outro anjo descer do céu. E tinha uma grande autoridade, de tal maneira que toda a Terra ficou iluminada com o seu esplendor.2E gritou com uma voz muito forte: “Caiu, caiu a grande Babilónia! Ela tornou-se num refúgio de demónios e espíritos impuros, um ninho de toda a ave imunda e repugnante.3Porque todas as nações beberam o vinho mortal do frenesi da sua imoralidade sexual. Os governantes da Terra tiveram com ela relações ilícitas; o comércio de todo o mundo tornou-se florescente só à custa do luxo faustoso que nela havia.”4Então ouvi outra voz do céu que dizia: “Sai dela, meu povo, para não tomares parte nos seus pecados e para não vires a ser castigado juntamente com ela com as mesmas pragas.5Porque os seus pecados se têm acumulado até ao céu. Deus está pronto a julgá-la pelos seus crimes.6Tratem-na como ela vos tratou, e que o seu castigo seja duplicado em relação àquilo que merecem os seus pecados. Na taça em que vos fez beber maldade e desgraça, que ela seja obrigada agora a beber do mesmo duas vezes mais.7Viveu na glória e no soberba; que agora saiba, na mesma medida, o que é o sofrimento e a tristeza. Gaba-se dizendo: ‘Sou rainha no meu trono! Não sou como qualquer viúva desamparada e nem sequer saberei o que é o luto!’8Pois por isso mesmo é que num só dia tudo lhe cairá em cima: a tristeza da morte, o choro, a fome; será destruída pelo fogo e reduzida a cinzas. Porque é poderoso o Senhor Deus que a julga.”9E os governantes deste mundo que se juntaram a ela nas suas imoralidades sexuais hão de lamentá-la, quando virem que dela só fica o fumo que sobe das suas cinzas.10Hão de colocar-se de longe, com medo daquele grande tormento, e lamentar: “Ai da Babilónia, aquela poderosa cidade! Um momento só bastou para que fosse executada a sua condenação!”11Os comerciantes da Terra choram e lamentam-se por causa dela, pois desapareceu aquele grande mercado.12Ela lhes comprava grandes quantidades de ouro, prata, joias com pedras preciosas e pérolas, rico vestuário de linho fino e sedas de púrpura e escarlate; belas peças de imensas variedades de madeira perfumada e de marfim; e tudo o que poderia fabricar-se, como utensílios ou objetos de ornamentação, nas madeiras mais preciosas e em bronze, ferro e mármore;13e ainda requintadas especiarias e temperos, produtos de beleza, perfumes, óleos e cremes; assim como vinhos, azeite, finas farinhas e também gado variado, ovelhas e cavalos em abundância; carruagens e corpos e almas de homens!14“Todas as coisas finas e extravagantes de que tanto gostavas desapareceram!”, choravam eles. “O luxo e a vida faustosa nunca mais serão teus. Foram-se para sempre!”15Os comerciantes que tinham enriquecido com a venda de tudo aquilo ficarão à distância com medo daquele grande tormento, e chorando lamentarão:16“Que desgraça! Aquela grande cidade, tão bela como uma mulher vestida da púrpura mais fina e de fino linho escarlate, e com belas joias de ouro, pedras preciosas e pérolas!17Num momento, todas essas riquezas se foram!” E todos os que navegam e trabalham no mar, comandantes e tripulações, hão de colocar-se de longe,18chorando enquanto contemplam o fumo a subir do incêndio, dizendo: “Que cidade haveria, no mundo inteiro, semelhante a esta?”19E na sua tristeza e desespero lançarão pó sobre as suas cabeças e lamentarão: “Ai daquela enorme cidade! A sua prosperidade tinha-nos enriquecido a todos nós que dependíamos do comércio dos mares e agora, num só momento, desapareceu!”20Mas tu, ó céu, e vocês, todos os santos, seus apóstolos e profetas, alegrem-se porque, ao condená-la, Deus fez-nos justiça e vingou-vos.21E um anjo, de aspeto muito vigoroso, pegou numa pedra do tamanho de uma grande mó, lançou-a ao mar e disse: “É assim que é lançada fora a Babilónia, essa grande cidade, de tal forma que nem sequer deixará vestígios!22Nunca mais ali se ouvirá o som de música, nem harpas, cânticos, flautas ou trombetas. Também se deixarão ali de ver, para sempre, operários seja de que atividade for. Nunca mais se moerá farinha;23nunca mais se acenderá uma luz; nunca mais ali se verá a alegria de um casamento e a felicidade de um casal de noivos! Os teus comerciantes tinham-se tornado grandes senhores da terra. E todas as nações se deixaram enfeitiçar pelos teus atrativos.24Foi também ali que correu o sangue dos profetas, dos santos e de todos os que foram assassinados na Terra!”
1After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was made bright with his glory. (Ez 43:2; Ap 17:1; Ap 17:7)2And he called out with a mighty voice, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She has become a dwelling place for demons, a haunt for every unclean spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast. (Is 13:21; Is 14:23; Is 34:11; Is 34:14; Jr 50:39; Jr 51:37; Sf 2:14; Ap 14:8; Ap 16:13)3For all nations have drunk[1] the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality, and the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living.” (Ez 27:33; Ap 14:8; Ap 17:2; Ap 18:9; Ap 18:11; Ap 18:15)4Then I heard another voice from heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues; (Is 48:20; 2 Co 6:17)5for her sins are heaped high as heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities. (Gn 18:20; Ed 9:6; Jr 51:9; Jn 1:2; Ap 16:19)6Pay her back as she herself has paid back others, and repay her double for her deeds; mix a double portion for her in the cup she mixed. (Sl 137:8; Jr 16:18; Jr 50:15; Jr 50:29; Jr 51:24; Jr 51:49; Ap 14:10; Ap 16:19; Ap 17:4)7As she glorified herself and lived in luxury, so give her a like measure of torment and mourning, since in her heart she says, ‘I sit as a queen, I am no widow, and mourning I shall never see.’ (Is 47:7; Ez 28:2; Sf 2:15; Ap 3:17)8For this reason her plagues will come in a single day, death and mourning and famine, and she will be burned up with fire; for mighty is the Lord God who has judged her.” (Is 47:9; Jr 50:34; Ap 17:16; Ap 18:10)9And the kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her, will weep and wail over her when they see the smoke of her burning. (Jr 50:46; Ez 26:16; Ap 17:2; Ap 18:3; Ap 18:18; Ap 19:3)10They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say, “Alas! Alas! You great city, you mighty city, Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come.” (Ap 14:8; Ap 18:8; Ap 18:15; Ap 18:17; Ap 18:19)11And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore, (Ez 27:36; Ap 18:3; Ap 18:15)12cargo of gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, all kinds of scented wood, all kinds of articles of ivory, all kinds of articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble,13cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls.[2]14“The fruit for which your soul longed has gone from you, and all your delicacies and your splendors are lost to you, never to be found again!”15The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud, (Ap 18:3; Ap 18:10; Ap 18:11)16“Alas, alas, for the great city that was clothed in fine linen, in purple and scarlet, adorned with gold, with jewels, and with pearls! (Ap 17:4)17For in a single hour all this wealth has been laid waste.” And all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off (Ez 27:28; Ap 17:16; Ap 18:10; Ap 18:19)18and cried out as they saw the smoke of her burning, “What city was like the great city?” (Ez 27:30; Ez 27:32; Ap 13:4; Ap 18:9)19And they threw dust on their heads as they wept and mourned, crying out, “Alas, alas, for the great city where all who had ships at sea grew rich by her wealth! For in a single hour she has been laid waste. (Js 7:6; Jó 2:12; Ap 18:3; Ap 18:10; Ap 18:15; Ap 18:17)20Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you saints and apostles and prophets, for God has given judgment for you against her!” (Dt 32:43; Jr 51:48; Lc 11:49; Ap 12:12; Ap 19:2)21Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “So will Babylon the great city be thrown down with violence, and will be found no more; (Jr 51:63; Ap 5:2; Ap 10:1; Ap 18:10)22and the sound of harpists and musicians, of flute players and trumpeters, will be heard in you no more, and a craftsman of any craft will be found in you no more, and the sound of the mill will be heard in you no more, (Ec 12:4; Is 14:11; Is 24:8; Jr 25:10; Ez 26:13)23and the light of a lamp will shine in you no more, and the voice of bridegroom and bride will be heard in you no more, for your merchants were the great ones of the earth, and all nations were deceived by your sorcery. (Is 23:8; Jr 7:34; Jr 16:9; Jr 33:11; Na 3:4)24And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all who have been slain on earth.” (Jr 51:49; Mt 23:35; Ap 17:6)
